“Mud” 5”x7”, acrylic on canvas, 2026.

Mud is small but complicated piece. Over the past few years I have personally felt that I have been “spinning my wheels in the mud” so to speak. Mud is an acknowledgment of those feelings. While writing down this piece within my sketchbook I wondered how I would portray this. Do I use different browns to represent the different types of soil on the planet along with the different sectors of feelings? Do I make it drip? Does it crackle like dried earth? When putting in other colors into a jar filled to brim with previous acrylics, my mud, I realized what I wanted to use. This is perfect!! My mud! I thought what better way to connect all these feelings and thoughts that I have been having that I have been metaphorically stuck in while also commenting on painting terminology! Mud is using my “mud” a conglomerate of different colors from multiple previous palettes that have been put all together to create the color seen here.

Lacrimosa, meaning “weeping” in Latin, reflects the grief I’ve faced over the past few years: family medical diagnoses, the loss of loved ones—through actions or death—the passing of my soulmate cat, and recently, an uncle gone too soon. This piece captures those emotions. Initially intended as “An Ode to Reinhardt No. 2,” inspired by Reinhardt’s black paintings, it evolved. While painting, I focused not on his blacks but on my life’s challenges. Each shade of black represents a memory I’m grappling with—struggling to release or understand. Unlike my usual work, Lacrimosa was created solely for myself, not for social media. It’s a refuge of abstracted, tile-like memories, each color a fragment of my emotional journey.
