Read the first 120 pages of Victoria (2016) by Daisy Goodwin and wow it really is the exact same as the first two episodes of the ITV series (2016-2019), to the point where I can’t figure out which came first or if she wrote both concurrently. The only difference is the series has more of the upstairs-downstairs plots, but the book doesn’t seem to be interested in the servants, and I suspect they were beefed up to follow the model of Downton Abbey.

thinking about how riley should have been mike newton, which is nothing new in this fandom but like. truly. not just because it would have had more impact to bella, but because his arc would fit mike so well????
mike’s always been charming and popular but also seemingly desperate for that attention/approval he couldn’t quite get. like, i believe mike would not be interested in bella if she actually liked him back. i think his interest in jessica is purely vain in the sense that he likes what her liking him means, for his image and self esteem. i don’t think mike is Evil like that loserboy eddie thinks lol but he’s definetely enamored with feeling special in some type of way (which is something pretty common from a teen).
and then pair that with victoria. her manipulation would feel so much crueler. we don’t know how mature riley was prior, but we know mike, how cheesy he is, and how cringe, and also how… naïve. and she’s an ancient predator, much like eddie is xd except she is actively grooming mike, she weaponizes him. he literally loses all that boyish familiarity and turns into a violent, lying monster. how much cruelerrr would it be for him to go up that mountain with the intent to kill bella just to please victoria; and how much crueler for him to die realising the person who made him special (a vampire) and believed him so, had just used him… discarded him. the fact victoria chose him specifically for all those things he tried so hard to get: his popularity, his charm—those things being the ones that end up condemning him in the end. being punished for having, really, such normal needs and wants—for being… human. duh. his life finished just like that, gone!
yeah, riley should have been mike newton. and mike should have been bella’s epiphany regarding vampirism/humanity—not bree.
