There was a liveliness to this place you’d never felt before.
Sunlight filtered in through windows, casting a warm glow throughout the tavern. Upbeat music danced along the painted walls and down your straightened spine. Your foot betrayed you with every beat, the only crack in your stiff posture. Townspeople and Marines alike filled the space, grabbing a drink or bite to eat with friends.
A joyful laugh drew your gaze to a table in the center of the room. A boy wearing an old straw hat gestured wildly in the air, his pink-haired companion desperately trying to calm him down. You bit the inside of your mouth harder, fighting the smile pulling at the corners of your lips.
“Ahem.”
Fingers snapped close to your face, dragging you back. Your eyes flitted down to the table in front of you. Helmeppo frowned, breathing out an exaggerated sigh.
“Did you hear a word of what I just said or did it go through your sorry excuse for a brain?”
Your face falls flat, expressionless. “No, I didn’t. Sorry.”
“‘Sorry,’ what?”
“Sorry, sir.”
