Fromsoft games have the most — how do I put this — felt examples of game design idiosyncrasies
In Dark Souls 2, you can put a weapon buff on infused weapons but only if it’s a spell. This is forever the best way to do damage with weapons. And because enemies in the dlcs have damage resistance to ranged attacks, it’s forever the best way to deal damage period.
In Elden Ring, some enemies can dodge ranged attacks. Some spells have a parameter that says “enemies don’t dodge this”. Some spells don’t, but for a reason or another, enemies don’t dodge them either. These spells are almost always among the best.
These are pretty arbitrary design choices, but their impact on the game is massive. You can feel them when playing.
Fromsoft fans on who is the hardest boss:
Fromsoft fan 1: the hardest boss is consort radahn.
Fromsoft fan 2: I agree
Fromsoft fan on who is the 2nd hardest boss:
Fromsoft fan 1: it’s Malenia
Fromsoft fan 2:I agree
Fromsoft fans on who is the 3rd hardest boss:
Fromsoft fan 1: you shall rue this day!
Fromsoft fan 2: curse you!
I really hope in whatever dark souls style game fromsoft gives us next we get a giant beehive level. Fill it with honey that slows the player down and big fat bee enemies that poison you. Make the area boss a gross mutant queen bee and after you kill her you can make a bee stinger rapier or something out of her soul.

There’s a new book on Fromsoftware out now!
L'histoire de Fromsoftware is what it says on the tin, it’s a history and analysis book that spans from King’s Field all the way to current day. From its mobile game history, to game dev tools, to modern day Souls and all the weird and wonderful games that came before it.
Of course there’s Deracine! Obviously, Armored Core, given respect right at the very start! But most importantly, yep, even the mini visual novel about Enchanted Arms is here! It’s also interspersed with interviews from people who also have a lot to say about Fromsoftware. Like me!
This book has been several years in the making, written by Victor Moisan and published through Third Éditions. I’m happy I was able to contribute a few 2000s era translated interviews and works. It’s on sale now, if you know French, do check it out! Or fingers crossed for English edition!
Because apparently I crave agony, I am trying Sekiro again. I never even made it to the first mini-boss the first time, but god willing I might someday get far enough to meet this lovely fellow:
