PS4/PS5: The Luac0re Situation Explained

New to jailbreaking? Read THIS first!

Developer Gezine has finished and released his much anticipated his userland exploit Luac0re.

This userland was created and forked from Mast1core to get the notoriously hard to implement kernel Poopsploit to work on the PS5 so that firmwares 10.20 - 12.00 could be jailbroken.

He succeeded and then some!

Just as Mast1core we can do some interesting stuff with it on non-jailbreable firmwares (like on current latest firmware 12.70)

“Native homebrew” and “backup games” are the possibilities.

Lets break that down.
Native Homebrew is likely referring to John Törnblom’s homebrew apps which can be ran without EtaHEN. These homebrew apps include ftp server and emulators for a bunch of consoles.
This’ll no doubt lead to further developments of apps.
One im personally hopefull for is a dumper payload that allows us to get access to game files from latest firmware which we then can backport.

Game backups is the big one and the most “might” one ive ever seen.
This is literal piracy of PS5 games on latest firmware which Sony won’t allow at all and thus can bring trouble to the scene.
The coming period is gonna be really interesting to see what is possible here.

Now to use this exploit to jailbreak you NEED a physical copy of the game and a working disc drive while being on 12.00 or lower

Sadly the game was already a bit rare and this news has scalpers out in force which shot up the prices by ALOT

Updating to latest to get the game digitally is NOT THE SOLUTION
Instead wait for further developments or sell your PS5 and get one on 10.01 or lower to jailbreak with Y2JB (free).

So everything summarized in lil FAQ:

I’m on PS4 13.04 or PS5 12.70. Should I buy this game digitally?
Yes. You should. Get the normal version. NOT the PS Plus version. For PS5 Slim/Pro digital users: buy a disc drive and activate right away before 13.00 drops if you haven’t have one already.

What is needed to jailbreak my PS5 with this?
Two things:
- A PS5 disc edition (Digital is screwed unless you had the game already) on 12.00 or lower
- The Star Wars Racer Revenge game disc or the digital version

I’m on latest firmware what should i do?
Buy the game digitally. Do NOT get the PS Plus version. Its not a permanent license so you will lose it and the game gets locked.
Further then that go into system settings and disable everything related to updates.
To be extra sure that Sony wont remove the game from your account just disconnect internet on your PS5.

What can I do with this on latest firmware?
For now not much. The exploit is still in early phase. Currently you can only run these Test Payloads

I’m on a firmware between 10.20 and 12.60. Should i update to 12.70?
10.20 - 12.00: DO NOT UPDATE. YOU HAVE JAILBREAK ALREADY
12.01 - 12.40: DO NOT UPDATE. YOU HAVE Y2JB
12.60: Its up to you if you want to update to 12.70.
Since the jump is that small and the gains may be greater then waiting for a jailbreak it could be worth it.
If you don’t have an activated disc drive on 12.60 then yes an update to 12.70 is needed to pair it and you WILL need it for a future jailbreak.

Can other games be used for this exploit like Fahrenheit?
Sadly no, the dev looked at all of them and they miss the requirements for it to work. Star Wars Racer Revenge is the sole game compatible.

What about the other way around. Can the SWRR game be used for Mast1core?
Yes it can!

The exploit is called “Lua"c0re. Does that mean the LUA games like Hamadachi Creative work with it?
Nope, LUA is a completely different exploit that just happened to use the same codinglanguage

What does all this mean for PS4?
For jailbreaking? Nothing.
It just adds an extra userland to the list of userlands the PS4 already has.
PS4 already has the ultimate userland called Vue which doesnt require an expensive game like luac0re. Its a free app.

The native homebrew and game backups part could however be game changing for non-jailbreakable firmwares like the current 13.02 and 13.04. Its too early to tell yet.

Can Sony patch this?
Possibly and if the game backup thing is real then for sure but if you stay offline and have the game they can’t do anything to you!

Can Sony ban my PSN account over this?
Nope

I think this game is beautiful. I imagine it looking even better on the Series X or PS5. Probably most integral to any airborne shooter is the controls; they are perfect!

Revisiting Red Dead Redemption Has Been A Delight:

Hard to believe it’s been near fifteen years since Red Dead Redemption released. I haven’t played it personally since a couple years after it came out. Back when I had the kind of near infinite free time that would allow me to just drop into an already played large open world game like it was nothing. That said, while I’m at least a couple years late, I’ve been putting some time into the recent PC Port re-release and it’s happily shown me a game thats aged very well, and memories that are more than worth revisiting.

I vividly remember the lead-up to Red Dead Redemption, for me, it was monumental. Rockstar by this point had cemented their place in gamings pantheon as a top tier developer, and this was years before GTAV would cement them as damn near literal kings of the industry. To hear them announce that their next game following GTA4, itself a huge hit and impressive game, was a revisit to the Red Dead series with the stylings of GTA set in an old west open world was astounding. It was especially strange to hear the name “Red Dead” at all, Rockstar had published the original game, rescued from cancellation after a backing out from Capcom, in 2004, but Red Dead Revolver by this point had felt largely left behind and forgotten about by most of the gaming community.

So imagine my surprise at the announcement, as a fan of westerns, then triple that when the game itself came out and was fantastic. Add on a little extra surprise over the last few days when I’ve booted it up and found the game has held up really well! It does honestly take a little bit of playing to un-train you brain from some of the more intricate details Rockstar would later add into Red Dead Redemption 2. There’s no detailed horse care, no way of interacting with every NPC in the game world, and the general level of detail is far more simplistic. The game has less points of friction in its entire game than RDR2 has in casually riding across the game map (which to be clear, was something I loved).

The game world itself so far has held up stunningly well. Environments, though far simpler with the processing power that was available in the 7th gen of consoles, still look great. The deliberate choice to present most of the game as dusty, trodden desert with breaks of grasslands and sparse woods (at least in the early stages) may have been done out of technical necessity, but it was done wonderfully. I still wonder if the intense focus on the natural world and having the towns be little bigger than a street, or small ranch, stemmed as a response to GTA4 having such a dense urban sprawl at the sacrifice of San Andreas’ countryside areas, but if that is the case then it getting us two great franchises instead of just the one was well worth it.

I’m still very early into RDR, and I look forward to more doses of good memories attached to this game. I especially can’t wait to see if Tall Tree’s holds up as well as it does in my head. I’m mostly just happy to be back in the world of Red Dead, and to revisit such big game for me that I’ve not replayed for far longer than I thought. (I also remember this game starting slower but hey, video game pacing was different back then that’s for sure.)
