Aimeric and Laurent

this probably has been said in some way before but I need to shitpost. So. Ehe.

Sometimes, I think about how Aimeric was referred to as a child while Laurent is an adult despite them being pretty close in age. And then I think about how that was probably because Laurent realized that he was being sexually abused by the r*gent, and eventually came to the conclusion that the r*gent didn’t love him. He essentially broke free from one of the cycles his uncle trapped him in, and that’s why he’s referred to as an adult. He stopped being mentally dependent on someone very dangerous and toxic all by himself, which is something the realistically requires a lot of perseverance and willpower and it’s something that is very much easier said than done.

But with Aimeric, until his dying breath, he was convinced that the r*gent loved him. He was a victim that never got the chance to fully realize that he was being abused, and he was a victim that genuinely didn’t want to believe that. That’s why he’s a child; he was mentally dependent on the r*gent’s supposed “love” for him and couldn’t stand the idea of anything that implied otherwise.

Going back to Laurent, I think Aimeric is a version of him BEFORE he realized that he was being abused. Meaning there definitely was a time where Laurent was just like him in a sense that, he had a hard time believing he wasn’t loved, and definitely didn’t want to believe that his uncle was abusing him. So like if we take it a step further, I think Aimeric dying symbolizes Laurent’s child self “dying”. This is further supported by the fact that Aimeric took his own life himself, which I think is a reference to how Laurent forced himself to becoming an adult by “killing his childhood self” (aka coming to the realization about his dangerous situation). Another way to put this, is that Laurent was forced to grow up whereas Aimeric never got that chance.

Now what’s sad about Aimeric being a child (besides the obvious) is uh. Well. Jord. I haven’t read the short story between them so I can’t say much, but the relationship between Jord and Aimeric is sad specifically for Aimeric for several reasons. One of them is that since Jord is the one that suggested that Aimeric is a child verbally, this means that Aimeric has never experienced an actual relationship where he is considered to be on equal footing with someone. I mean just the fact that Jord refers to him as a child just sets off a lot of power imbalance flags (in his relationship with Jord) and this is in contrary to Laurent and Damen’s relationship. Obviously their relationship at first was very much not equal, but one of their biggest moments is when Damen affirms to Laurent that he is a man, not a boy when they’re about to have sex. (“As a man takes a man.”)

This is also why I’m hesitant on shipping Jord and Aimeric. Although Jord is definitely not the r*gent, he’s still someone that did have sex with Aimeric WHILE considering him a child. (Again maybe the short story says otherwise sjejdnr) Now I don’t want to compare and Jord with the r*gent, but you can’t deny that there are similarities. That being said, what’s interesting is that while Jord considers Aimeric a child, the r*gent considers him an adult (because of the r*gent losing interest in those above 15). This fact really supports the idea of Aimeric never really growing up, because while his two “love interests” (if you can even call it that) loved him in different parts of his life, they both saw him as a child.

So anyway. That’s it. Have a goodnight and feel free to interact:)

So I made this meme five years ago while reading “Captive Prince” for the first time.

And now, finally having developed enough braincels (hopefully) and having read it again, I want to genuinely ask: are there really people, who hate Nicaise and/or Aimeric?? Really?? Is it possible to feel anything but painful sympathy towards them??

I mean, yes, they did not nice (meaning Nicaise) and pretty terrible (meaning Aimeric) things, but when we get to know their fate and their motifs, it becomes impossible to hate them, right? Right??

