Time flies when you're having fun!

It sounds crazy, but my first semester of college is more than halfway over! It’s been a whirlwind of learning, working, making friends, and having fun. Some of my favorite things have been my weekly environmental studies lab, my freshman year seminar (food, people, and the planet), joining the Student Events Board (SEB) and working events, and hanging out with my friends.

This past Saturday was Shoremal, the big SEB event of the fall semester. Short for “Shoreman Formal”, alumni and current students flocked to this highly anticipated party held under a white tent on Kent Lawn. It was such a unique experience for me because: it was my first ever Shoremal, I was able to go to the dance and have fun, but I also got the opportunity to set up the event and work a shift checking students in. It was fun to be on the “staff” side of the event for a little while. Student Events board is definitely one of my favorite things that I do here at WAC!

Campus Invited to Participate in Post-Election Events

After a polarizing election season, campus groups are collaborating to recognize concerns that have been expressed. This week, various departments are creating community gathering spaces, conversation spaces, relaxation spaces and events (PDF) open to the campus community. The list of spaces and events is accessible from the Dean of Students homepage and is being updated whenever new events are created or when missing locations, times and descriptions for items already on the list become available.

Student Conferences

What do you imagine when you think of the word “design”?

Furniture, architecture, or computer graphics?

How about climate change, invention, or medicine? These are the many facets that Guiness World Record holders, Nobel Peace Prize winners, and contemporary artists talked about this past weekend at the annual Design Our Tomorrow (DOT) Conference 2011.

The conference was held at the beautiful Convocation Hall at University of Toronto’s downtown campus, and it was filled with students, young professionals, journalists, Nobel Peace Prize winners, seasoned professors, optimists – and a few pessimists. All were bright-eyed and excited for the speakers ahead.

The conference began with a performance by violin virtuoso, Yi-Ting Chen, and featured some incredible thinkers and dream makers. The audience was treated to new scientific discoveries, an original music score on the world’s first water instrument (the hydraulophone), and inspirational speakers – all in the span of 6 hours!

If you’re in a rut, or you’re down in the dumps about school, work, and life in general, I highly recommend finding a student conference near you. Here are my top 3 reasons to be a conference delegate:

  1. Be inspired
I came away with this conference with a renewed sense of determination and courage. It’s really refreshing to hear about a non-athlete who set the World Record for farthest distance traveled by his own power in a single day. It’s also remarkable the kinds of technologies being developed to aid the elderly to stay connected with loved ones.
  2. Meet new people
This conference was held in downtown Toronto, but a lot of students from surrounding cities made the trip. At conferences you can meet people from different schools and interact with professors too! All of the speakers were available afterwards in the atrium and were eager to interact with the audience.
  3. Learn
Design Our Tomorrow was a conference for youth who wanted to make a difference - from PhD computer science students, to undergraduate interior design, the speakers and the audience represented a broad array of studies. I learned a lot about design and aethestics that I wouldn’t have known otherwise!

Entrepreneurs road trip!

The last few days were very great. Jonathan (CEO of studentevents.com) ex-partner of Nir came for a few days to visit us in Copenhagen. He worked from StartupBootCamp offices and was a great add to our lonely life that we had after working hours (most of the time it’s shower and straight to bed).

We decided that it’s time to take a day off for visiting Malmo (only 20 minutes by train). We add a great time with Jonathan, his camera and Binoculars (a story of it’s own).

I forgot to say that he took his IPad back! Now we see News with our IPhones L

 Now, back to work!

70 new events + what are you psyched about?

It’s the last week of September already, and I can’t believe how fast this month went by! StudentEvents has been busy finding and posting all kinds of events now that school has started up again – 70 new events just posted last week! There’s no time like the present to get involved in something new. In celebration of trying new things, becoming a better person, and the seasons changing, we want to know:

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Is it that you’ve finally found a program that suits you? Did you get into all the classes you wanted? Or are you taking some rad electives like postmodern literature or Astrophysics 101? If you’re in first year, how much do you love campus now that you don’t have to ask 10 different seniors how to find the math building? Is cafeteria food all it’s amped up to be (well, maybe not amped up…)?

Reply with a photo or message with what you are MOST psyched about this year!!
