Doctor Who EU Recommendations-Past Doctor Adventures (PDAs)
So, looks like we’re in for another possible long wait before another new era of Doctor Who-been there, done that, many of us have been here before but many have not. After that deeply flawed, mixed bag at best of a finale to Ncuti Gatwa’s ultimately truncated era (I’ll write my thoughts in another post), I’ve seen a number of people wanting to dive into the old expanded universe for more Who content (and might do so myself at some point.)
I have never been a big fan of the audios-no offense to Big Finish fans or the people behind the audios, I can’t focus or listen well for that long, I’m sure they’re great-but I have owned and read a good many of the books. While I’d love to get back to my thorough review series of the books, that’ll take a long while to manage so I figured I’d write up a couple of quick lists for those interested in checking out the series.
For the record-some of the books haven’t aged well at all, others were quite formative to New Who, some are essential plot arc-wise but maybe not so good, some are amazing one-offs. The books are much like the TV series in how it varies in quality & I might enjoy something that another does not. These are just recommendations, that’s all.
So, this post is not gonna be as detailed as the others were as while I own a number of Past Doctor Adventures, I have far fewer than the other two series and have thus read less than half of them. That being said, I have read a fairly decent amount and read reviews/snippets/heard things about others so I’ll post what little I know. I will not be doing a post for the Missing Adventures as while I own well over half that series, I have not gotten around to reading most of it (only a handful at best). One of these days I mean to do a straight read-through.
Thanks again to everyone for liking and reblogging these, I had a larger number of responses than expected & some great replies from other Who book enthusiasts, hope these lists are helping those who know little about the book series (also apologies if there was confusion with the EDA post as I accidentally copied the VNA post title & added it to that one, didn’t notice until after a few others reblogged it)
Anyway, here’s the PDA recommendation list below the read-more, as always spoilers follow so caution:
PDAS I LOVE/ESSENTIAL:
Eye of Heaven-Jim Mortimore (4th Doctor & Leela; set between Talons of Weng-Chiang & Horror of Fang Rock; primarily Leela-centric, set on Easter Island where the moai statues are found to have been influenced by alien wormhole devices. One of Mortimore’s best books, a good Who book & one of my favorites from when I was a teenager)
The Witch Hunters-Steve Lyons (1st Doctor, Ian, Barbara & Susan; set between Reign of Terror and Planet of Giants; a historical set in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 during the infamous witch trials; don’t own the book and only read it the once years ago but this was an excellent Hartnell historical from what I recall, one of Lyons’ best books)
Dreams of Empire-Justin Richards (2nd Doctor, Jamie and Victoria; set between The Ice Warriors and The Enemy of The World. The future Haddron Republic has recently suffered a civil war due to its Consul General Hans Kesar declaring himself Consul General for life; after the war, he has been imprisoned in a bleak castle built on a desolate and distant asteroid named Santespri. 2, Jamie & Victoria land in the asteroid fortress when the current consul general comes to visit & assassination attempts occur as well as lots of talk about chess. One of my favorite PDAs, a must-read)
The Infinity Doctors-Lance Parkin (featuring an unspecified incarnation of The Doctor, may be alternate, may be future or past, we’re uncertain; written as the 35th Anniversary Book, featuring an unknown Doctor living on Gallifrey alongside The Master as his friend (known here as The Magistrate), dealing with attempts to end the Sontaran-Rutan War as well as far-future plots involving Omega, a massive superstructure from the end of time called The Needle & various aspects of novels Parkin meant to write with Kate Orman before they fell through. Might take place after The Gallifrey Chronicles and therefore before New Who. This is a strange curate’s egg of a novel that is outside of all known Who continuity but is nonetheless an interesting read (and essential for references in many other books by Parkin and Orman in the EDAs)
