On this day in Japan is the 76th anniversary of the bombing of the city of Nagasaki. On this day I want to shout it from the rooftops that Japan was not the only one affected by the cruelties of nuclear testing. Between 1946 and 1958 the US detonated 23 nuclear weapons on Bikini atoll and other areas in the Marshall Islands in Micronesia as part of their nuclear testing programs. Not only did this cause irreparable harm to the surrounding ocean, those that lived on Bikini Island suffered long-term health effects after being relocated back home after the testing. Bikini atoll and Bikini Island are still not inhabitable and the US is still providing reparations (pathetic reparations for the sheer scope of damage and trauma) to the Marshallese people and others from Micronesia for the horrible and unnecessary suffering they endured. We need to also stand by in solidarity with the PI community and their struggles against colonialism, white supremacy, and racism. #marshallislands #micronesia #bikiniatoll #neverforget #nucleartesting #westandbyyou #pacificislandercommunity (at Honolulu, Hawaii)

World’s largest land oil rig, Elk City, OK

This oil rig was used to dig wells for several underground nuclear tests by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission throughout rural New Mexico and Colorado in the 1960s. The idea of nuclear fracking was soon abandoned and replaced by hydraulic fracking.

Huge thanks to Süddeutsche Zeitung’s weekend print edition for publishing our story on Runit Dome, a leaking US nuclear waste site in the Marshall Islands that is increasingly vulnerable to sea level rise and other consequences of climate change. Watch the video and read the story online.

“People of the world should know: There’s this great big cement dome at sea level filled with plutonium out here in the Pacific, that in the near future will be underwater.” - Jack Niedenthal, Bikini Atoll Trust Liaison

From 1946-1958, the US detonated 67 nuclear bombs on the Pacific nation of the Marshall Islands. The explosive yield was the equivalent of 1.6 Hiroshima bombs detonated every day over the course of 12 years. In Enewetak, the US tried to clean up the islands by mixing the top layer of contaminated soil with radioactive debris, dumping it into a crater on one of the islands, and covering it up with an 18-inch thick concrete cap, known as Runit Dome. Locals call it The Tomb.

Watch the video and read the story in the Guardian and Süddeutsche Zeitung, drumbeat pieces to our multimedia series in the fall.

Theale Industrial Estate, Berkshire.

Theale Commercial Estate comprises a modern well established industrial/warehouse estate of steel portal frame construction with full height external profile steel cladding under a pitched roof incorporating translucent roof panels providing good natural light.

Many local people report intense rays of light emanating from the units’ translucent roofs and local cancer rates are exponentially higher in West Berkshire than anywhere else in the world. Theale Industrial Estate’s Operations Director John ‘Thealey’ McTheale recently told The Theale Gazette that, 'There’s absolutely no nefarious government-backed nuclear testing happening here and anyone who says there is is a fucking liar and I’ll quite happy step outside with them.’

– Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project’s “Trinity” test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan’s nuclear tests in May of 1998. This leaves out North Korea’s two alleged nuclear tests in this past decade (the legitimacy of both of which is not 100% clear).

Each nation gets a blip and a flashing dot on the map whenever they detonate a nuclear weapon, with a running tally kept on the top and bottom bars of the screen. Hashimoto, who began the project in 2003, says that he created it with the goal of showing"the fear and folly of nuclear weapons.“ It starts really slow — if you want to see real action, skip ahead to 1962 or so — but the buildup becomes overwhelming.

North Korea’s underground nuclear testing this Tuesday may round up severe implications for that nation. The world awaits to see if China will allow the U.N. to impose sanctions on its ally, but it is almost expected that the United States will place its own sanctions against North Korea. This has been the third nuclear testing by North Korea, and by far it’s most advanced. Even longtime ally, China, was shocked that Pyongyang would test out such an act. China has summoned North Korea’s ambassador in an effort to get some answers in regards to the nuclear test. North Korea has also cited the United States as the reasoning for the testing; and claimed if there is hostility by the U.S. it will continue more testing. Experts are trying to figure out if the nuclear testing used plutonium or uranium. Uranium is an easier material to enrich and would mean greater military implications if North Korea tested that element, not to mention there are great deposits of uranium located in North Korea. As of now it doesn’t seem as if North Korea has the capability to make a nuclear device, but we now know that they are much closer than before. We can expect to see more U.S. troops in the Asian-pacific region as a safeguard to North Korea and its intentions.
