What does Trump’s campaign reveal about a hidden strategy of power?

In Retribution: Donald Trump and the Campaign That Changed America, the author digs beyond the rally stages and TV cameras to reveal a campaign strategy that wasn’t just bold—it was calculated in ways many people never noticed. One curious detail is how Trump’s team analyzed real-time online reactions to tailor his public tone almost speech by speech, turning social media feedback into a political weapon. Instead of following traditional strategies, the campaign learned to amplify whatever message triggered the strongest emotional response, even if it didn’t follow typical political logic.

This hidden mechanism helped re

The book suggests that the 2016 race didn’t just elect a president—it upgraded the playbook of political influence. Even if you’ve never followed U.S. politics closely, the behind-the-scenes revelations make the story feel like uncovering a secret manual on power in the digital age.

Trump won over “persuadable” voters in 2016 and 2024 not by discerning their issue preferences and moderating his message to suit them but by motivating and equipping his base to carry his tune. When you are a low-info voter, seeing people you’ve known forever wearing the MAGA hat tells you that this is what people like you believe. And so you do. Trump’s campaigns have been driven by unleashing, not admonishing, his base and recruiting trusted messengers rather than trying to persuade people principally with ads.

A brilliant video that I missed the first time around in 2016. Leslie Odom, Jr. sings the Barack Obama part (looking ahead to the 2016 election featuring the frontrunner Hillary Clinton, a bunch of spoiler candidates (like Nader and Jill Stein), and the white backlash candidate Trump). Words and melody written by Broadway superwoman Sara Bareilles.

Powerful video from 8 years ago. Imagine what Obama couldn’t say out loud, put to words.

Seriously - This American Life, Sara Bareilles, and Leslie Odom, Jr. (2016)

If Russia is blamed for Trump’s election, we avoid the unpleasant reality of our failed democratic institutions and decaying empire. We avoid facing the inevitable rise of a Christianized fascism borne out of widespread impoverishment, rage, despair and abandonment. We avoid acknowledging the complicity of the Democratic Party in the orchestration of the largest social inequality in our nation’s history, the evisceration of our basic civil liberties, endless wars and an electoral system bankrolled by the billionaire class, which is legalized bribery. The myth allows us to believe that Democratic politicians, like the establishment Republicans who have joined them, are the guarantors of a democracy they destroyed.

(via Trump Lashes Out Dangerously at Judges and Juries After Key Durham Acquittal)

The Dunham investigation was a big waste of time - at Trump’s insistence - and when Biden was elected in 2020 (and Trump was the big, cry-baby loser wailing about non-existent “massive voter fraud” and planning a violent insurrection) he did and said nothing about Dunham’s investigation.  But to hear Trump talk, there’s this gigantic conspiracy by the courts, and lawyers, and government and the Easter bunny to never, ever allow justice to be served when it comes to him.  You would think by now his “supporters” would be sick of his constant whining and blaming and finger-pointing and fairy tale claims.  Apparently not and Trump’s desperation is leading him to pull the trigger on bringing about even more violence in his name.   A pathetic, weak and dangerous man.  Fuck Trump.

To Fight Online Misinformation, Criminalize Voter Suppression

To Fight Online Misinformation, Criminalize Voter Suppression

This week, Senator Joe Manchin announced that he won’t support HR 1, the sweeping election reform legislation that passed the House and has been languishing in the Senate, effectively torpedoing its passage. But policymakers shouldn’t scrap the bill entirely. For legislators who are serious about expanding platform liability to fight online misinformation, a few provisions hidden deep in HR1…

SOCIAL DISTANCING DAY 287. Whimsically decided to see what the oldest photos on my phone are. This one is a drawing on the refrigerator whiteboard by @tbh.create from October 2016. America Eternal

Though I pretend to not care ,

I’ve thought of every way I’d be willing to die for you:

Would I?

Once in a while, spangled banners sway over my heart.

A torch being held by crowned hands,

as golden garland during Saturn’s rise.

A beautiful future worth my sacrifice.

Moonlight in a purple sky over a shimmering mirror,

The movement of earth and of her children.

That…
