So, I had a song stuck in my head that I hadn’t heard in a while (otherside by red hot chili peppers), and decided to figure out the meaning. I saw that other people found the meaning to be about struggling with addiction and bad habits trying to resurface. And I can see where their interpretation are coming from…
but the lyrics ‘gotta take it on the other side’ was what was on loop in my brain and it always reminded me of the idiom 'turn the other cheek’. So I looked up the different meanings for it, and it’s things like 'maintain honor to shame the wrongdoer’, 'not worth the escalation to come’ and 'express forgiveness to avoid conflict’. Just with the lyrics i remembered I thought they all fit into each of the sections but when I listened to it to get a better feel of the song section by section…
So it starts off with him hearing someone’s “voice through a photograph”, bringing up all these memories of a person. “Once you know, you can never go back” to me means he is being haunted by something underlying the memories, something that can no longer be addressed.
“take it on the other side” feels to me like he is trying to forgive himself to move forward.
“centeries are what it meant to me” they were important to him. “Cemetery where I marry the sea” they died and he can’t move on. “A stranger thing could never change my mind.” He is determined he won’t.
“gotta take it on the other side” I could kinda see this as 'maintaining honor to shame the wrongdoer’ one, but 'not worth the effort, may escalate’ fits better in a sad way. Relationships take a lot of effort and escalations usually lead to deep connections.
“pour my life into a paper cup, ashtray is full and I’m spilling my guts” using intoxication to numb and escape but he ends up dwelling on the loneliness and opening up about it, only for “she wants to know if I’m still a slut”
That feels like a direct hit for me. Bringing him to a breaking point. The “take it on the other side” here feels like it’s being used to forgive her and just be compliant to what she wants to avoid conflict. Too intoxicated to fight it maybe?
“A scarlet starlit and shes in my bed” probably him waking up the morning after. “A candidate for the soulmate bled” seems like a flashback of who he lost. “Push the trigger, pull the thread.” Seems like he is feeling regret and betrayal.
“I gotta take it on the other side” this is where I would put the “maintain honor to shame the wrongdoer”, like to punish himself, because
“turn me on and take me for a hard ride. Burn me out and leave me on the other side” is pure self destruction. Letting himself get used and hoping he burns out. “I yell and tell it that it’s not my friend.” Trying to get himself to stop the self destruction. “ I tear it down, I tear it down, then it’s born again” but he can’t get rid of the guilt.
“how long, how long will I slide?” Unable to forgive himself, he wonders how he can hold on.
“I separate my side, I don’t” he tries to distance himself from it outwardly, but he can’t on the inside.
“I don’t believe it’s bad” maybe talking about dying, maybe talking about what he feels guilty about.
“Slit my throat, that’s all I ever had” suffocating in guilt.
“I don’t believe it’s sad” doesn’t think dying would be sad; loneliness.

Yeah this song is most definitely about being haunted and blaming himself about the loss of someone (most likely intimately) important to them. Getting consumed by loneliness and ending up in a self destructive mess. Unable to get closure, he’s not able to forgive himself and craves death to either reunite or get closure or even thinks he just thinks he deserves it.
Welp that’s my take on the song stuck in my head. Might do another one if I get another song stuck up there.
