OAS/S-NEST: A Sensory Beach Installation Bridging Light, Motion, and Material

OAS/S-NEST: A Sensory Beach Installation Bridging Light, Motion, and Material

A Return to Light, Movement, and Collective Memory

During the 2025 Anaya Drama Festival, a sculptural installation titled OAS/S-NEST emerged as a poetic and architectural statement. Positioned on the beach like a futuristic nest, the piece embodied the themes of return, origin, and coexistence between humans, nature, and light. It wasn’t merely a structure—it was a space for presence, reflection, and collective emotion.

From “Migratory Birds” to a Theatrical Nest

This project was part of the Migratory Bird 300 initiative, which brings together 300 creators each year to live, work, and create collaboratively over 300 hours. OAS/S-NEST served as the temporary stage for this year’s gathering, embodying the core values of sustainability, redefinition, and coexistence through an ephemeral public installation.

The upper structure evokes a bird in flight, with a glowing core suspended in open air

A Visual Metaphor of Flight and Grounding

The installation is composed of two distinct yet interconnected parts—each representing the festival’s core duality: emotion and reason.

The reflective surfaces, shifting natural light, and open configuration make the viewer an active part of the space. By day, the structure reflects the sky and sea. By night, the central sphere glows softly, creating an immersive theatrical atmosphere.

The “Drama Eye” Watches Over the Stage

Viewed from above, the composition transforms into what the designers call the Drama Eye. The white curves and glowing core create a symbolic eye in the center of the space, quietly watching the beach, the crowd, and the performance itself. It becomes a silent observer, echoing the relationship between the artist, the audience, and the work itself.
Reflected mirrored blocks embedded in beach sand capturing sky and crowd activity
The reflective base forms the sculptural “nest,” integrating its surroundings into the artwork.

A Living Dialogue with Time and Nature

The use of mirrored surfaces isn’t merely aesthetic. It encourages a sensory dialogue with the environment. As the sky, waves, and people shift, so does the installation. It breathes with the landscape. Viewers don’t just look at it—they live with it. The project becomes a respirator for light, movement, and time.

Collaboration and Architectural Precision

OAS/S-NEST was designed by ZHIDE ARCHITECTS, led by Li Zhengdong and Bai Rubing, and realized in collaboration with Beijing Haiya Building Decoration Engineering Co., Ltd. Dozens of photographers and artists documented and supported the creative process, resulting in a structure that was both emotionally charged and architecturally precise.

A Nest that Echoes the Human Condition

More than a piece of stage architecture, OAS/S-NEST is a sensory framework. It asks viewers to feel, observe, and exist within a moment that’s both fleeting and meaningful. The project blurs the boundary between performance and space turning the audience into participants and the structure into a living actor.

✦ ArchUp Editorial Insight

This article presents the OAS/S-NEST installation as a sensorial platform blending architectural expression with environmental immersion. The images showcase a striking configuration of floating white wings encircling a luminous sphere, while mirrored bases reflect shifting skies and human movement, enhancing the spatial dynamism. However, despite its symbolic strength, the text lacks deeper contextual grounding or long-term environmental analysis. Can this piece transcend its temporary role to become a sustained design reference? Still, the use of natural light and layered interactivity strengthens its contemplative value and positions it as a meaningful model for ephemeral spatial strategies.

> You could argue that note taking is essentially single-player collaboration where you communicate with your future self

Really enjoyed this metaphor and the ideas highlighted here are definitely something I’d be interested in explorierst more.
