I’m going to answer this more about the hockey itself, less narratives, but send me another ask if you’d like more of the latter!!! Okay, thank you so much for asking me!!! I’m honored! The number 1 thing if you want to learn about and get into hockey really is just watching games. It’s incredibly entertaining and while there’s a bunch of little weird rules, the general game play and flow is pretty simple and easy to follow. And the nice thing about the commentators is they will narrate and explain what’s happening as it’s going.
I’m genuinely convinced that if anyone watches 3 full hockey games and gives it some real attention, they will be riveted. In terms of general hockey primers/explainers, Alison Lukan has a great series!! (Also, if you want to start watching hockey soon, now is a great time because Olympic hockey is ongoing and the Olympics announcers will be explaining even more than nhl ones might.)
Okay, so in terms of the oilers specifically, I’m just going to recommend some blogs that I personally like on this more tumblr/y side of things in the oilers fandom and then I’ll do some more traditional hockey resources! I also have many fic writers I love if you are interested in that!!
@nuge @saviorified @goalplz @nymhciv @winglavender @notthequiettype @spencerstastney
These are all ppl that have the oilers as their primary or at least 1 of their top teams. I also have a lot of general hockey ppl who are great follows but I didn’t want to overwhelm.
And then if you’re interested in learning abt the game play and that sort of thing, I find Bruce Curlock a really excellent writer who talks a lot about oilers prospects! Lowetide is amazing at explaining strategy and the technical side of how hockey games work (specifically oilers!). And a general hockey reporter, Dimitri Filipovic puts together awesome highlight reels and analysis of game tape! Shayna Goldman is also a really great general hockey writer! Also, on tumblr itself, @sergeifyodorov! If you like to listen to podcasts, pdo cast is super informative and what chaos is very entertaining (though currently an enemy for the Olympics!).
