SPT-1/SPT-2/SPT-3 Applications

  • SPT-1: Best suited for very light-duty, low-stress indoor applications. Think of lightweight indoor holiday lights (not LEDs, which often use even smaller wire), some low-wattage decorative lighting, or simple DIY projects where the cord is fully protected and not subject to handling.
  • SPT-2: The workhorse of service cords. Its applications are vast: table lamps, floor lamps, clocks, small kitchen appliances (blenders, coffee makers), power tools, extension cords, and most indoor household electronics. It’s suitable for applications where the cord may be moved or handled occasionally.
  • SPT-3: Designed for more demanding environments. It’s ideal for heavy-duty appliances, commercial lighting, outdoor-use extension cords (often labeled as “outdoor” cords), and applications where the cord might be exposed to physical wear, pinching, weather, or higher temperatures.

When to Choose

Choose T90 when the cable needs extra protection from physical damage, chemicals, or oils, and a higher temperature rating is beneficial.

Choose TWN75 for standard electrical wiring in buildings, especially if the local electrical code specifies a wet-location rated wire for the installation.

TWN75 is a single-conductor, thermoplastic-insulated, nylon-jacketed wire rated for 600V. It operates effectively in dry or damp environments with conductor temperatures up to 75°C. Commonly used in North American and Canadian markets, TWN75 is widely applied in machine tools, household appliances, control systems, and power distribution. Key characteristics include PVC insulation, a nylon jacket, oil resistance, abrasion resistance, and suitability for direct burial (when installed according to specifications).

T90 Nylon Wire is a type of cable that complies with North American UL/CSA standards (such as UL83), featuring a nylon jacket. It is commonly used in construction, appliances, and automotive wiring. The key characteristic of this wire is its nylon outer sheath, which provides excellent abrasion resistance, moisture resistance, chemical resistance, and flame-retardant properties. When combined with internal insulation materials (like THHN/THWN), it is highly suitable for harsh environments with oil, grease, or mechanical wear.

When to Use SJOOW vs. SOOW: The Key Decision Factors

Choosing between SJOOW and SOOW boils down to three main factors:1. Voltage Requirement:

  • Choose SJOOW for applications at or below 300 volts.
  • Choose SOOW for applications up to 600 volts. Using a 300V cable in a 600V circuit is a severe safety hazard.

2. Duty Cycle and Environment:

  • Choose SJOOW for intermittent, lighter-duty use in workshops, homes, or for portable tools. It’s flexible and easier to handle for frequent coiling/uncoiling in less harsh conditions.
  • Choose SOOW for continuous, heavy-duty use in industrial, construction, or outdoor environments. Its thicker jacket provides superior protection against crushing, abrasion, oils, and extreme weather.

3. Cost and Flexibility:

  • SJOOW is generally more cost-effective for suitable applications and is slightly more flexible due to its thinner jacket.
  • SOOW is a higher initial investment but offers greater longevity and safety in harsh conditions, providing better value over time for demanding jobs.