Festival of Death-Jonathan Morris (4th Doctor, Romana II and K-9, set between Shada and The Leisure Hive; An incredible homage to Adams-era Who, witty and non-linear and dark. Set in the G-Lock stuck in a hyperspace tunnel between two planets, where an attraction called The Beautiful Death promises a chance to experience the afterlife via temporary death and then resurrection-of course, things go horribly wrong with the 4th Doctor & Romana being out of phase with the main story timeline. A must-read, possibly the best PDA. My copy went missing, need a new one)
The Shadow In The Glass-Justin Richards & Stephen Cole (6th Doctor & Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart; 6 & The Brigadier team up to deal with the psychic gargoyle-like Vvormak as well as a Nazi cult that may have secrets from Hitler’s bunker hidden away in an Antarctic base. Written in barely over a month as a last-minute replacement, an excellent book despite its somewhat silly premise)
Relative Dementias-Mark Michalowski (7th Doctor & Ace; Set Between Battlefield and Ghost Light; The Doctor & Ace investigate a nursing home for Alzhiemer’s patients in early 1980’s Scotland; an unusual and really good first novel, one of the best 7th Doctor books in the PDA range)
The Algebra of Ice-Lloyd Rose (7th Doctor & Ace, set between Season 26 & Timewyrm: Revelation from the VNAs; Strange crop circles full of ice lead 7, Ace and UNIT into dealing with aliens from another dimension made of pure mathematics. A weird and excellent novel as one would expect of Rose, an homage to the early VNAs)
PDAS I LIKED/ESSENTIAL:
Mission: Impractical-David McIntee (6th Doctor, Frobisher, Sabalom Glitz & Dibber, The Ogrons; set in that massive gap between Trial of a Time Lord and Time and The Rani, a heist novel bringing in Frobisher from the comics, revealing the fate of Glitz’s partner Dibber between Trial and Dragonfire, full of continuity references & fanwank, this is a fun book IMO; I once owned it but lost my copy during one of my moves cross-country back in the 2000s)
Zeta Major-Simon Messingham (5th Doctor, Tegan and Nyssa; set between Arc of Infinity and Snakedance, a sequel to the 4th Doctor story Planet of Evil; by far Messingham’s best Who novel, a sequel to a story I love which was also my first classic Who story so I might be a bit biased; The Doctor makes a glib comment at the end of Planet of Evil about the Morestrans using the kinetic energy of planetary motion to solve their energy crisis & this story is set centuries later when the Morestrans have a massive Empire & Church caught in civil war over a massive Energy Tower based on The Doctor’s words.)
Storm Harvest-Mike Tucker & Robert Perry (7th Doctor & Ace, set after Matrix in Tucker & Perry’s Season 27/28 continuation; 7 & Ace visit the beautiful ocean resort world of Coralee for a relaxing holiday only for the planet to be besieged by the fierce aquatic beings known as The Krill. Features talking dolphins walking around in exoskeletons. Likely would’ve worked better as a script but is a fun book with 7 & Ace being rather well-written-Mike Tucker was the special effects guy on the show at the time so this makes sense)
The Final Sanction-Steve Lyons (2nd Doctor, Jamie and Zoe; set between The Seeds of Death and The Space Pirates; The 2nd Doctor crew encounter the shark-like Selachians from The Murder Game again, this time in the year 2204 where they’re at war with humanity, who’re about to unleash the horrifying gravity bombs for the first time. A solid story about the horrors of war.)
Corpse Marker-Chris Boucher (4th Doctor & Leela, a sequel to The Robots of Death, set between Last Man Running & Talons of Weng-Chiang; a fun, solid story expanding the world & background of Boucher’s excellent first Who serial, also weirdly a crossover with Blake’s 7. I like this one a lot even if its flawed.)
Tomb of Valdemar-Simon Messingham (4th Doctor, Romana I and K-9, set between The Ribos Operation and The Pirate Planet. The Doctor and co. investigate the legendary tomb of an ancient and deadly Old One from the Higher Dimensions on the sulphurous planet Ashkellia. One of Messingham’s better books if a bit dull at times, I love a good evil from the dawn of time story & The Key To Time era so it goes here for me.
Grave Matter-Justin Richards (6th Doctor & Peri, set between Vengeance on Varos and Mark Of The Rani; in the isolated Dorsill Islands off the coast of Britain where the locals choose to continue living in a pre-Industrial state, 6 & Peri encounter reanimated corpses and a mystery involving a space probe and a mysterious millionaire. A good solid story for 6.)
