painting setup at student accommodation

layer of newsprint, paints sorted into piles according to what ‘section’ of the portrait they’re on. Reference photos are placed in different areas of (very dim) light to ensure i understand the colours and avoid what happens with what i paint sometimes where you can’t see it in the dark.

the problem was not having the overhead light because it is very yellow and also i would be casting a shadow anyway just because of the placement of whatever

so instead i redirected the light on the extractor fan using a mirror

i really wanted to be as complicated as possible about everything, it’s my favourite thing to do

i’m redoing the portrait of my mother, this is from a few days ago but i want to get it finished before i post it. i want to do it right.

Aroma Monk Motia Attar: The Timeless Natural Fragrance of Jasmine

Fragrance has always been an important part of culture, tradition, and personal expression. Among the many natural perfumes that have stood the test of time, Motia Attar remains one of the most cherished. Known for its delicate floral aroma and soothing qualities, this natural fragrance has been loved for centuries across India and the Middle East.

In this blog, we will explore everything about Motia Attar, its benefits, how it is made, why it is special, and why Aroma Monk Motia Attar is becoming a preferred choice for fragrance lovers seeking authentic and natural scents.

What is Motia Attar?

Motia Attar is a traditional natural perfume extracted from Jasmine flowers through the ancient hydro-distillation process. Motia refers to a variety of jasmine known for its strong yet sweet fragrance. The attar is typically distilled into sandalwood oil, which acts as the base and preserves the aroma for years.

Unlike modern perfumes that contain alcohol and synthetic chemicals, Motia Attar is completely natural and concentrated. This makes it gentle on the skin while providing a long-lasting fragrance.

Brands like Aroma Monk focus on preserving the purity of this traditional fragrance by using authentic ingredients and traditional distillation techniques.

The History of Motia Attar

The tradition of making Motia Attar dates back hundreds of years to the era of the Mughal Empire. During this time, natural attars were widely used by royalty and nobles. The city of Kannauj, India, often called the “Perfume Capital of India,” became famous for producing high-quality natural attars including jasmine-based fragrances.

Even today, artisans in Kannauj continue the legacy using traditional deg bhapka distillation methods to produce authentic attars like Motia Attar.

Modern brands such as Aroma Monk work with traditional techniques while maintaining quality standards to deliver pure fragrance to modern consumers.

How Motia Attar is Made

The production of Motia Attar is a delicate and labor-intensive process. Fresh jasmine blossoms are collected early in the morning when their fragrance is strongest.

The process includes the following steps:

1. Flower Collection

Fresh Motia jasmine flowers are carefully handpicked to maintain fragrance quality.

2. Traditional Distillation

The flowers are placed in copper vessels known as deg containers where they undergo steam distillation.

3. Absorption into Sandalwood Oil

The aromatic vapor is condensed and absorbed into pure sandalwood base oil.

4. Aging Process

The attar is stored in leather bottles for maturation, allowing the fragrance to deepen and stabilize.

Brands like Aroma Monk ensure that this process remains authentic while maintaining product purity and consistency.

Fragrance Profile of Motia Attar

The scent of Motia Attar is soft, romantic, and deeply floral. It captures the natural aroma of blooming jasmine gardens during summer nights.

Its fragrance profile includes:

  • Sweet white floral fragrance
  • Fresh natural jasmine aroma
  • Soft floral perfume notes
  • Subtle earthy undertones
  • Long-lasting natural attar scent

This unique fragrance makes Motia Attar suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.

Benefits of Using Motia Attar

One of the reasons why Motia Attar remains popular is its multiple benefits beyond fragrance.

1. Natural and Chemical-Free

Unlike synthetic perfumes, Motia Attar is a natural perfume oil that does not contain alcohol or harsh chemicals.

2. Long Lasting Fragrance

Because it is highly concentrated, Motia Attar provides a long-lasting natural fragrance that stays on the skin for hours.

3. Aromatherapy Benefits

The scent of jasmine is widely used in aromatherapy to help reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Pure attars such as those offered by Aroma Monk are gentle and suitable for sensitive skin.

today i gave joe his portrait, disbelief is the only word i can use to describe his reaction.

joe is a qualified driving instructor, he taught my mom how to drive! specifically hill starts is the story she always tells me if it gets brought up. His mother lived to be over 100 years old, she only passed fairly recently. my sister and two cousins all have this inside joke with him that they fight for his attention. he vapes. like many men in ballylongford he wears a big hi-vis jacket but joe specifically will leave it in behind the counter in the chipper when hes at the pub.

giving people something you’ve made is always a very awkward experience but that’s only a brief part of the action so i get through it knowing i’ve done what i set out to do and hopefully joe knows he’s appreciated.

my sister deserves a mention too for being there when im failing at socialising with people i’ve known my whole life. shoutout the women behind the scenes.

this isn’t the best photo of this painting but i forgot to take a better one before i gave it away, i know that doesn’t look good for my academics but i can make up for that. i wouldn’t be able to make up for missing a chance to give someone a gift.

Attempted a study of the below photo, taken by my step-son, using the oils I got in a super cheap art pack in Wilko.

Things I learnt:

  • Oils dry superfast & don’t mix well on the page. Unless you don’t want them to.
  • Refer more often to the reference.
  • Actually the cheap plastic palette knife is pretty shit and maybe I should stop buying my art supplies from Wilko…

Photo is taken from the cliffs next to Ales Stenar, a viking-age set of standing stones outside of Kåseberga, Sweden.

Testing the shear strength of adhesives coated on both stainless steel and Cu. ALT

Used cooking oil yields super strong glue and recyclable plastics

Plastics are made from crude oil and petroleum by-products, so a team of scientists decided to explore if they could turn waste cooking oil into a useful plastic material, and they succeeded.

The researchers converted waste cooking oil (WCO) into chemically recyclable polyesters—a type of synthetic plastic—that can serve as an alternative to the widely used fossil-fuel-based polyethylene (PE). This pursuit also resulted in a powerful adhesive that bonded stainless steel plates so strongly that it was able to pull a four-door sedan up a slight hill, as per the findings published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
