Called it.
Firefly Animated.
So it appears that there is a Firefly reboot in the works with much of the original cast returning
Which is already cool enough
But!
It’s gonna be ANIMATED!!!!
I’m so pumped!
I’m always saying more sci fi and fantasy needs to be animated!
Making a show where the premise is “What if the Confederacy really were the good guys? And what if Native Americans are killer mutants (but because of colonizers lol)?” in 2026 is fucking apeshit.
Firefly literally had an entire episode which was just a longform rape joke. Firefly’s entire thesis on women was that one guy you know who overcorrects so much that he is absolutely not an ally.

Firefly animated show announced. It’s time for me to become obsessed with Inara Serra again.
Also, I haven’t thought about or watched firefly in soooo long but I loved it once upon a time and I know way back when I would have LOVED for them to bring it back
Idk why I feel so off about it right now. I’m not even upset about it I just have no feelings about it I guess
I’m not even in the Firefly fandom but the reaction on here vs Bluesky is crazy. Everyone here is ecstatic, but every post in Bluesky is like ‘ugh this show was always bad and this announcement sucks actually’
The way I am frothing at the mouth over the animated Firefly news y'all I missed this show so much Nathan Fillion I owe you my life
Hopeful? I guess?
I’m not thrilled about Adam Baldwin’s involvement, but least if it’s all voice acting and they do have problems with him, they don’t necessarily need to be in the same room as him.
Doesn’t seem like Whedon will be involved, but Nathan Fillion was somewhat flippant about getting his blessing which kind of gives me pause.
I’m curious to see what the art style will be, because that tends to be the make or break of animated shows for me, and there’s always a lot to live up to when animating live action characters.
I also wonder whether they’ll actually be able to get it going. I think the Buffy revival recently got cancelled, and while I’m not sure of the reasoning behind that it could affect the results of their pitches.
I REALLY hope they do Book justice, if they decide to recast him.
Ultimately though an animated series isn’t really what I wanted, but from my point of view it’s kind of the least bad revival option. I’m tentatively curious to see what happens, and whether or not I take it as canon probably depends how gay it is lmao. I’ll probably pirate it though bc Adam Baldwin.
Thanks for the ask!! Sorry if I rained on your parade a little bit there, don’t let my cynicism get in the way of you enjoying this!!
I see the enthusiasm but I am not excited about a Firefly reboot, and watching Nathan Fillion’s announcement makes me a lot less excited.
1. People got hurt. Real actors got hurt by Joss Whedon. And a really good fandom got its heart broken. I can’t even watch Buffy, or Angel, or Firefly, because I can’t unsee the way Sarah Michelle Gellar wastes away on screen, the way Charisma Carpenter’s character gets abused and disappeared, the way “strong women” is a kink more than it’s feminism. Nathan, if you can’t acknowledge that, if you are just ignoring it and hoping I forgot, then you don’t need to ask me for anything.
2, related: the “Browncoats, assemble!” energy you are trying to create pretends that no time has passed and nothing has changed. Yes, 26 years ago, the Browncoats assembled, and got a movie for our trouble, and in return we got a very mid movie that needlessly killed characters we cared about. I hope you enjoyed your movie money and bought a lovely home with it but the Browncoats are all older and sadder now.
3. Adam Baldwin is back. Lovely. Won’t it be nice to see his funny brutality again. I’m sure I won’t be thinking about how GamerGate gave rise to MAGA and now my country is terrifying. Yes that was a delightfully amusing hat.
4. Nice to see you all over this promotional material Alan Tudyk but your character is dead. And I notice he isn’t in that character art either.
Do you know what I’d like? Something new to love. Something made for today, not for the past. Something to help me feel good and feel connected without being all mixed up with regret and anger.
And after seeing my favorite media properties ruined by utterly cynical grabs at fannish money, I think I’m more likely to find that in a book.
Hello, Becky Chambers.
The Return of ‘Firefly’ Could Be an Animated Series
Key word is “could”. The actors want to do it, but no streamer has bought the series yet.
Just stumbled across this and thought all y'all Firefly fans would like to know:
Firefly Animated Series In The Works With Full Cast Reprising Roles
Firefly Animated Series In The Works With Full Cast On Board - TVLine
A Firefly revival is being developed as an animated series.

Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin are expected to reprise their roles.
The animated reboot is being developed through Fillion’s production banner Collision33 in partnership with 20th Television Animation, which controls the underlying rights to the franchise.
Married writing-producing team Marc Guggenheim (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow) and Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Reaper) are attached to serve as showrunners, and a script has been completed. Joss Whedon, who created the original series, is not involved in the animated project. During today’s panel, Fillion confirmed Whedon has given the series his blessing.
The proposed series is set in the timeline between the original 2002 television run and its 2005 feature film continuation, Serenity, expanding the universe while preserving continuity with the established lore. Early concept art has been developed in collaboration with the Oscar and Emmy-award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine, which can be found below. The fully assembled package is expected to be taken out to buyers shortly.