Prime Time-Mike Tucker (7th Doctor, Ace, The Master; set after the book Storm Harvest in the PDA version of Season 27/28; A scathing satire of the BBC, 80’s Who production, Hollywood and TV/media in general, featuring The Master post-Cheetah Planet, continuity references galore and grotesque aliens called The Fleshsmiths. I enjoy this novel even if some don’t. Notable in Ace’s real name being Dorothy Gale as a Wizard of Oz shoutout, seemingly contradicting VNAs; she’d later be fully named Dorothy Gale McShane (which New Who still hasn’t canonized from what I recall of Power of The Doctor))
Drift-Simon A. Forward (4th Doctor & Leela, set after The Robots of Death; 4 & Leela end up in New Hampshire during a blizzard, dealing with an extra-dimensional ice creature, survivalists and secret alien CIA agents tracking down stolen tech. An excellent book for Leela’s characterization)
Fear of The Dark-Trevor Baxendale (5th Doctor, Tegan and Nyssa, set after Arc of Infinity; The 5th Doctor crew encounter a human expedition to the moon of Akoshemon in the late 2300s where an ancient force of darkness is awoken. A great horror story, only read it the once but recall liking it a lot.)
The Eleventh Tiger-David McIntee (1st Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki, set between The Romans and The Web Planet; another excellent historical from McIntee set in 1860’s China)
PDAS THAT ARE OK/ESSENTIAL:
The Murder Game-Steve Lyons (2nd Doctor, Ben and Polly; A rare book set between Power of The Daleks & the Highlanders so no Jamie; introduces the Selachians, fish-aliens wearing suits of armor to resemble far more threatening sharks, they reappear in at least one other novel by Lyons. A murder mystery in space aboard an aged resort station turned into an actual murder mystery. Ben & Polly are fairly well-written here, a traditional but fun book.)
Matrix-Mike Tucker & Robert Perry (7th Doctor & Ace; set after their previous novel, Illegal Alien, in their Season 27/28 continuation; features The Valeyard, Victorian London & Jack The Ripper, an alternate dystopian 60’s London annexed by the US, the brief return of Ace’s Cheetah Planet virus, The Doctor has amnesia for a large chunk of the novel, etc.. Dark and dreary and packed with ideas, a bit of a mess as one would expect of a story focusing on The Valeyard. I like it but get why some don’t.)
Instruments of Darkness-Gary Russell (6th Doctor, Mel and Evelyn Smythe from the Big Finish Audios; a strange book that’s kind of a sequel to Russell’s earlier Business Unusual, it’s still often fun and silly enough that I consider it an OK book, essential in that it continues on from earlier book plots.)
PDAS THAT ARE OK/NON-ESSENTIAL:
Salvation-Steve Lyons (1st Doctor, Steven & Dodo; set in London & New York 1965, featuring god-like beings that take on human form and try to save the human race. Read it once, its a good book but nothing special nor particularly memorable.)
Deep Blue-Mark Morris (5th Doctor, Tegan, Turlough, UNIT & Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart; set between Warriors of The Deep and The Awakening for the 5th Doctor team, between The Green Death and Invasion of The Dinosaurs for UNIT as Mike Yates still works for them. An alien invasion story featuring rivals of the Zygons, the parasitic Xaranti, set at an English beach resort town. An OK book, nothing special other than the 5th Doctor/UNIT team-up.
The Quantum Archangel-Craig Hinto (6th Doctor, Mel, The Master, set in that huge gap between Trial of a Time Lord & Time and The Rani; A massive mess of continuity references that is a camp and silly sequel to The Time Monster, I’m not sure how you could quite describe this novel, you just have to read it. It’s an OK book at best but fun if read in the right mood & wildly imaginative/dense)
Dying In The Sun-Jon de Burgh Miller (2nd Doctor, Ben and Polly, set between Power of The Daleks & The Highlanders; another rare novel in the pre-Jamie 2nd Doctor era, this one slightly similar to the New Who episode Lux. in late 1940’s Hollywood, a cult movement tries to distribute the light-based beings the Selyoids via emotional projection enhanced by the celluloid reels of a new blockbuster film. A good solid book & great for 2, Ben and Polly but not hugely essential)
PDAS THAT I DISLIKE/ESSENTIAL:
Divided Loyalties-Gary Russell (5th Doctor, Adric, Tegan and Nyssa, as well as the 1st Doctor and The Toymaker, set between The Visitation and Black Orchid; One of the more infamous PDAs, featuring much of younger 1st Doctor with other various renegade Time Lords-The Master, The Rani, etc-belonging to a gang of students known as The Deca. Lots of other Time Lord lore/continuity abounds including a character who makes it into the audios (Vansell) Also features lore about The Toymaker & The Guardians-here the Toymaker is The Guardian of Dreams. Essential to understanding much of the DWEU, still a fan wanky mess & not very good.)
PDAS THAT I DISLIKE/NON-ESSENTIAL:
The King of Terror-Keith Topping (5th Doctor, Tegan and Turlough, between The Awakening and Frontios; Set in 90’s LA with corporate aliens attempting to transform and conquer/enslave Earth. A mess of a book, don’t like this one much at all.)
