Michel Duchaussoy, Caroline Cellier, and Jean Yanne in This Man Must Die (1969), written and directed by Claude Chabrol.  This is Claude’s fourth entry on the New York Times list of the 1,000 Best Films, after Le Boucher, La Ceremonie and The Story of Women.

This Man Must Die (1969) is one of the New York Times 1,000 Best Films.

Tony Mastroianni wrote in the Cleveland Press “Director-writer Claude Chabrol endows his w o r k with an air of  ambiguity that sometimes enhances, sometimes hurts the movie. He works  up to the meat of his story too slowly, then rushes matters along at the  end. Long scenes of small talk are genuine to the point of being boring.   Psychological suspense movies are rare and this one is a fairly good  example of the type, good enough to overlook the flaws. “
