A SummerSlam rematch is part of the lineup for the Friday, September 12 WWE SmackDown.
As announced during this week’s episode, WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton will defend her title against Jade Cargill on next Friday’s SmackDown. Stratton defeated Cargill on night one of SummerSlam to retain the title.
Also set for next week’s show, Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre will go one-on-one. That…
A third John Cena appearance here, and the first AJ Styles match on the playlist. I know for a fact I watched this Summerslam live, but all I really remember is Finn Balor hurting his shoulder. The euphoria I felt the next week in that fatal four way match when my favorite wrestler at the time Kevin Owens won the Universal Title was unlike anything, really. But this isn’t about Kevin Owens (yet), this is about Styles and Cena.
[[MORE]]A collar-and-elbow to start lasts a while as Cena and Styles jockey for position. Styles gets a waistlock and Cena frees the grip to almost get a wristlock, but Styles slips through. Another lock up ends in Styles with a headlock and Cena gets it loose only for Styles to avoid any offense coming his way. He snaps at Cena saying Cena can’t stop him. They pause and bask in the cheers of the fans. The usual high-pitched voices of children rooting for their superhero Cena, contrasted by the deeper voices of adults rooting for AJ. Styles on the turnbuckle celebrates after a nice dropkick and taunts to the crowd. He steps down into a punch in the face from Cena, lol. Cena’s in control now, telling Styles there’s no more smiles, it’s time to be serious. The Barclays Center is chanting Cena sucks at every chance they get. Cena gets AJ in a fireman’s carry on the apron but Styles wiggles out and suplexes him onto the apron. Mauro Ranallo is on the call for this, by the way. And thank god because his broadcast partners are John Bradshaw Layfield and David Otunga. Not good. They emphasize that this is the hardest part of the ring like three times, come on now. We get it. But Mauro is phenomenal (no pun intended).
ALTThe two go back into the ring and Styles Irish whips Cena, but it’s reversed. Cena hoists Styles up for a HUGE back body drop. Insane height on this. A cover only gets one. Styles hits the ropes after he weasels out of a side headlock but is caught by a dropkick from Cena. Where did that come from? Cena maintains control until they come to trade blows. Styles’ forearms overwhelm Cena. After Styles pushes him into the corner, he hits the ropes but is caught by shoulder bumps into a Five Knuckle Shuffle. Styles lands on his feet from an Attitude Adjustment and rocks Cena with a Pele Kick. He hits a Styles Clash but is just the tiniest bit slow to roll Cena over for the pin. Cena kicks at two. Styles rises to his feet and prepares for the next move, but Cena springs up and surprises him with an AA. Only two. Their big hits are coming early, but it’s not enough to finish either of them off. Cena looking for an avalanche AA (his pretty much guaranteed win move), but Styles wiggles out of it. With Cena still up top, he puts Cena on his shoulders face-up for a Torture Rack into a spinout powerbomb. Styles is trying to one-up Cena at every turn. If you go for a hold, I’ve got a hold that’s better. If you go for power move, I’ll lift you up and show you something that’ll hurt even more.
ALTThe spinout powerbomb only gets two. Styles goes for another Styles Clash but Cena sweeps his legs and catapults him into the corner. Cena lifts styles horizontally and swings him into a cutter. Where are all these moves coming from? Another AA attempt leads to a rollup. Cena kicks out and Styles tries to forearm him while he’s still seated, but Cena gets a drop toehold looking for an STF. AJ kicks him off. He lifts him into a fireman’s carry and hits an Ushigoroshi for two. JBL mistakes this for an Attitude Adjustment. I wish he’d stop talking. A springboard 450 splash from AJ fails to connect. As Styles reels from the hard landing, Cena hits a Code Red??? No, seriously, where are these moves coming from?! Styles reverses an AA into a German suplex and loops that into a facebuster. Styles lines Cena up for a Phenomenal Forearm (not sure if it was called that at this point, but that’s what it is) and Cena catches his leg as he comes down. He uses this to pull him into an STF. Styles slips out and turns it into a crossface. Cena powers him up while in the crossface for an AA, but Styles falls to the ground and rolls Cena into a Calf Crusher. Again, another one up from Styles. You use your finisher, I’m gonna use mine.
ALTCena crawls towards the nearest rope but Styles shifts their position to avoid it. Cena gets onto all fours while still in the hold and somersaults to flip AJ into another STF. Styles breaks Cena’s grip and twists him into a rollup with their legs still hooked. Kickout. Styles enzuigiris Cena into the corner but catches an elbow to the face, dazing him. Cena uses this to hit a tornado DDT from the second rope. The Phenomenal One has this guy doing moves I don’t think Cena knew he could even do. Top rope leg drop only gets a two for Cena. Again, Cena tries an avalanche AA but Styles elbows his way out of it. AJ slings himself into a top rope frankensteiner from the apron. Phenomenal Forearm connects but Cena kicks. God, this has just been big hit after big hit.
ALTCena almost lifts Styles into another AA, but elbows to the jaw stop him. Styles hits the ropes and Cena takes his head off with a clothesline. He drags him to the ropes for what feels like the tenth attempt at an avalanche AA. Styles is still wise to this and elbows him in the jaw to stop it. Cena falters and starts to sit on the turnbuckle. But somehow, he powers through the elbows and finally hits an avalanche Attitude Adjustment. 1…2…
ALT
ALTSTYLES KICKS OUT!!! Cena looks extremely worn and exhausted. I wonder if this is the first time anybody’s ever kicked out of an avalanche AA. I know it isn’t the last. “Conjoined twins close!” What a call from Mauro Ranallo. As Styles crawls to his feet needing to use the ropes as support, Cena has this look of utter disbelief that Styles is even moving. Surprisingly good call from JBL, he points out that the frustration Cena is showing is the same frustration that everyone else who has ever faced Cena has felt. He muscles Styles up looking for a final AA, but Styles jumps out and swiftly hits him with a Styles Clash. He’s not done though. Styles rolls to the apron, throwing his right elbow pad to the wayside. A Phenomenal Forearm with no elbow padding is finally enough to end the match.
ALTA proverbial slugfest of epic proportion. Finisher after finisher after finisher for twenty minutes. Cena’s at his best when he decides to break routine. Half of the moves he used in this one I’ve never seen him do. Styles is so special, man. He beat John Cena one-on-one clean, he’s just that good. How do you not put every championship ever on this guy. He wins the WWE title later this year, to be fair. This might be Cena’s best match that I’ve ever seen.
