Calendrier.
Boîtier: titane. Etanche à 100 m. Couronne vissée.
Lunette: tournante unidirectionnelle à cliquet.
Glace: saphir, antireflet double face.
Diamètre: 43 mm.

A while back I outlined my pursuit for the “perfect” integrated amplifier. I haven’t done much since beyond perusing the usual sources online, and in the meantime my separates setup (Monarchy NM24 tube DAC/line stage + ME Sound 550 II amplifier) was proving inconvenient for everyday listening. So I began scouring the used market for integrateds under $1200 or so as a stopgap until I was prepared for a more serious investment.
[[MORE]]I spied a number of listings for recent entry-level Simaudio units, but had some reservations based on some less-than-rave reviews and the seemingly high turnover on the used market. (Incidentally, Hifi Shark is an extremely convenient search engine/price tracker, if you know what you’re looking for.) The Bryston B60, on the other hand, is a known quantity - I briefly owned one way back in 2000, reviewed it a few years later in Bound for Sound and have recommended it to friends. While it’s not the ultimate in fidelity, I knew it to be reliable and musical, with an endearing warmth and tunefulness.
The B60 Used Market
The B60 has been around for two decades with very little change in design. Along the way there have been some tweaks to early models, the addition of remote control and onboard phono and DAC options, a switch to double-sided PCBs and “SST” output devices, and in 2006 a cosmetic update to match the rest of the “C” series line.
The unit I purchased off eBay has serial number 602xxx with date code 0505, meaning it was manufactured in February 2005. It’s in so-so condition and I wound up paying a little under $700 - there was more wear and tear than the buyer original described so I was able to haggle for a price adjustment. It is a pre-C, non-R model (no remote control), which I’ve seen go for between USD $550 to $800 depending on age and condition, with R models fetching about $150 more. Naturally, Bryston’s 20 year factory warranty is a big selling point (though note that starting 2006, a copy of the original sales receipt from an authorized retailer is required).

My B60′s guts - note the newer-style output devices in TO-247 packages. Some caps have also been swapped.
The Sound of a Classic
Out of the box, my used B60 sounded much in line with expectations, which is to say very good. It has the smooth, grain-free midrange and full mid-bass just as I remembered, and really has a knack for carrying a tune. The warmth is welcome with my Merlin TSM speakers, which tend towards leanness, and added much-needed body to cello and piano and helped make e.g. basso continuo lines in Bach clearer.
Compared to really good separates, its limitations remain: somewhat limited detail and transparency, a less-than-sparkly treble, limited soundstage depth, murky resolution at the back of the stage, some rounding of dynamic edges, and power that belies the 60wpc rating but won’t be mistaken for a 150wpc standalone amp. It might also be just a bit less warm and full than the older-vintage units I’ve auditioned in the past. Word on the street is that the pre-SST builds sounded fuller due to their discontinued TO-3 (metal-can) Motorola output devices. I certainly can’t confirm this based on aural memory in a totally different environment, and I don’t think the difference is so large as to justify seeking the older models.
In any case, I’ve been using the B60 for everyday listening for about 3 months now, and I can say that it is still a uniquely satisfying little amp. Whether it’s Beethoven string quartets, Mahler symphonies, Britten cello sonatas, Bach oboe concerti or the occasional jazz number or Spotify pop playlist, the B60 has a way of bringing out the essence of a melody that lets one put aside its deviations from transparency and just enjoy the music.
Certainly for $700 used (and considering a new B60R SST lists for $3600 now), it’s a tremendous buy. All these years later, the B60 still punches way above its literal and figurative weight. The bulletproof operation, svelte packaging and good looks (my wife, who generally thinks all hifi gear is ugly, approves of the sleek and simple design) are also major bonuses.
The question is… can we make it even better? More on that soon…