The point about the Regent is still true though.

first of all, i would like to give a shout out and a huge thanks to the people who have been hard at work updating the capri fan wiki to this day. and second of all, the following will contain discussions of s/a and minor spoilers for the first two books in the captive prince trilogy.

i was reading through the wiki and saw that these were in the entries for aimeric and govart’s pages respectively.

and honestly? i think that this is lowkey just personal conjecture on the part of the author of this page. or at the very least, this is not at all the vibe i got from reading that scene. i am also aware that damen is not always the most reliable narrator and capri in general relies a lot on reading in between the lines, but here’s my problem with it.

this is the conversation in question:

the only people we ever see or know about govart explicitly assaulting, or attempting to assault, are erasmus and damen, both of whom he believes to be akielon slaves gifted to the regent and to the crown prince that fucking hates akielos and gave him permission to rape in the ring. every other time he fucks someone, he’s either literally in a brothel paying them for their services, or in the case of the stable boy from prince’s gambit, has consensual sex with him under the promise of being paid.

why would laurent and jord lightheartedly joke about their own people, other veretians—servants who are literally just there to wait on them and who they have no personal beef with at all—getting raped by govart? it just doesn’t make sense to me, considering what we know about both of them and how they feel about govart.

i read this as laurent telling jord to warn off any servants from attempting to curry favor with govart, who they know is the regent’s man and is now the captain of the prince’s guard. he also calls out aimeric in specific because it’s likely he knows, or at least has his suspicions, that he’s secretly working for the regent, and completely ignores all of aimeric’s kowtowing in prince’s gambit. he doesn’t want aimeric and govart together because he doesn’t want them working together. he also has no problem with the idea of letting his men gang rape aimeric and having jord watch after his betrayal is revealed, to the point where even laurent’s men think he’d be fine with it too before telling him.

even if laurent doesn’t know aimeric is working for the regent, or aimeric hasn’t chosen a side yet (which we know isn’t true, since the regent approached aimeric before laurent left arles and aimeric never makes it back from campaign), he still understands that aimeric is highly susceptible to emotional manipulation and is eager to please whoever he views as having the most power and influence.

well… that’s the end of my rant… thanks to anyone who managed to read this far and is reading this now—you’re a real one.

also, if you’re like one of the two followers who are wondering where i’ve been, or where all i my capri posts have gone, i moved everything over to my sideblog @diabhalic for organization. i’m a little more consistently active over there and it’s where i’ll be posting all of my capri edits from now on. byeeeeeeeee 😘

I do like Captive Prince. Yes, it has things I would critique about it (Laurent’s responsibility for Ancel’s assault on Damen not really being dealt with, chiefly).

That said, I think it’s well written as a story, and Laurent is, in particular, a fantastically written character. One of the most complex and well-developed I’ve ever read, actually. (In Summer Palace, I don’t think Laurent is OOC. I think he’s healing.)

My favorite characters are:

  1. Aimeric
  2. Laurent
  3. Ancel
  4. Damen
  5. Nicaise

I have often considered “Aimeric lives” AUs and would absolutely want to read them if anyone has recs. No, I am not over his death. Yes, it’s well done. Yes, I still wanted him to live, dammit.

I am going to recommend you this meta by @aspoonofsugar, whom I begged to read it and then wrote this fantastic meta (as I knew Sugar-chan would!). They have a great take on Laurent as a whole, as well as his and Damen’s relationship (and his foils with other characters).

As for that person…

The idea that queer stories have to be wholesome is gross and queerphobic. Human beings are often not wholesome. Queer stories should be wholesome, sure. They should also be messy. They should be dark. They should be tragic, and they should be happily ever after. They should have all sorts of stories and all sorts of representation.

Now, you can have preferences for what kind of stories you prefer, but the idea that it’s morally wrong to like a story that isn’t your preference is so immature I don’t even have time to engage with that level of egocentrism.

And I do understand why Captive Prince isn’t for everyone. It does contain triggering content, and while it mostly frames it well, I do think it stumbles a bit with the Damen-Laurent-Ancel thing. However, that doesn’t erase its strengths for me. If someone doesn’t like it, that’s fine though.

