For more than six days, almost 90 million Iranians have been living under a total internet blackout. The shutdown comes after Iranians endured a similar total internet blackout at the beginning of January, followed by weeks of limited connectivity while the regime brutally attacked and killed thousands of anti-government protesters. But as the US and Israel’s war on Iran intensifies, the conflict…

You can not shiver a stick without striking an AI device at CES this year, with artificial smarts presently installed in nearly every wearable, display screen, and home appliance throughout the program flooring, and likewise the armed forces of AI friends, playthings, and robotics.
Nonetheless those are just the start. We have actually seen AI show up in much full unfamiliar person locations…

“The Descent” - Jeff Long
My entire life has been about trying.
Trying to make my mother happy
Trying to be the girl she wanted
Trying to hold myself together
Trying to put myself *back* together when I inevitably fell apart
Trying to keep a job
Trying not to be “too much”
Trying to find a family
Trying to trust that the cat is alive even though I can’t see it.
Trying to be a better man
Trying not to be alone
I’m too exhausted to keep trying. So what will happen to me now?

“You’re brooding.”
Elijah glanced up from his book to where Tatia sat at the vanity, brushing her hair. “What makes you say that, my love?”
“I spoke with Marcellus earlier. Apparently he’s gotten very close to memorizing Hamlet and he did well in his piano lesson.” Tatia worked at a stubborn tangle. “Yet you haven’t said a word about it since we retired. What’s on your mind?”
[[MORE]]Elijah sighed. “He has been doing well in his lessons. He always does well in his lessons. I wasn’t aware you expected a report from me.”
“I don’t expect a report; you practically gush about how clever and talented that boy is every day you receive a spare five minutes with him. Forgive me for being concerned at such an abrupt change in behavior.” She set her brush down and turned in her seat to met his gaze head on. “What’s troubling you? Did Klaus say something?”
“Why do you always assume Niklaus is at the bottom of every problem you find?”
Her eyes narrowed and she crossed her arms. “Well, now I know he had something to do with it, as he usually does.”
Elijah let out another sigh and set his book aside on the mattress beside him. “He didn’t say anything.”
“Not directly.”
“Tatia, darling, please.”
She huffed but gestured for him to continue.
“Thank you.” He shifted to sit on the edge of the bed, using the time to consider his next words. “Niklaus did not say anything about my…fondness for Marcellus. But ever since Kol was awakened, the boy has started to spend more time with me and Niklaus has…complained of his split attention.”
“And? What else can he expect when he treats the poor boy like a toy that can be abandoned and picked up again whenever he feels like it?”
“You know very well that is not how he sees it. He gets distracted at times, I will grant you that, but he loves that boy. Just the other day I saw him nearly behead Kol because he put Marcel’s life in danger. He acted purely for the benefit of that boy, something I haven’t seen him do since our human days.”
Tatia raised an eyebrow. “Or perhaps he felt slighted that Kol would dare endanger his new favorite pet.”
“Must you think so low of him?”
“Elijah….” She sighed. “Klaus is family and I love him. Perhaps I don’t love him as much as you, but sometimes I think that makes you too soft on him. You’re too blinded by the idea of what he could be to see what he is. No, I don’t think he is entirely selfish when it comes to Marcellus. He does care for the boy, I do not doubt that. But I do not believe he is entirely selfless either, nor do I think he’s suited to be his father, especially not with Kol’s influence.”
“Whether you think he’s suited or not is irrelevant.” Elijah stood and began to pace. “He desires to be the boy’s father, and I believe he is capable of it. Even you must admit, his attitude has improved dramatically since Marcellus was brought into our home.”
“I suppose you have a point. I still don’t see what this has to do with you contributing to his childhood.”
Elijah sighed. “As I said. There are times when Niklaus seems to be under the impression that Marcellus….prefers me.”
“And as I said-”
