briar’s backstory. briar ( originally tristan ) is the prince of the tiny kingdom of reachwood. reachwood was originally allies to the faeries living in the hungry forest, but the faeries are now reported to be hostile. when he was six, briar’s mother went into this forest and never returned.
the king’s very concerned with his legacy and grew increasingly hostile when he realized briar’s anxiety issues weren’t being successfully eradicated. when briar turned twenty-three, the king remarried.
shortly afterwards, briar awoke tied to a rock at the edge of the forest, surrounded by his father and the court’s magicians. his father stabbed him with an intricately carved dagger, and briar felt an unknown magic surge through him that the magicians guided into a nearby gem. the more they took, the weaker he became. his father pressed them on until briar expired.
he woke to find himself unbound and mostly healed. what’s more, his father and the magicians seemed mysteriously unaware of his presence, only noting his absence when he was some distance away.
briar put as much space between himself and reachwood as possible. when he ran out of money, he spent some time barely scraping by before landing a steady job as a shelver at candlekeep. his father’s given out a story that his son had a mental break and needs to be retrieved so he can begin to recover.
whatever the magicians did to briar is still ongoing, making him a conduit to an unknown magic. he’s not able to harness it himself, but others can exploit it.
beings that breathe magic like air (faeries, elementals, etc) can channel it if they’re within five feet of him. otherwise, magic users will need spells to sense or harness it.
if someone exploits the conduit, it drains him and could potentially kill him.
