A valuable first attempt at a double concertina. The book can be folded down with one concertina inside the other.
contrast of half tone of the figural & text aspects of screen print with gestural marks of monotype
The text of the monotype invites effort to construct comprehensible language.
There would be the posibility of colouring white edges.
The ink used needs to be given more consideration given that even after a week the dark blue of these monotypes was still rubbing of on my fingers and the cutting surface whilst making the concertina
Issues around the relative sizes of the paper & images of the respective concertinas. Also the length of each concertina which directly relates to the relative size of the folds of each concertina. It’s necessary to give thought to how many folds of the inner concertina compared to the outer one.
My current thinking is there need to be more (& narrower) folds to the inner concertina. This implies a longer piece of paper or work than the outer concertina.
I tried several shorter pieces for the inner concertina but the there’s an issue of (whether to make a) join. Also while the first part of the inner concertina worked in relation to the outer one this was less the case with the second part. Also the ‘back’ was less successful than the front (pictured above).
I think it would help to start with an outer piece of paper one half the length of the inner concertina. Or perhaps there would have to be a slight additional length if joins were to be necessary? That would allow two folds for each fold of the outer concertina. But what about the ends (or covers when the book is folded)?
