I’m pretty sure at this point that She’s the only god who gets things said about Her in cultural contexts still.

deities tied to my uni education

today i decided to switch my university minor from theater studies to history. i like theater and plays, i enjoy the complex thoughts and questions surrounding the artform on a philosophical level and i enjoy watching some of them too. however in reality i just can’t bring myself to care about the “great and important” plays, especially hungarian ones, plus ticket prices are through the roof - i cannot even see plays in person.

i feel like if theater studies was really my way, i would enjoy it more, and would’ve initiated a deeper connection with Dionüszosz, but i just can’t.

i always liked history and i discovered Kleió, muse of history, and i will look into how to honor her specifically. or i was also thinking about reaching out to Thoth and Seshat, though syncretism would require much care and more thought on my part. i will see.

my major (japanese language and culture) is tied to Athéné and Hermész already so im not worried about that. they helped me through hard times.

trying out weaving for the first time yesterday reminded me what crafts and time spent on trying new things means. it reminded me of Athéné, my childhood - doing crafts in kindergarten and elementary school.

it was a calming, monotone experience and even though it turned out very badly, i enjoyed the process and the handywork i put into it. i am looking forward to a creative year with Athéné by my side, and a year filled with trial and error.

Athene: I love cooking breakfast. It makes the whole house smell like bacon.

Elliot: That’s true, but it also smells like fire and panic.

Athene: You and the smoke detector need to get off my case.

I’m really impressed that this random guy managed something that no god, Giant or any other kind of opponent of Athena ever has (as far as I know).

„Adjoining the land of Theisoa is a village called Teuthis, which in old days was a town. In the Trojan war the inhabitants supplied a general of their own. His name according to some was Teuthis, according to others Ornytus. When the Greeks failed to secure favorable winds to take them from Aulis, but were shut in for a long time by a violent gale, Teuthis quarrelled with Agamemnon and was about to lead the Arcadians under his command back home again. Whereupon, they say, Athena in the guise of Melas, the son of Ops, tried to turn Teuthis aside from his journey home. But Teuthis, his wrath swelling within him, struck with his spear the thigh of the goddess, and actually did lead his army back from Aulis. On his return to his native land the goddess appeared to him in a vision with a wound in her thigh. After this a wasting disease fell on Teuthis, and its people, alone of the Arcadians, suffered from famine. Later, oracles were delivered to them from Dodona, telling them what to do to appease the goddess, and in particular they had an image of Athena made with a wound in the thigh. This image I have myself seen, with its thigh swathed in a purple bandage.” (Pausanias, Description of Greece 8.28.4-6)

Athena’s Birthday on the 3rd

I was wondering why Athena was listed on Third in Hellenion’s calendar since I could not find it in Hesiod’s Works & Days.

With the help of lovely person on discord I found “The Sacred and Civil Calendar of the Athenian Year” by Jon D. Mikalson page 16 (PDF):

“Day 3. Harpokration (also Etym. Magn. 767.40 ff. and Suda) states that this day was Athena’s birthday: τριτομηνίς· Λυκοῦργος ἐν τῷ Περὶ τῆς ἱερείας· τὴν τρίτην τοῦ μὸς τριτομηνίδα ἐκάλουν· δοκεῖ δὲ γενεθλιος τῆς ᾿Αθηνᾶς. In Bekker’s Anecd. 1.306.32 an abbreviated citation indicates that there was a public celebration on this day: τριτομηνίς· ἑορτὴ ἀγομένη ᾿Αθηνᾶς τῇ τρίτη. Photios, Suda, and the scholiast to 11. 8.39 claim the twenty-eighth day (τρίτη φθίνοντος) as Athena’s birthday […]. Schmidt […] and Jacoby […] appear to accept both days as her birthday, but the fact that all the other "Olympian” deities had their birthdays in the first decade of the month would suggest that Athena’s birthday must fall into this period. The variant tradition of the twenty-eighth day as her birthday may have arisen from the celebration of the Panathenaia on Hekatombaion 28. However that may be, the evidence above is sufficient to establish that the third day of each month was devoted to Athena. The scholiast to Aristophanes Plut. 1126 claims that this day was sacred to the Charites: ἔξω τῶν ἑορτῶν Ἥεραί τινες τοῦ μηνὸς ἡμεραι νόμηνησι θεοῖς τισίν, οἷον νουμηνία καὶ ἑδόμη ᾿Απόλλωνι, τετρὰς Ἑρμῆ καὶ ὀγδόη Θησεῖ· Χάρισι τρίτη. There was, of course, a cult of the Charites in Athens (Aristophanes Thesm. 300 and Pausanias 9.35.1-4), but this scholion alone associates the third day of the month with them.“