Scene from Captive Prince
A small room in a tower. Laurent is sitting on a table in the front, he just put a goblet on the table. Two candlesticks, letters and wine pitcher are on the table. In the background , two soldiers hold a young man in their arms, who is screaming at Laurent. His cheek is red, because Laurent just hit him with the goblet. To the side is Damen who holds a visibly shocked Jord back from interfering in the situation. ALT

Hi! No apologies needed—it’s always good to hear that someone enjoyed reading my writing.

I do agree that it would’ve been interesting to keep Aimeric alive, and the premise you mentioned could definitely make a good fic. I think I’ve read one or two that are similar, though I can’t recall the titles at the moment.

Some of you know the Netflix series Outer Banks? I need to use a theory from that series on CaPri…

There, John B says:

“Denial’s underrated. You should try it sometime. It’s highly effective, and it’s only denial if you’re wrong.”

So, let’s try it…

-Is there a DNA-test that it was really Nicaise’s head who the herold brought? No!

-Is there proof that Aimeric not just faked his death? Did they look if he still had pulse? I think they just watched if he was breathing, right? He just hold his breath. (And if they did check his pulse, maybe he had an accomplice…)

As long as noone can proof me wrong, they’re alive. And wild theories of how they might have survived are welcome… I watched enough series to know everything is possible!!!

(I wish I could denie Augustes death as well, but if he was still alive he’d done everything to get back to Laurent, so unfortunatly, denial doesn’t work here because that’s proof to me)

I avoided rereading Capri for four years because of how much I sympathized with aimeric. It hurt too much to read prince’s gambit because I knew he would betray them, but idk, I think I stepped back and could finally look at his character more objectively, but also as simply a victim of circumstance

Hi! Welcome in and hope you enjoyed the fic :)

In my original draft, I actually had a bit of dialogue explaining what happened, but it was never really brought up after that one exchange and didn’t add much so I took it out.

Basically, the Regent happened.

(continued under the cut)

In this au, Laurent’s parents kept him and Auguste away from the regent, but Guion was still very much in the Regent’s pocket, including canon shitty father things (aka selling his own son out for some more social prestige and power).

When Aimeric and Laurent are 14, Guion sent Florian—the brother that serves as Aimeric’s emergency contact—to help the Regent fix a bug on his computer, since Florian was studying computer science at the time. While doing that, he found proof of the Regent’s actions, and what happened to Aimeric. He told his mother, Loyse and Guion had a fight wherein Guion reveals just how much of a useless waste-of-oxygen scumbag he is, and Loyse packsedthe kids up and leaves with little to no warning. The Regent was, unfortunately, powerful enough that they might not have won a court case against him, and she hadn’t wanted Aimeric to face that level of scrutiny. Aleron didn’t explain what happened to Laurent, though he suspected it. Hence why Aimeric vanished for seemingly no reason to Laurent.

The main reason Florian is Aimeric’s emergency contact is because he was the only one who knew, in detail, what had happened. That meant that Aimeric felt more comfortable putting him down compared to his other brothers (who have never been any good to him anyways) or his mother (who would probably be horrifically overprotective and therefore overwhelming if anything like this happened). He never told Jord what happened, and so Jord was out as an emergency contact. It was honestly a matter of bad timing—his brother is working outside of the country when all this goes down, and Aimeric never thought to change it because a) he’d been fine for a while before things fell apart with Jord and b) after things fell apart, he didn’t have the mental energy to call the hospital and fill out all the forms and do all the legwork, so he left it.

(Don’t worry—the Regent did get brought to court for this by a different survivor’s family eventually, and promptly died in prison after being sentenced. Fuck that guy.)

terminus ante quem - ace_assin9 - Captive Prince - C. S. Pacat [Archive of Our Own]

Summary:

Back then, Aimeric had sat with him, staunch in his refusal to leave Laurent to his misery. Two thirteen year olds, all gangly limbs and shadowed eyes, huddled into a couple of chairs in the corner with their hands clasped tight. Waiting.

Now Laurent has no one with him, and Aimeric is the one he’s waiting for.
