In ancient times #musicandmath and astronomy were closely related areas of inquiry and philosophy. #plato described music and astronomy as “twinned” studies of sensual recognition (music for the ears and astronomy for the eyes). Since today marks a once in a lifetime observable orbital conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn I thought I might explore the music/astronomy connection in a post about natural harmonics, how to practice them and how to use them in pieces.
#pythagoras discovered the precise relationships between the lengths of vibrating strings and the pitches they produce. When strings on a violin or guitar etc are stopped or fingered at lengths in simple integer ratios to the length of the full string, they produce consonant intervals. Similarly, planetary orbits are considered to be in resonance when their periods of revolution can be expressed in simple integer ratios. Planetary resonance in our solar system can be found between the orbits of Neptune and Pluto as well as between several of Jupiter’s moons. (Saturn and Jupiter are not in resonance with each other). So the solar system seems to be only partly “in tune”! Lol!

Ok bowed instruments harmonics can be sustained after the finger is removed from the the string by gradually increasing bow speed and bringing it ever closer to the bridge. The opposite motions will cause the harmonic to revert back to the pitch of the full string length. Practicing harmonics in this way is a great tone exercise as well as offering expressive and convenient fingering options as shown in the video.

The National Council on Teachers of Mathematics has long linked music to mathematical development. When young children explore patterns, use reasoning, sing motion songs, and use spatial visualization, for example, they are having mathematical experiences. ⁣
