The Gathering of Celestial Maidens ✨

A radiant assembly of celestial maidens—an Apsara, a Feitian, a Tennin, a Diwata, and a Bidadari—gathered in a luminous, cloud-wreathed grotto at dawn: each figure distinct yet harmonized, robes and scarves of flowing silk, gossamer wings or billowing sashes trailing like watercolor strokes, hair adorned with gold filigree, lotus and cloud motifs, and jeweled hairpins reflecting soft pearlescent light; the Apsara poses with a graceful dance gesture, the Feitian drifts with translucent scarves and jade lanterns, the Tennin holds a celestial biwa with strings catching sunlight, the Diwata stands serene with woven nature ornaments and faint vines, and the Bidadari smiles gently with feathered accents and warm golden glow; misty waterfalls and floating lotus pads frame the scene, glowing motes and drifting petals fill the air, palette of dawn pastels and warm golds against cool jade and indigo, cinematic backlighting, shallow depth of field, fine textile and skin detail, photographic realism, photo‑realistic 8K, 16:9 aspect ratio.

Apsara—the celestial singers and dancers in Indian mythology. Originally water nymphs, the apsaras act as the muse and provide sensual pleasure for both gods and men. They have been beautifully depicted in sculpture and painting in India and throughout areas of South and Southeast Asia influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism. Notable examples are the 5th–6th-century frescoes at Ajanta in India, at Sigiriya in Sri Lanka, and the sculptures and bas-reliefs decorating the temples of Angkor, Cambodia.

Dancers in the Stone

Banteay Kdei Temple, Angkor

Banteay Kdei is a pretty little temple in the Angkor complex in Cambodia. Built in the 12th-13th century AD, one its main features is a “Hall of Dancers”.

Cambodian traditional dancing is inspired by Indian dances with very elaborate movements of legs, hands and feet.

A Morning Walk, Angkor

Prasat Kravan is one of the many temples we saw when we went back to Angkor this past February.

Lions standing guard. Prasat Kravan is a small 10th century temple dedicated to Vishnu in 921AD.

This is an 8-arm representation of Vishnu. As in all the temples, offerings are made daily. Lotus flowers. Water. Vishnu is the Preserver in the Trimurti he forms with Brahma and Shiva.

The small temples…

Lolei temple, Angkor

Our second day in Angkor took us far from the madding crowd, to the Rolous group of temples, half an hour to the east of Angkor proper. Lolei is a very small site, only one small temple remains, to the right. A buddhist monastery has been added; monks were chanting prayers during all our visit.

Frangipani trees always remind me of West Africa. Beautiful, fragrant flowers.

The temples were…

An Apsara dancer sculpture on the wall of Angkor Wat, 12th century. Robam Tep Apsara (Khmer: របាំទេពអប្សរា) is one of the traditional dances of Cambodia. It is played by women, sewn into tight-fitting traditional dress, whose graceful, sinuous gestures are codified to narrate classical myths or religious stories. It is one of the national symbols of Cambodia.
