Matt Bruce oil painting ‘White Cliffs! In well over 50 years of prolific production in a range of media, his work had found favour in all corners of the world; in the UK alone his pictures had been exhibited at The Royal Academy, Royal West of England Academy, Royal Institute of Water Colour Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists, to name but a few such institutions. His work continues to feature in countless corporate collections both at home and abroad.
The son of a Scottish textile entrepreneur, he was educated at Dollar Academy, Clackmannanshire, from where he won an Andrew Grant Scholarship to the Edinburgh School of Art. There Matt graduated as a painter under the guidance of Bill Gillies, before training as a teacher at Moray House. During the war he served as a gunner in the 79th Highland Division of the Royal Artillery. His engrained passion for Scotland never diminished and it is fitting that his final landscapes stemmed from a visit there just two months before he passed away.
Matt’s revered teaching career commenced at Victoria College, Jersey, where he temporarily settled with his then new bride, Peggy, in 1945. From 1948 to 1972 he was head of the Art Department of Varndean Grammar School for Boys, Brighton; the town in which he was to spend the rest of his life. Peggy Bruce died in 1990. Their only son Gordon lives in South Bucks, where he runs his own public relations consultancy.
Even into his eighties, Matt regularly traveled the length and breadth of Europe, teaching and motivating generation upon generation of would-be painters. He is much missed by them and everybody else who knew this unique and ebullient character. CHALK CLIFFS, VAPOUR TRAILS & STRUCTURAL CONCRETE: a few things (plus the extraordinary light this morning) that made me think of the artists Paul Nash and Tacita Dean. Somehow these elements are resonant of both artists’ work. The quality of romantic nostalgia is there in spades in a closed-up seafront café in winter, like Nash’s views of Swanage, or Dean’s derelict bubble House. Blue skies, nothing but blue skies…at la Scala dei Turchi. La Scala dei Turchi, or Stairs of the Turks, are made of a hard-mud material that is a combination of calcium carbonate and lime mixed with other types of clay and silt, called marl or marlstone. Stone Bay is a beautiful sandy beach that is backed by a promenade lined with beach huts which leads into the coastal town of Broadstairs in Kent.
Behind the beach are high chalk cliffs which provide shelter from the breeze and a feeling of seclusion, casting a shadow over parts of the beach as the sun dips in the late afternoon.
Like Kingsgate Bay two posts back, the beach at Stone Bay almost disappears on the high tide, so be sure to check the tide times.
What I really liked about Stone Bay was how it was much quieter than Broadstair’s main beach, Viking Bay. Yet it also comes with plenty of facilities, contributing to its Blue Flag beach status.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:
Take a train from London Victoria station to Broadstairs with ‘Southeastern trains’. The promenade leads from the town and the main beach at Viking Bay to Stone Bay where there’s another trail that continues on to Botany Bay.
