Description
Camille Pissarro was one of the leading figures of Impressionism. Unlike the other Impressionists, who mostly focused on bustling Paris and its fashionable suburbs in their work, Pissarro explored rural life. This richly detailed scene is close in theme and spirit to the works of Jean-François Millet, the painter of dignified peasant subjects of the previous generation. At the same time, Pissarro’s broad brushwork reveals his growing concern with painterly structure and physicality of form—concerns he shared with Paul Cézanne, his close friend and frequent painting companion at the time.

A massive home for an elderly couple and their very large family.
“The largest spaces are covered outdoor areas associated with terraces, gardens, and the pool itself. The region’s climate lends itself to prolonged lounging in these spaces, as long as they are protected from sun and rain. Most of the wooden roofing is made up of balconies and eaves. It is doubled indoors to create an air cushion, ensuring thermal efficiency and reducing the use of artificial air conditioning. It functions as a rainwater harvesting machine and allows for a reduction in indoor temperatures: the double roof can lower the indoor temperature by almost 10 degrees.”