“Yes, yes, I more consistently make time for him so it’s natural that he’s drawn to me.” Elijah waved a hand at her. “But you know my brother does not see it that way.”
“Whether Klaus sees it that way or not is irrelevant.”
“I beg to differ.”
Tatia stood, securing her robe as she stepped in front of him, blocking his pacing. “Elijah. What are you planning to do?” Her tone was low, almost dangerous, as if she knew she would not like what she was about to hear.
Elijah sighed. “I am…considering the merits of encouraging Marcellus to spend more time with his father.”
“And how would you do that?”
He avoided her eyes. “I could simply tell him to, but Niklaus would learn of that and I don’t know how he would respond. It’s better if Marcellus chooses to do so on his own.”
“And? How do you intend to make that happen?”
His mouth was dry. For all that he was certain of his plans, he knew Tatia would not approve. “My current thought is to give Marcel the impression I no longer wish to spend time-”
“Absolutely not!” Her fists clenched at her side and she turned away from him.
“My love-”
“No! I will not hear any justification for such cruelty.”
He sighed and rested his hands on her shoulders. “Tatia, you know I have yearned for Niklaus’ redemption for centuries. I believe Marcellus may be the key. Already, he has been calmer, and started to care for those other than himself. I fear if the boy becomes too attached to me, my brother will relapse.”
Tatia sighed. She did not turn to him, but she did not refuse his touch. “I accept that you have taken Klaus’ redemption as your responsibility,” she said quietly, “but Marcellus did not ask for such a weight to be placed on his shoulders. He’s only a little boy; his only responsibility is to be loved.”
Elijah bent down and kissed the top of her head. “I know you are fond of him; he adores you in equal measure.”
He felt her shoulders relax. “He’s an utter delight,” she murmured. “He reminds me of my Erik….”
“I know.”
She leaned her head back against his shoulder, eyes closed. “I would never ask you to abandon your mission to redeem your brother,” she whispered. “I only ask that you don’t break that boy’s heart in the name of protecting Klaus’ ego.”
Elijah hugged her and kissed her forehead. “You have my word, my love.”
She hummed and opened her eyes to look at him. “I will hold you to that, minn bóndi.”
That night, Elijah pondered his options while Tatia slept peacefully. He would not break his promise to his wife, but he could not risk Niklaus’ further wrath over his time spent with Marcellus. There must be some way he could bring them closer together without abandoning the boy, some way he could set his brother back on the right path without making it obvious what he was doing.
When morning came, he still did not have an answer. By the time he heard Marcel’s light footsteps heading for his dressing room, he was considering going with his original plan with kinder words. Tatia could not be mad at him if he attempted to soften the blow, could she?
“Mister Elijah? I finished memorizing Hamlet!”
Elijah finished his tie and turned to face the boy. His eyes were alight with excitement and the playbook he held was bending in his tight grip. Elijah suppressed a smile. Marcellus should not be coming to him with these things; that should be reserved for Niklaus.
The words he’d been practicing last night were on the tip of his tongue. I’m not interested. Why don’t you go bother Klaus or Rebekah? I’m very busy, can’t you tell?
But those words paled in comparison to Tatia’s ringing in his mind.
Don’t break that boy’s heart in the name of Klaus’ ego.
“Have you now?” he said, hoping Marcel didn’t pick up on the extended silence. “You’ve only been at it for a few weeks.”
“Ma- Miss Tatia helped me.” Marcel rocked on his feet. “I would like to perform it for you, if you have time, sir.”
I don’t have time. Go bother someone else. “I would be delighted to hear you. Perhaps you could perform after dinner as well? I’m sure everyone would love to see your progress.”
Marcellus beamed. “Do you really think so?”
“I know so.” He allowed himself a smile. “And I am honored to be your first audience.”
Down the hall, he heard Niklaus pause, no doubt listening in. He tried to put his brother’s anger out of his mind as Marcel started.
He would let go, put some distance between him in the boy. Just not today.
