I am watching the slow green man sweep—it’s a performance.
Across the glittering mega-cities of the Inter-Continental Belt, residents are rediscovering the broom. Not the hand-powered domestic tool of the 20th century, but shimmering arrays of nanofibres, programmable in colour, sound, and scent. I hate the scent.
To sweep is to paint, to compose, to sculpt.
On Tuesday night in New Kyoto, thousands gathered to watch “Sweep away the past”, a choreographed performance in which fifty sweep-artists moved across a plaza, their brooms emitting trails of phosphorescent mist. What began as maintenance—the clearing of data-dust and pollutant motes—unfurled into a balletic display. The plaza was left spotless, but also newly patterned: spirals, visible only in ultraviolet, that will slowly dissolve back into the atmosphere over days.
“It’s not just cleaning,” explains cultural theorist Lian Arora. “It’s a way of negotiating with entropy. Our ancestors were dust, they left behind their toxic dust. We dance with it.”
Of course, there are complications. Early sweeping prototypes proved too efficient, whisking away not just detritus but skin flakes, eyelashes, even dental enamel. Whole neighbourhoods lost their teeth in a single afternoon. But such problems have been largely ironed out.
Today, sweeping, is intimate. Families gather on Sundays to sweep their communal squares together, laughing as their bristles hum in harmony. Children program their brooms to sing lullabies while they tidy. Lovers trade “sweep-codes,” leaving patterns for each other in the dust like secret graffiti.
If the 20th century vacuum was a symbol of domestic drudgery, the 33rd century broom has become a symbol of civic optimism. To sweep is to care for the shared ground. To sweep is to compose fleeting art.