I managed to find the primary source! In Lexicon of the Ten Orators by Harpokration

"§ t32 Tritomenis: Lykourgos in On the Festival. The third of the month was called the "Tritomenis” and Athena seems to have been born at that time. Istros also says that she is called Tritogeneia because of this and is equated with the Moon.“ — Link

Why is Athena Glaukopis?

  • „The air they called Athena, as the name is translated. They considered her to be the daughter of Zeus and conceived of her as a virgin, because of the fact that the air is by its nature uncorrupted and occupies the highest part of the entire universe. For the latter reason also the myth arose that she was born from the head of Zeus. … They add that she is also called Glaukopis, not because she has blue (γλαυκόσ) eyes, as some Greeks have held – a silly explanation, for sure – but because the air has a bluish cast.” (Diodorus Siculus, Library of History 1.12.7-8).
  • „The grey (γλαυκός) colour [of Athena’s eyes] points to the same kind of thing: for the strongest wild animals, such as leopards and lions, are grey-eyed, their flashing gaze hard to return. But some say that Athena was made like this because the aether is grey. … Snakes, like the owl, are associated with her because their eyes, which are grey, have some similarity with hers: for the snake has a terrifying way of looking. … The olive is her gift because it is evergreen, and because it is somewhat grey.” Cornutus, Greek Theology 20.36-38) + „He [Zeus] is crowned with olive because olive is evergreen, lustrous, and useful for many things; or because of the similarity of its grey colour to heaven.” (Cornutus, Greek Theology 9.9).
  • „But when I saw that the statue of Athena had blue (γλαυκός) eyes I found out that the legend about them is Libyan. For the Libyans have a saying that the Goddess is the daughter of Poseidon and Lake Tritonis, and for this reason has blue eyes like Poseidon.” (Pausanias, Description of Greece 1.14.6)
  • „Eustathius could not make up his mind, either. His longest discussion rejected the idea of colour. Athene was γλαυκῶπις not because of the colour of her eyes, but because her gaze was terrible, like that of lions and basilisks. On the other hand, the word was used to indicate her relationship with Zeus. …” (P.G. Maxwell-Stuart, Studies in Greek Colour Terminology: Volume 1. γλαυκός)

It was nice and a little funny finding a prayer to Athene written in Latin and not Greek. I speak Latin is why.

On an Attic krater from about 460 BCE, two potters build a large vessel on a wheel. Athena stands with them in the workshop, what must have been a hot, stuffy, dirty, and impure place. While images and talismans were set up at kilns to protect the integrity of the oven and the goods processed within it, we have here the goddess directly overseeing and protecting her followers, their works, and thus their economic success. The votives and inscriptions presented to Athena on the Akropolis suggest that for Athenian craftspeople, the close connection between successful craft production and Athena’s blessings were very real. In the case of this vase, the potters do not see Athena, but her presence is nevertheless undeniable. The krater’s depiction conveys the sense that the goddess protects the potters, perceives their artisanal skills, and guards their success, just as she must have done for the real craftsmen as they made this very pot in a similar workshop. Did the vessel’s painter think Athena was really there looking over his shoulder while he worked away? We cannot know, but he certainly imagined (and imaged) a world in which it was so. The protective role of Athena at potter’s kilns is explicitly stated in a Greek poem that may date to the late 6th century; Athena is implored, “hold your hand above the kiln.”
