Playing FFV and got to the part where I get to unlock three legendary weapons – I wanted to make sure I didn’t make some horrible mistake in choosing, so I duckduckwent to find an overview of what the various weapons do.

Stumbled across a discussion where people argued about what one should choose in the first batch, second batch etc.

… And that’s how I learned that I did not, in fact, need to go through all four dungeons for all four tablets in order to unlock the weapons. 😂

(At least it made it easier to make the “choice”)

Honestly my Final Fantasy V experience is just this Dragon Ball meme considering all I’m doing is mastering the jobs I currently have in a basement

I love the job system in FFV so much, and I’m a little sad I apparently missed that kind of system early on in XIV

Playing FFV, and I love it when games have status effects you can either circumvent or exploit in various ways by adjusting your stategies.

Galuf has been zombiefied (aka technically dead, so he won’t take damage, but also fights against me) for ages now, but I just gave him a healing staff (heals everything it “attacks”) and now I don’t have to worry about doing anything else to keep the rest of the team alive while I grind!

Yo this theme is ultra cash & Gilgamesh is really goated, man pretended to act defeated AS HE BUFFS HIMSELFS UP TO THEN SURPRISE ME WITH USING JUMP! And after I made quick work with Samurai, he cuts his loses & leaves! He’s like the unholy but beautiful combination of King K Rool & Dynamo from Mega Man X5

So I finally got to meet Exdeath & HOLY CRAP THIS THEME IS RAW!!!! One Winged Angel is likely very deserved to be one of the most well known FF songs but why is no one talking about this raw music

And I think what I love about this theme is that it reminds me of this song in Golden Sun Dark Dawn maybe a massive influence considering FFV was way before the Golden Sun series ever existed

Been going on a binge of some old OC Remix albums and I haven’t listened to these in so long but they still hit in all the right places.

FFV and The Spector of Death-An Analysis of Final Fantasy V

SPOILER WARNING FOR FFV

I am now in the third act of FFV and I have to say that I am loving the story so far. I think what makes FFV’s story so interesting is how the tone of the game gradually changes to reveal something much darker underneath the hood. FFV’s story has this reputation of being a lot more light hearted and comedic in comparison to other entries in the series. And while it is true that the game starts off with a lighter tone and has plenty of gag scenes, there is also a growing sense of melancholy that weaves in and out of the story from the very beginning, only growing stronger as it progresses. Until Finally you can no longer ignore the specter of death that haunts the narrative.

Throughout Final Fantasy V we constantly see the Warriors of Light fail. They can’t save the four crystals, can not stop ExDeath from returning, each Kingdom the visit ends up in turmoil, Kings and Queens are left in critical condition, both family and friends are lost, and in the End ExDeath ultimately succeeds in his plan of unleashing the Void. The only victories they manage to scrap by are small and in frequent, capable of keeping them going but unable to save the world.

These failures ultimately build up one after another to FFV’s biggest tragedy, the death of Galuf. Galuf dies saving both his granddaughter and the other warriors of light, giving up his life for the next generation. It’s a truly gut-retching scene as you see Bartz, Lenne, and Faris using every possible spell or item they have to try and save him, but no matter how much power they have it does nothing. You can not stop death, you can run from it, fight it, or even try and laugh it off, but in the end it will come for you.

And that is the ultimate point of FFV’s ever growing melancholy. To impress on the player that even in times of peace death, tragedy, and failure can arise to bring about despair. However that does not mean we should just lay down and take it. Despite their many failures and setbacks, Bartz, Lenna, Faris, and Krile continue to endure. They take on every tragedy Exdeath throws at them and continue to move forward, to fight for their broken world regardless of how much they will suffer in turn. Yes FFV wishes to impress on the player that tragedy is unavoidable but it also teaches the play how to pick them selves up and continue to live in spite of despair.