PDAS I HAVEN’T READ/DON’T OWN:
(There’s a lot on this list btw, sigh)
The Devil Goblins From Neptune-Martin Day and Keith Topping (3rd Doctor, Liz Shaw and UNIT; set between Inferno and Terror of The Autons; the title is amazing and camp, believe its referenced in other PDAs a number of times but know nothing about it, don’t own)
The Ultimate Treasure-Christopher Bulis (5th Doctor, Peri and Kamelion; set in the gap between Planet of Fire and The Caves of Androzani, don’t own it, haven’t read, Bulis’ books are almost always generic and dull & this is supposed to be a standard treasure hunt novel so I expect more of the same)
Business Unusual-Gary Russell (6th Doctor, Mel, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart; supposedly the PDAs version of Mel’s proper intro story taking place in the gap between the trial sections of Season 23 and Terror of The Vervoids, also featuring the Autons and UNIT; don’t own it, haven’t read it, hear it’s a pretty good one for Gary Russell but also is overloaded with fanwank/continuity references (it is a 6th Doctor book so that’d fit in better here than elsewhere))
Illegal Alien-Mike Tucker and Robert Perry (7th Doctor and Ace; Tucker & Perry’s 7 & Ace novels are sort of a book version of Season 27/28 albeit not based on any of the proposed ideas for those seasons pre-cancellation of Classic Who; this one has 60’s Cybermen stuck in WWII, IIRC; Don’t own, haven’t read, supposedly a good solid story)
The Roundheads-Mark Gatiss (2nd Doctor, Ben, Polly & Jamie; a humor-based historical set during the English Civil War and featuring Oliver Cromwell, set between The Macra Terror & The Faceless Ones; don’t own, haven’t read, hear it’s a solid and typical Gatiss historical story)
The Face of The Enemy-David McIntee (featuring The Master, Brigadier Lethbirdge-Stewart, UNIT, Ian Chesterton & Barbara Wright, Harry Sullivan; unsure if 3 & Jo appear; a sideways-story set during The Curse of Peladon & before The Sea Devils, the events on Earth while 3 & Jo are away. Don’t own, haven’t read, hear it’s an excellent book & one of McIntee’s best; as it features 3rd Doctor and 1st Doctor era characters meeting and having a side-adventure also involving the alternate-UK from Inferno, I very much look forward to reading this book eventually)
The Hollow Men-Keith Topping & Martin Day (7th Doctor & Ace; set between The Curse of Fenric and Survival though supposedly bits might be after Survival; I do own this one but haven’t read it yet; supposed to be a good, solid, dark 7 & Ace story that makes good use of a traditional story premise)
Catastrophea-Terrance Dicks (3rd Doctor & Jo Grant; set between Planet Of The Daleks & The Green Death & involves The Draconians from Frontier In Space; don’t own, haven’t read, supposed to be a solid Terrance Dicks story, better than many of his books but also not a classic)
Last Man Running-Chris Boucher (4th Doctor & Leela; set between The Robots of Death and Talons of Weng-Chiang; written by Leela’s creator and the last surviving writer of pre-80’s Who until his recent passing, don’t own, haven’t read, supposedly has good ideas but poor prose as Boucher was more of a script-writer than novelist. Still, Boucher’s Who stories are some of my favorites so likely worth checking out)
The Wages of Sin-David McIntee (3rd Doctor, Jo Grant & Liz Shaw; set between The Three Doctors and Carnival of Monsters; The Doctor takes Liz & Jo to Russia in the early 1900’s to see the Tunguska Meteor Crash and wind up getting involved with the Russian Revolution & Rasputin (well before New Who revealed him to be The Master) a few years later instead. Supposed to be an excellent historical but I don’t own, haven’t read it.)
