Secretive committee in Ontario ministry pushed crackdown on pro-Palestine activism ⋆ The Breach (breachmedia.ca)

A secretive committee within the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General has given “politically-motivated” backing to the Toronto police’s targeting of pro-Palestine activism, a Breach investigation can reveal.

The committee has attempted to impose more severe criminal charges against individuals involved in peaceful protests since Oct. 7, or thwart the dropping of charges, multiple lawyers told The Breach.

Known as the Hate Crime Working Group and formed in 2019, it is composed of nearly two dozen Crown prosecutors, some of whose public comments show pro-Israel and anti-Palestinian bias.

The committee’s chair has said she is “committed” to the state of Israel, while another member described a pro-Palestinian activist as a “terrorist” and collaborated with a group of lawyers that aggressively defend Israel’s assault on Gaza, which has killed 38,000 Palestinians.

In one case from 2021, involving a protest in front of the Israeli consulate of Toronto, the Hate Crime Working Group’s prosecutors had greater access to the consulate’s staff than the police.

Officially, the committee merely advises police about what criminal charges can be applied in “hate-related” investigations, as well as providing education and training to police across the province.

But The Breach investigation reveals it is playing an influential role behind the scenes.

The Rule of Law in Times of Crisis

History is littered with examples of times of crisis, when we become governed by our fears rather than our hopes, and the laws that should give us protection instead give us people to blame.

How have our public institutions responded to the pandemic?  Have emergency measures served the public good, or undermined public accountability?  Have policy makers protected or sacrificed the vulnerable?

On Tuesday 09 February 2021, I will moderate a panel at the Rule of Law conference, hosted by CIJA and the UJA Federation, on protecting minority rights during times of crisis.

Faith communities pledge challenge

In celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary, and to demonstrate the leadership role faith communities play in doing good for the benefit of all Canadians, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) has launched The Canadian Faith Communities Pledge Challenge, Pledge150! What: The campaign challenges leaders of faith communities—from every church, temple, mosque and synagogue,…

It’s our ‘Chai’ episode! We started it off by talking about Italian Eurocommunism and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA). We were joined by Josh Nathan Kazis, a staff writer at the Jewish Daily Forward, to talk about a growing scandal in New York City politics, reaching from the Mayor’s office to the orthodox communities of Borough Park and Williamsburg. This episode featured a description-free Shkoyach, with discussions of kosher labelling, kosher restaurant month, and the contentious subject of raisin challah. For the interview, we talked about the recent Jews of Color National Convening with conference organizer Leo Ferguson and Montreal activist Hirut Eyob. Finally, Aviva Stahl’s recent article for Alternet’s Grayzone Project is our recommendation for the week.

*EDIT: during this week’s Shkoyach segment, David convinced Sam that COR stood for ‘Council of Orthodox Rabbis.’ This is incorrect. It appears that COR is not an acronym at all, instead a mysterious shorthand used by the Kashruth Council of Canada to label their certified products. Please direct all questions their way.

A letter from Hon. Stockwell Day on the Toulouse Shooting

The Hon. Stockwell Day has really been impressing me lately (not that he isn’t always very impressive). I had the opportunity to meet him while I was in Washington DC a few weeks ago at the AIPAC Policy Conference. Stockwell spoke about Canada’s special tie to Israel and his deep personal connection to the land as a Christian.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank him for his ardent and unwavering support for Israel and his strong words regarding the tragic attack on Monday in Toulouse.

Stockwell Day’s Letter via The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs.

Here is a picture of the Canadian Student Delegation to AIPAC with the Hon. Stockwell Day from a few weeks ago:

Edit:

Since I made this post less than 5 minutes ago and found another letter on this matter, here is the letter that Elie Wiesel wrote on the same subject: Elie’s Letter.

PA Prime Minister Fayyad has also condemned the attacks. Glad this has become a non-partisan issue.
