Eric Benet - True To Myself
In every genre of music, there are artists that get really popular, but there are also artists that are the unsung heroes of the genre, basically never getting their flowers throughout their initial career. One of those artists, at least for me, is neo-soul / R&B singer Eric Benet. I remember picking up his 1999 self-titled album at FYE many years ago, and really liking it, but I kind of forgot about it. I just picked up his 1996 debut album, True To Myself, and I can say the same thing about that album. I like it a lot, but I keep forgetting about it. That isn’t his fault, or the album’s fault, but it comes down to a few things — the sound and the length, both of which I’ll talk about shortly. It also comes down to having a lot of other stuff that I’m currently into, so I haven’t listened to it as much as I’d like to.
Eric Benet was a rising star in the R&B and burgeoning neo-soul scene of the late 90s and early 00s, but he never got the same level of success as Maxwell or D’Angelo. That isn’t to say his music wasn’t good, but he didn’t really do anything that those two artists were not already doing. His brand of neo-soul was pretty typical of the time, but he did throw in a slight funk influence, and that’s actually showcased here with a cover of Sly & The Family Stone’s “If You Want Me To Stay.” The album is pretty groovy and vibey, however, and I said that same thing with the first two India.Arie albums, because her music is the same way. It has a more acoustic sound to it, but this is more or less a quiet storm, R&B, and neo-soul that isn’t super energetic or catchy.
Instead it’s smooth, groovy, and vibey, but it’s good. His voice is the real star of the album, and there is a good variety of sounds, too, but it all comes together under the neo-soul banner. The main reasons why I haven’t been coming back to this as much as I want to, like I said, are for the sound and length. The sound isn’t super catchy or energetic, and it doesn’t lend itself to really immediate and catchy hooks, but the album is also an hour long. Hearing a very similar sound that long can be a lot, but it isn’t that anything is bad, it’s that it’s just kind of slow and groovy. His voice is utterly amazing, but this is the type of neo-soul that’s more about a mood than a hook. An hour is a pretty long time, and it wears on me by the end but I do like this a lot, and it’s worth hearing if you like neo-soul. The lyrics are pretty solid, the grooves are tasty, and the vocals are fantastic.
