“I get mad these days,” Duke once said, “when I see our boys there getting killed and maimed, and people back home aren’t behind them.”
John Wayne didn’t just talk the talk — he put himself in harm’s way to stand behind our troops. In 1966, he traveled to the front lines of Vietnam, slogging through muck and monsoon rain to meet the men of the 502nd and 327th Infantry in Dak To, and on June 20, the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines at Chu Lai. A sniper narrowly missed him during the visit — a reminder that he didn’t seek comfort, but connection. “I never heard complaints—from privates up to generals,” he said after returning home.
One soldier he never met, however, would leave a lasting mark on his life: Captain Stephen P. Hanson of Burbank, CA. The Marine had sent a photo to his family captioned “Me as John Wayne,” just before his Sea Knight helicopter was shot down over Laos on June 3, 1967.
Duke wore Captain Hanson’s POW bracelet from that point on, and kept in touch with the family for years. In a letter to Hanson’s son, he wrote:
“I wish you a wonderful life. Just don’t expect too much out of it, and you’ll have some wonderful years. That’s my sermon from the mount this year, Todd. Give ’em hell.”
Hanson was later declared MIA, though propaganda photos suggested he may have been captured. Today, his name is etched on Panel 21E, Row 46 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. — a reminder of the sacrifice and the people Duke never forgot.

ALTIn a powerful show of unity and patriotism, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will lead a public rally in Chennai today, May 10, to express unwavering support for the Indian armed forces and denounce Pakistan’s recent acts of aggression and terrorism.
The rally, set to begin at 5 PM, will start from the DGP office and proceed to the War Memorial near the Island Grounds. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Stalin urged citizens to come together and stand by the nation’s brave defenders.
“Pakistan, which fosters terrorism, has brought misfortune upon itself and continues to violate international norms against India. This rally is our way of saying we stand firmly with our armed forces who are risking their lives to protect us,” Stalin said.
What makes this rally even more significant is the diverse participation it promises. From ex-servicemen and state ministers to students and members of the general public, the event is expected to be a strong visual representation of Tamil Nadu’s collective gratitude towards the Indian Army.
Stalin added, “Let all the people join us and demonstrate our unity and determination. This is the time to come together as one nation.”
This Chennai rally follows closely on the heels of a similar event in Bengaluru, where the Karnataka government held a “Unity March” on Friday morning to honour soldiers involved in Operation Sindoor. Led by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and attended by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and senior ministers, the march was a heartfelt tribute to the country’s defence forces.
With rising tensions and continuous provocations from across the border, these rallies serve as a timely reminder that the spirit of patriotism is alive and well in the hearts of Indians. As the country stands at a critical juncture, public demonstrations like these send a strong message: India stands united behind its soldiers.
