Prepping for a post…

I had hoped to publish another Beake-related account this week, but circumstances have conspired against me. Part of the reason is I am now much-more disciplined in the amount of work I do before beginning the actual writing. Let me explain.

In times past, I’d write a post, including sources, but without adding details to my Family Historian (FH) database. Ancestry is my testing tree to which I…

Bracket Seeds and Methodology: Unlucky Duckies

As mentioned in this post, the 30 species contained in the tournament represent a selection of the 48 species of native North American birds in the order Anseriformes (ducks, geese, and swans), according to the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 7th edition. To pick the species for this tournament, I looked back at how species had performed in my 4 previous tournaments. I looked at how many rounds of voting they had survived (survival through a round of voting means they won that round or tied with their opponent) and took an average across all 4 tournaments. To be included in this poll, a species must have had an average survival of at most 1 round and additionally must never have finished in the top 4 of any of the previous tournaments.

In order to produce brackets that would work out well and not result in early match-ups of (relatively) popular species, I seeded the species according to 5 popularity metrics: the number of google search results for the common name, the number of tumblr posts in the species’ tag over the past week, days since the last tumblr post in the species’ tag, number of unique visual features (interesting colouration, distinctive markings, etc.), the average number of rounds survived in previous tournaments, and the highest round they have ever reached in previous tournaments (a species may reach round 3 having only survived 1 round of voting if it had a high seed and only entered in round 2, which is why both of these metrics were considered). I then developed a formula that used the metrics to produce a score for each species where the higher the score, the greater the prospective popularity. I manually checked the ranking of species to see if the order looked reasonable (with relatively popular or common species at the top, and less common or popular species at the bottom), in order to verify that my scoring system was performing as expected. The bird with the highest score became the first seed, the second highest became the second seed, and so on, for all 30 species.

The seed positions are as follows:

  1. Long-tailed Duck
  2. Masked Duck
  3. Cinnamon Teal
  4. Canada Goose
  5. Blue-Winged Teal
  6. Muscovy Duck
  7. Barnacle Goose
  8. American Wigeon
  9. Ring-necked Duck
  10. Common Goldeneye
  11. Greater White-fronted Goose
  12. Redhead
  13. Red-breasted Merganser
  14. Spectacled Eider
  15. Brant
  16. Pink-footed Goose
  17. Ross’s Goose
  18. White-cheeked Pintail
  19. Mottled Duck
  20. Common Eider
  21. American Black Duck
  22. Canvasback
  23. Tundra Swan
  24. Snow Goose
  25. Greater Scaup
  26. Cackling Goose
  27. Gadwall
  28. Surf Scoter
  29. White-winged Scoter
  30. Lesser Scaup

Silencing Methods

Q) Was Socrates set up?

A) Many scholars and historians believe that Socrates was, in a sense, ‘set up’ - though not necessarily through a conspiracy in the modern sense. His trial and execution in 399 BCE were the result of complex political, social, and philosophical tensions in Athens at the time.

Here’s a breakdown of the context:

⚖️ The Charges

Socrates was accused of:

  • Impiety: Not recognizing the gods of the city.
  • Corrupting the youth: Influencing young Athenians with his ideas and methods.

These charges were vague and symbolic,
likely masking deeper anxieties about his influence.

🏛️ Political Undercurrents

  • Socrates had associations with controversial figures like Critias (a leader of the brutal Thirty Tyrants) and Alcibiades (a flamboyant and treacherous politician). Though Socrates himself was apolitical, these ties made him suspect in the eyes of many Athenians.
  • After the fall of the Thirty Tyrants, Athens was trying to stabilize its democracy. Socrates’ questioning of authority and tradition may have been seen as a threat to civic unity.

🧠 Philosophical Provocation

  • Socrates’ method - relentless questioning that exposed ignorance - embarrassed powerful people. He was seen as a gadfly, provoking discomfort in the name of truth.
  • His refusal to compromise or flee when sentenced to death was part of his philosophical stance: he believed in obeying the laws of the city, even if unjust.

So while there’s no evidence of a secret plot, Socrates was certainly targeted as a symbolic figure - his death served as a kind of political and cultural purge. Plato’s dialogues suggest that the trial was more about silencing a disruptive voice than enforcing justice.

How I am collecting data

The first step in my data collection process is writing out my data collection method to make sure I understand how to do it and don’t have to redo it later. As I began writing out the steps, I had questions about the data collection process. The first question was about scope, should I collect the individual comments? I couldn’t find any clear answers in the text, which is usually a good sign that maybe it’s not necessary. However, we are doing an audience analysis and that may make the data important. Based on the conclusion in the Capriotti article, Universities have room to grow in identifying the best kind of information to include in their content strategy to increase engagement and they should do more to analyze the audience and the discourse community to create content that is more appealing to them. With that in mind, it may be useful to collect individual comments from the posts.

The second question I had was about the method of collection. I am probably overthinking this, but I want to make sure my intended method of taking snapshots of the posts and comments on my phone would be acceptable.

I took advantage of the Thursday Check in post to ask these questions of Dr. P. I’ll collect them anyway, just to be on the safe side until I hear back from her.

With those questions asked and assuming the answer to my questions is yes, I will start by selecting a time frame to collect the posts from Instagram. Earlier this week, I selected the English and World Languages Instagram account for this project. I selected it because out of the two Meta socials, I prefer Instagram over Facebook.

The time frame I have chosen is the first 10 consecutive posts of the Fall 2025 semester. That gives enough time for the data to be historical and close enough that I don’t have to worry about scrolling back too far. I will record the time I navigate to the ENWL account through the app on my phone, take a screenshot of the account with details on follower count, bio information, etc. Then I’ll find the first post of the 2025 Fall semester and take screenshots of each post and all publicly available data, including comments. I will then use the information from the last screenshot to record the end time of my data collection.

I will then code the data for the number of likes, shares, comments into a data chart and make notes as necessary.

That’s my process! Please let me know if you see any holes in my methodology!

I differentiate between “prayer” and “petition” in my practice.

Prayer is done with the expectation that the Person will help you, bless you, etc. out of the goodness of their heart. Petitioning is an explicitly magical act: you’re compensating the Person for their time with offerings (candles, incense, etc.)

I used to have a real aversion to prayer, but I’ve been talking to a certain saint recently and he said something that made me completely flip my stance on things. He said that prayer doesn’t have to be from a place of subservience. It can just be talking to a friend and asking them to do a favor for you. That’s kind of the point of my brand of witchcraft: the spirits are your equal in most cases.

Anyway, I tried a couple test prayers, and I have to say it’s not as bad as my brain was making it out to be. It’s kind of nice to be able to leave it all on the table.

Ahh thank you for taking the time to send feedback! :)

We have an FAQ for that. Basically, words/terms are added to and removed from checkbox lists based on statistics only. For this reason, if you identify with the term “intersex” for your gender, or anything else that doesn’t have a checkbox, please type it into the textboxes. It is really important, and those words are counted.

The checkboxes don’t do anything except make data processing easier. Checkboxes ensure that everyone who identifies with a particular term enters it the same way, which makes counting them easier. However, provided and visible options are always more likely to be chosen than invisible ones you have to type in! So the checkbox selection method takes that into account as well.

[ The 2025 Gender Census survey is open now until 30th August ]
