Chapter 2: Magic Unmasked

Narrated by Nikki.

Nikki: Cool! How did you know the 3 of Spades was my card, Yoyo?

Narrator: Yoyo looked at me coyly, seeing the great magician she had just become in my wide eyes.

Narrator: The surprise and joy of magic did barrel rolls in my heart, mixing with curiosity and anticipation. I wondered then if I could learn how to do magic as well.

Nikki: How did you do it, Yoyo?

Yoyo: A magician never betrays her secrets.

Nikki: Could you teach me then? I think magic is super cool, and I would love it if I learned a few tricks.

Yoyo: Mystery is what gives magic its charm! If I taught you, you might not like it anymore. Being the audience is much better.

Yoyo: Alright, I gotta get back to it. I’ll show you another trick next time.

Narrator: Yoyo headed back to her room, but her deck of cards was still on the table. I stared at them for a long while, reliving the magical moment in my head.

Momo: Stop thinking about magic, Nikki! It’s dinner time! Mom made the ultimate BBQ!

Nikki: You go ahead, Momo. I’m still thinking about it…

Narrator: In the end, I turned on my computer and looked up “card tricks explained,” and picked out a video breakdown to watch.

Momo: Better finish that video quick, Nikki, before I finish this BBQ!

Nikki: Got it, Momo!

Narrator: At the end of the video, I grabbed the deck of cards and tried it for myself. I still felt a little incredulous. Was this all that magic was?

Narrator: After Momo came back, I applied what I’d learned and showed him the card trick, and true enough, it worked.

Momo: I can’t believe you learned how to do it so quickly, Nikki! How’d you do it?

Nikki: Well, I didn’t really shuffle the cards. I just need to keep most of the cards in the right order.

Narrator: I showed Momo the technique I learned from the video.

Nikki: All I have to do is remember the card before and after the card that was pulled, and I can figure it out no problem.

Narrator: After I explained the card trick to Momo, I saw a disappointed expression on his face.

Momo: So, that’s all there is to magic. A few simple tricks.

Narrator: Though the disappointment had lasted only for a moment, and Momo had quickly found another hobby, I never forgot the disappointment on his face, or what Yoyo said…

Narrator: Mystery is what gives magic its charm.

Choose either “Of course, magic should stay mysterious” or “A little revelation here and there is okay.”

If “mysterious,” …

You: I think so, too. Magic should stay mysterious, and not give up its secrets so easily.

Narrator: Yeah, I regretted telling Momo, too, making him lose interest in magic.

If “revelation,” …

You: In my opinion, getting a peek behind the curtain to satisfy your curiosity is no big deal.

Narrator: Maybe, but I do regret telling Momo, and making him lose interest in magic.

Narrator: The green leaves grew deeper in shade, and new trends took over the school. Magic slowly faded out of my life.

Narrator: Without an audience, I locked away the deck of cards that was once forgotten under Yoyo’s bed.

CHAPTER 2 # 6 - DISILLUSION

He was sure of it. He had to convince this merchant to do business with him. But when he looked up, he only saw a woman with a surprised look on her face.
Well, then. What could he have done to warrant such a reaction? This woman must have journeyed to many lands; she must have encountered many kinds of people. Although half-demons like him were very rare, she must have at least met some during her travels.
She gestured to a man who was with her in the stand before whispering a few words in his ear. He nodded then turned to Angel, who felt himself white as a sheet in front of this colossus of an individual, with dark eyes and practically no hair.
“I’m sorry, you can’t stay here!” said the man, whose voice was much higher pitched than his imposing size suggested.
“Excuse me, but why?” asked Angel, who, not wishing to provoke conflict, only wanted to try and understand. But the person remained silent, content to display an expression as fixed and lively as a wardrobe.
I shouldn’t insist… Angel thought before glancing at the woman who likely had a problem with him. There, he realized that the look on her face was far from worried or frightened, as he had often provoked in spite of himself throughout his life; her gaze expressed only disgust. In her eyes, he was less than a pest. Why such an attitude? He had no idea. After all, some distant lands remained shrouded in mystery, whose customs and traditions were poorly understood and documented.
Suddenly, Angel’s long tail unwillingly placed itself between his legs like that of a dog paralyzed by fear. A cold feeling crept into his heart. All these merchants surely belonged to the same caravan. If this woman despised him so much, what about the others?
Mortified, the half-demon lowered his head to avoid any further eye contact. His look fixed on the pavement rushing past his feet, he fled as fast as he could. His run only ended when… the door to his room was locked.

