I finally watched the second part of LRF, because it takes a long time for me to actually *watch* something instead of just reading, and, well.
It’s not bad, but it is incomplete in exactly the most confusing manner if one wants to understand the more complex and nuanced parts of year 2, for example, the reasons for Danton’s trial, or what happened on 8th-9th Thermidor, which this movie turns into a spontaneous uprising of the type of July 14th.
There is also no war left starting with Valmy, as if that was a final victory? And barely a mention of Vendée..
(To be fair had to go back and rewatch “that scene” of LTELV to cleanse my palate (you know, the “tout est perdu”…😭))
Also Camille my beloved doesn’t even get to confront Robespierre at his own trial, leaving the stage entirely to Danton 🤨
I am not even starting on Saint-Just who barely does anything on his own volition after the initial speech, except for, naturally, showing off his fabulous hair. The armies, the Ventôse decrees, the Constitution of 1793, anyone?!
It’s interesting to watch this *after* getting into Frev and not as a gateway. I think I would’ve had a lot more patience with it a year ago 😅
I suppose the best part is that I watched it in French with French CC &over thr English subtitles so that I wouldn’t rely on them" and it worked about 90% of the time - Lemur Learns French for Revolution Reasons plan is coming along nicely!
