A theory about the real Annabelle Doll

First let me establish here that I do NOT believe any claim by The Warrens. I am a skeptical paranormal investigator with a diploma in Parapsychology from Stratford.

I believe that the supernatural is possible but I also know when to suspicious and I am aware that many so-called experts in matters of the paranormal are of a dubious nature.

I do not believe that the Annabelle doll was originally haunted by a ghost or inhabited by a demon. However as the collective fear of Annabelle grew (partly thanks to The Conjuring movies and spin-offs) so did the belief in the malevolent nature of the doll.

One subject in the field of parapsychology that has always fascinated me is the notion of Tulpa and Egregore. Egregore is the notion of something becoming manifest because of a strong collective belief. Tulpa is similar but it’s from an individual. Sometimes people online use these terms to describe the creation of an imaginary friend with realistic traits or possible psychic phenomena attached, implyng that the entity had become self-aware and manifest.

The concept of belief being strong enough to make something manifest has always interested me ever since I discovered the notion in The Real Ghostbusters animated series where the collective idea of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson caused them to manifest as self-aware ghost-like entities. This was an Egregore concept in a childre’s show but I did not know the term yet.

The term Lycanthropy can be used to mean the condition of being a werewolf (a lycanthrope) or the belief that one is a werewolf. The term is interchangeable in its use because the belief can be strong enough to manifest apparent physical transformations such as enhanced strength, ferocity, heightened senses, and excessive hair growth. By the technicality of belief causing physical symptoms, yes, werewolves are real. It’s similar to pseudocyesis (False pregnancy) where the belief or want to be pregnant is so strong that it causes physical manifestations such as distended abdomen, missed periods, and hormone changes.

Another pop culture example of a Tulpa effect is how the has-been horror actor character, Peter Vincent, in the 1985 Fright Night movie convinces himself that he is the hero he always pretended to be in movies, and in doing so, he genuinely becomes that hero. This manifestation of self-creation or self-reinvention is (in my opinion) another type of Tulpa effect.

Now, as I said, I do not think that there was a demon attached to the real Annabelle doll. Just as I do not believe that Ouija boards are innately evil. Ouija boards, pendulums, and automatic writing are often subconsciously controlled by the ideomotor effect. But a strong belief that these things are evil could trigger a Tulpa or Egregore effect. it’s popular to think Ouija boards are powerful and evil portals even though they’re just glossy cardboard with the alphabet printed on it.

With that in mind, I believe that poor Raggedy Anne Doll (Annabelle) might now be infused with negative emotions, fear, and imagined malevolence thanks to the collective beliefs of those who fell for The Warrens original con.

In short, the doll might now have some malevolent energy or presence attached to it, but ironically, it’s because of the popularity of the initial lie. In theory, if there is something there, that means the Warrens CREATED the evil they claimed they want to protect people from- created it with the spread of popularity of their initial con.

It’s amazing how being given an hourly task to perform for her can transform my whole day into thinking about her, checking how long I have left before I need to follow her instructions, constantly waiting for the next chance to please her.

Arthur finds Annabelle in the snow after the gang has spent weeks looking for her. It’s clear she was brutalized by her captors, the O'Driscolls. How will he break the news to Dutch?

Suggestive art under the cut 👇

Finally posting these drawings I did of Annabelle. I can’t stop thinking about her.

I like to think Dutch met her 10 years before they got together when she was growing up in a puritanical religious situation (likely a Mormon residential school owned by her parents) and she kind of painted him as a god in her mind for years, even after she escaped her situation and hardened some and ultimately deconstructed. When she met Dutch again and they became a couple(Annabelle is 23 and Dutch is 32) all her deconstruction kind of falls apart and she essentially worships him. When their relationship inevitably goes south, she feels abandoned by God again. And the second time hurts so much worse. Tragic stuff but I like to think her and Arthur get a chance to bond over this before she dies. Of course, it doesn’t change the string of events, but it’s nice to offer her some closure, and of course, pass the guilt Dutch refused to feel onto Arthur.