Players-Terrance Dicks (6th Doctor & Peri, also featuring the 2nd Doctor in flashbacks; set between The Mark of The Rani and The Two Doctors, featuring the mysterious Players, aliens who manipulate world events and wars as a game, also featuring Winston Churchhill and set in Boer War South Africa/1930’s London. Fairly standard fare from Terrance Dicks from what I understand, connected to his EDA Endgame & a later PDA, World Game so somewhat essential regardless of how good/bad it is. Don’t own, haven’t read hence why its down here)
Millennium Shock-Justin Richards (4th Doctor & an older Harry Sullivan, set between The Deadly Assassin and The Face of Evil; a direct sequel to Richards’ MA System Shock, dealing with the then-upcoming Y2K crisis being manipulated by aliens masquerading as a major tech corporation. Don’t own, haven’t read this one, own the MA but haven’t read it; referenced in many other books so possibly essential but no idea on how good it might be)
City At World’s End-Christopher Bulis (1st Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan; supposedly Bulis’ best book from the handful of good ones he wrote & a decent early 60’s Who pastiche, I don’t own and haven’t read it)
Last of The Gadarene-Mark Gatiss (3rd Doctor, Jo Grant & UNIT, set between Planet of The Daleks & The Green Death; don’t own, haven’t read, meant to be a nostalgic homage to Terrance Dicks’ novelizations and thus likely very trope-heavy & standard 3rd Doctor fare)
Verdigris-Paul Magrs (3rd Doctor, Jo Grant, Iris Wildthyme, set between The Time Monster & The Three Doctors; another story by Magrs featuring Iris Wildthyme who first appeared in the EDA The Scarlet Empress, I expect this to be camp and silly fun but don’t own, haven’t read)
Heart of TARDIS-Dave Stone (2nd Doctor, Jamie and Victoria and 4th Doctor & Romana I, set between Tomb of The Cyberman & The Abominable Snowmen & The Stones of Blood and The Androids of Tara; I own the book but didn’t get past first couple chapters. Obviously heavy on continuity/series lore with that match-up. Not a fan of Stone’s Who books so not expecting much if I ever attempt another read-through.)
Imperial Moon-Christopher Bulis (5th Doctor, Turlough and Kamelion, set between Resurrection of The Daleks & Planet of Fire. A steampunk homage to Jules Verne novels, supposedly one of Bulis’ good books, haven’t read but do own IIRC.)
Independence Day-Peter Darvill-Evans (7th Doctor & Ace, set between Nightshade and Love and War; a book written by the old VNA editor, I know nothing about this one, haven’t read, don’t own)
Bunker Soldiers-Martin Day (1st Doctor, Steven and Dodo, set between The Massacre and The Ark; set in Kiev in the 1200s but not a pure historical, I know nothing else of this book, don’t own, haven’t read)
Rags-Mick Lewis (3rd Doctor, Jo Grant, UNIT; set sometime between Day of The Daleks & The Three Doctors; don’t own, haven’t read, have heard it’s a terrible and gratuitously violent book)
Asylum-Peter Darvill-Evans (4th Doctor from Season 15, Nyssa from after Terminus; set between The Deadly Assassin and The Face of Evil as well as after Terminus; set in medieval Oxford/London & featuring an out-of-sequence Doctor-companion combo, know little about it but I hear it’s good, don’t own, haven’t read)
Superior Beings-Nick Walters (5th Doctor & Peri, set between Planet of Fire & Caves of Androzani, I know nothing of this book, do own but haven’t read)
Byzantium!-Keith Topping (1st Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki, set during the early part of The Romans where the TARDIS crew aren’t yet involved with the main plot; don’t own, haven’t read)
Bullet Time-David McIntee (7th Doctor & Sarah Jane Smith, set between Lungbarrow & The TV Movie; another out-of-sequence Doctor & companion duo, set in Hong Kong and other Southeast Asian locales in the late 90’s. I own the book but never got past first chapter, hear it’s a great book with a shocking development for the book series)
Psi-ence Fiction-Chris Boucher (4th Doctor & Leela; haven’t read, don’t own, hear it’s one of the better books by Boucher with continued excellent development for Leela, the companion he created)
Palace Of The Red Sun-Christopher Bulis (6th Doctor & Peri, between Season 22 & 23; don’t own, haven’t read, seems like another bland generic book from Bulis)
Amorality Tale-David Bishop (3rd Doctor & Sarah Jane Smith, set between Monster of Peladon & Planet of The Spiders; set in late 40’s-early 50’s post-war London & involving gangsters, I know little of this book, don’t own, haven’t read)
