– mon cheminement
– le choix des matériaux tressés et éthologiques
– des conseils d’entretien concrets

“In this age where there is an abundance of things, maybe it’s not really my job to make parasols or start up the love brand Coci la elle. I’m not particularly good at drawing, and I can’t produce like a big company. But I’m happy that there are people who enjoy using the things I make.”

Parasol artist Higashi Chika designs each and every one of her parasols herself, painting them and finishing them with embroidery. Even the handles and other parts are all handmade by artisans, making each one unique. Her parasols, with their fantastical colors and shapes used freely without being bound by preconceived notions, are just like the young girl Lee. However, Higashi never compromises on the practicality of her parasols.

Accessories that will make your heart flutter

“A parasol is not an absolute necessity in life, but if someone comes across a parasol I’ve made and thinks, ‘How cute!’, it can become a part of life. The unique sentiment of the scene of someone using a parasol is one of the things that is important to me, and it also has a practical side, protecting you from the strong sunlight. Even on a hot, scorching midsummer day, if you have a cute parasol with you, you’ll want to take a walk in the river, right? A customer from Uganda brought one back to her home country because it was cool.

I have been there before and it really is cool, and I felt like I had made a new discovery.

Higashi says that until he started making parasols, nothing he did worked. When he couldn’t find a parasol that he liked and made one that he wanted, he thought, "I thought that if I made what I loved, through making parasols, I might be able to connect with society.” Parasols became Higashi’s point of contact with society.

“The number of parasol craftsmen in Japan is rapidly decreasing. It’s really sad to see such wonderful things being lost. It may be a trend that I can’t stop on my own, but I will absorb the wonderful techniques of the craftsmen and make them myself,” he says, expressing his unique nuance in these words. “I would like to continue making things for others, filled with the maker’s thoughts.”

From under the parasol she made for herself, her thoughts spread to the people around her and to the world. It’s like watching a girl transform into a woman.

The parasols will be on display and for sale at “Souvenirs from Tokyo” on the first basement floor of the National Art Center, Tokyo from June 8th to August 8th. You can look forward to a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with these beautiful and strong parasols.