Annabelle:
💪 What random skill are they weirdly proud of?
She’s surprisingly good at doing braids! She loved doing Alice’s hair, she just never bothers with her own hair since she’ cutting (hacking) it off and it’s not as pretty as her sisters’ so there’s no point (according to her)

🌅 Are they a sunrise / sunset person - what do they think about while looking at their favorite?
You are SO mean for asking that since she’s never really seen either, but IF she gets to see both I think she’d prefer sunrise. It’d give her a positive outlook. The night has finally ended and another day of possibilities is arriving. That sort of thing

Callista:
🦋 What seemingly insignificant memory do they cherish the most?
Having her first cup of coffee in a silent office

👶 Baby picture of them - what’s the most embarrassing thing about it?
She’s wearing either too small or too big hand-me-downs

🔥 What’s something they’d burn the world down to protect?
Other than her pride, yeah but that’s a secret 😇

🧸 Do they still have a childhood comfort object? Where is it now?
No, none. She wants to leave that part of her life behind

my last photo with annabelle. it was surreal. sitting with her and loving her. and knowing she wasn’t going home. she purred in my lap her deep, happy purrs. she was always a pain in the butt and kept out of sight, but when she wanted to cuddle, she was there. rolling over to show me her “moon bear” belly…

I was talking when she took her last breath. I’ll hate myself forever for that. the doctor was like “she’s gone. I’m sorry she’s gone” and rushed out. it was an er. so I don’t fault her for that. she was respectful.

I just always wanted to tell everyone that I had her since she was this big!

also, I should say: she’s alive in this photo. happy to be held by her Papa! she looks so happy…

1.

Annabelle:

Most things she can get a hold of. Just general trinkets. And rats.

Callista:

Maybe jewelry with cross iconography. Or money lol

9:

Annabelle:

Yes, the Abbot. The man/thing that terrorized her town throughout her life and took her sister’s legs. She’s glad she wasn’t the one to do it though.

Callista:

Yes and yes. The big one though is complicated on the latter question lol

4.

Annabelle: Most would turn her into a blushing mess tbh. She’s a virgin and JUST gave her first kiss (on the cheek)

Callista:

She likes most words (that I can think of) but cringes at a lot of the names (mommy, daddy, bitch etc)

1. Does your oc like getting revenge on people that have wronged them?

She likes to steal stuff and do petty “pranks” for revenge but not actually hurt someone. She learnt that recently that it doesnt change anything but to add misfortune in the world.

3. Is your oc the type to leave the last piece of food for someone else, or take it for themselves before someone else can claim it?

Depends! If she eats with strangers/people she doesn’t care about that much she’ll take the last piece. Nothing can go to waste.

If it’s for friends or family she’ll let it for them (stealth it onto their plate when they aren’t looking). Food to her is the most valuable thing to have so she’ll give it away as a form of love. Knowing how much it hurts to go hungry and she wants them to be healthy and strong.

Callista

2. What kinds of things does your oc get jealous about?

Answered!

6. Does your oc put on real clothes every day or only if they have to go out?

She’ll almost always put on “real clothes” just so she can always be ready to go out and/or be seen. It just varies from how elaborate the outfits are depending if she knows for sure she’s going out or not.

She’ll schedule days when she’s going to wear lounge wear lol

10. Does your oc enjoy hurting others, whether it be physically or emotionally?

Answered!

Annabelle:

Nooo, not at all! She feels so bad about it. She’ll defend herself and others but wishes she didn’t have to. She’s only wanted to hurt/kill a person once and in the end she’s kinda glad that she wasn’t the one to do it.

Callista:

Yes and no.

She likes the way it makes her feel. It’s an outlet for her own bottled emotions and it makes her feel big and strong.

However, it pushes to a point where she doesn’t like the person she becomes/is at those moments. Its just an addictive feeling and thus difficult for her to switch patterns and become a different person