Warmonger-Terrance Dicks (5th Doctor & Peri, set between Planet of Fire and Caves of Androzani; supposedly one of the worst Who books ever written & a sequel to Brain of Morbius that is riddled with continuity errors & gratuitous violence/misogyny, avoid at all costs, don’t own, haven’t read due to the many horrible reviews)
Ten Little Aliens-Stephen Cole (1st Doctor, Ben and Polly, set between The Smugglers and The Tenth Planet; A dark, grim thriller that combines the 1st Doctor era with movies like Alien so I’ve heard, also supposedly has a Choose Your Own Adventure chapter; supposedly quite good, don’t own, haven’t read)
Combat Rock-Mick Lewis (2nd Doctor, Jamie and Victoria, sometime during Season 5; Don’t own it, haven’t read, has a reputation as way too brutal, dark, grotesque, grim and odd but better than Lewis’ previous book, doesn’t sound like it’d fit the 2nd Doctor’s era well at all)
The Suns of Caresh-Paul Saint (3rd Doctor & Jo Grant, set after Carnival of Monsters; the one with the cover where everyone’s bald for some reason. Don’t own, haven’t read, know nothing about it)
Heritage-Dale Smith (7th Doctor & Ace, set between prime Time and Loving The Alien in the PDA version of Season 27/28; set on a human colony with a dark secret in the 61st century, I know little about it. Don’t own, haven’t read)
Blue Box-Kate Orman (6th Doctor & Peri; set between Mark of The Rani and The Two Doctors in the early days of computer hacking in the 1980s, do own this one, haven’t read yet, don’t know much about it but it’s a book by Kate Orman so it’s bound to be good)
Loving The Alien-Mike Tucker and Robert Perry (7th Doctor & Ace, set after Heritage; a follow-up to Illegal Alien with Cybermen in the 50’s, the British Rocket Group and alternate timelines. Don’t own, haven’t read, believe it’s essential in tying up/continuing a number of plots from the PDAs)
The Colony of Lies-Colin Brake (2nd Doctor, Jamie & Zoe, 7 & Ace; set between The Invasion & The War Games & also Ghost Light & the early VNAs; Supposedly a trad but good story, don’t own, haven’t read.)
Wolfsbane-Jacqueline Rayner (4th Doctor & 8th Doctor, Harry Sullivan & Sarah Jane Smith; both a PDA & EDA set during the 8th Doctor’s Stuck on Earth arc, focusing more on Harry, I own the book but haven’t read it, heard it’s good)
Deadly Reunion-Barry Letts & Terrance Dicks (3rd Doctor, Jo Grant, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, set between The Mind of Evil & The Claws of Axos; written for the 40th Anniversary, I hear the first half centered on The Brigadier & Greek Gods is good, the second half not so much. Don’t own, haven’t read.)
Empire of Death-David Bishop (5th Doctor & Nyssa, between Time-Flight and Arc of Infinity; no, not THAT Empire of Death from New Who; supposedly tedious and dull, don’t own it, haven’t read, know little about it.)
Synthespians-Craig Hinton (6th Doctor & Peri, set after Vengeance on Varos; a satire of TV, soap operas and 80’s media featuring The Autons, supposedly quite camp and silly, don’t own, haven’t read)
The Indestructible Man-Simon Messingham (2nd Doctor, Jamie and Zoe, set sometime in Season 6; an homage to Gerry Anderson’s many TV series, I dont own, haven’t read, heard it’s actually quite good)
Match of The Day-Chris Boucher (4th Doctor & Leela, set after The Robots of Death; don’t own, haven’t read, know nothing about it)
Island of Death-Barry Letts (3rd Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, The Brigadier; don’t own, haven’t read, know nothing about it)
Spiral Scratch-Gary Russell (6th Doctor and Mel, set right before Time and The Rani; supposed to be the book version of 6’s proper regeneration story, hear its a mixed bag, don’t own, haven’t read)
World Game-Terrance Dicks (2nd Doctor, set during the Season 6B theorized to exist between The War Games and Spearhead From Space; features The Players from Players and Endgame as well as Napoleon. Also has a reference to psychic paper as New Who had just started while the PDAs were ending. Don’t own, haven’t read)
The Time Travelers-Simon Guerrier (1st Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan, set sometime between The Aztecs and The Dalek Invasion of Earth; set in an alternate timeline spinning off of the events of The War Machines, don’t own, haven’t read)
Atom Bomb Blues-Andrew Cartmel (7th Doctor & Ace, set after Survival; Cartmel returns to write the last PDA, set in an alternate post-war America. Don’t own it, haven’t read it, know little about it)
———
Not having read over half the PDAs, this list may not be the best but hopefully I provide enough info for anyone interested in the series (and makes me want to go read a few of the ones I’ve missed!) Thanks again for likes/comments/reblogs & replies!