CHAPTER 2 # 5 - DISILLUSION

“And now what? Are you going to give up?”
Lying in his bed, looking tired and drawn out, Angel had been mulling over the events of the last few days for hours. Nothing had gone as planned.
He managed to escape from the gnome without coming to blows. But between the physical altercations and the straight-up refusals to interact, he didn’t get any conclusive results from all the merchants he tried to bargain with. Consumed by stress, he struggled to get to sleep until the first rays of dawn.
“NO! You did your best to get here! This is no time to run away!”

While trying to deal with shop owners was proving too complicated for the moment, there were always traveling traders. More open-minded due to them moving around constantly, negotiating with them would probably be easier. Having spent five months aboard a convoy, Angel knew what to expect.
The city was immense, and there were several marketplaces. At least one or two per district, but the largest was obviously the one near the castle. However, the events of the day prior dissuaded him from being too reckless. Maybe the one from the sixth floor would do the trick.
The task was straightforward: to identify potential new vendors to help grow the Dragonclaw business. Hydrabiss, a port city, welcomed merchants from all over the world, some traveling from far away lands. Successfully securing contracts with them would prove to be a real boon.

Finally reaching the market, Angel began to browse. Though his primary goal was to work, no one could have blamed him for wandering a little. Fruits, vegetables, pastries, cutlery, boots… The scents, the colors, amazed him. However, one of the stalls particularly caught his attention. It displayed shimmering outfits made of three large pieces of fabric: one for the top, one for the bottom, and a belt. The whole thing formed what looked like a dress.
How beautiful it was!
Almost otherworldly.
He reached out to feel the fabric of a long, loose sleeve.
Now that’s a foreign product!

CHAPTER 2 # 4 - DISILLUSION

Staring at him with his small, deep-black eyes, the merchant gripped the edge of the desk he stood behind with a clenched hand. A screech from the friction between his nails and the wood finally broke the silence. This noise, while soft, still disrupted the concentration of the unwanted customer, who then turned to him.
“Greetings! I’m Angel, I work for…” He didn’t have time to finish his sentence before the merchant pulled out the rug from under him.
“I don’t make deals with demons!” he retorted, trying to hide his fear behind a stern tone.
It was rare to meet a gnome; it was probably even rarer to be rebuked by one. Far from being aggressive, people knew them above all for their friendliness and joie de vivre, even if their small size and slim build also made them wary.
“No, you didn’t…” the half-demon tried to reply, unsettled by such vehemence.
“GET OUT OF MY SHOP!”
The gnome probably sensed his interlocutor’s unease. This had only served to boost his confidence.
Angel began to back away. The trader, more confident than ever, advanced from behind his counter. Grabbing the first object he could lay his hands on, he didn’t hesitate to go straight at the unwelcome and chase him away manu militari.
Even though the gnome didn’t pose a real threat to the half-demon, Angel still backed out of the building, protecting himself from the broom that the merchant flailed at him.
“Get out of here, I never want to see trash like you ever again!” the shopkeeper yelled at him.
His pupils as dilated as those of a frightened cat, Angel stood motionless in front of the shop entrance, staring at the furious gnome who spat this incomprehensible gibberish at him. Noises behind him prompted him to take a look back over his shoulder. Onlookers had gathered around them, cutting off his escape route!
