Adapting Persona - Genericizing cast ages
One of the most interesting and lightly challenging parts of genericizing character ages /implicitly but not explicitly aging characters up is trying to write around little bits and pieces this leaves behind that wouldnt make as much sense in an aged-up context.
For instance, (and yes I am dreadfully behind in editing) In editing together footage to be used as the basis for the eventual comic script, I realized that I couldnt keep parts of Sojiro’s dialogue from where he first meets Ren intact, because it implies that a guardian of some sort would have to be involved in certain things.
Ren’s parents have kicked him out, they’ve abandoned him the moment he was declared a violent criminal in the eyes of the law, the same as in the original. But this isnt going to be remarked upon here, and not by Sojiro. He’s also not going to mention taking Ren to register at Shujin and how its “A Waste of [his] Sunday.” Instead, I think I’ll move the train accident scene (not the part with Sae and the SIU discussing it, though) up to in-between Ren going to sleep the first night, and waking up the next day, with the scene of him entering The Velvet Room for the first time being on the 2nd night. The train accident will be the big news story starting in the morning the next day. (They’ll still be talking about it in the evening when Sae and the Siu discuss it. Its a big event that involves a lot of injury, following several other incidents so it makes sense to be talked about for a while) The trouble with the trains will take a while to clean up, so of course, people are going by car – traffic is up, and it still makes sense when Sojiro and Ren get caught in it, leading to their conversation in the car.
This will work even better, since a long time ago I’ve decided for the most part to wait until much later to show the flashback scene of Ren encountering “drunk man” – the incident that lead to his arrest. The entire thing. I will MAYBE show a tiny bit when we first start the proper main story from the framing device, but I havent decided, and its entirely possible the only time before the point in which I’m planning to show all of it together It’ll be mentioned is Sojiro mentioning it when he’s bringing Ren up to see his room for the first time.
Of course, all of this is subject to change, but still, Its interesting to figure out how to lay things out in a way that works for how I want to present this story.
Of course, there are also all sorts of very small things. You may have noticed that, consistently my drawings of various Persona characters across all the games are missing numbers on their uniforms. In genericizing the cast’s ages, I felt like not having their school year on their clothing was essential.

ALTThis is a lot more obvious on some uniforms than others.
Similarly, With the exception of Shujin Academy, that works just fine as-is, pretty much all other school names will have to be slightly re-worked. “Gekkoukan Private High School” becomes “Gekkoukan Private Academy” , “St. Hermelin Private High School” becomes “St Hermelin Institute” , “Yasogami High” and “Kosei High” become just “Yasogami” and “Kosei School” respectfully.
Sorry for this being so wordy. I’m sure its really boring. Its just something I have to think about a lot, and for some reason I wanted to talk about it.
