GENTRY-PRIME NOTES: ONTOLOGICAL CARTOGRAPHY
I keep extensive notes of my exact path across the multiverse. These include this highly stylized map I’ve etched into my armor, which charts every reality I visit by local variance and entropic decay. The large white star on the left denotes my so-called “Prime” reality.
I am aware that’s an onto-egocentric perspective.
Bite me.
I determine “Local Variance” by studying local instances of myself, charting observable differences against my own nature as a baseline. It’s a flawed metric, but it’s the only one I’ve got. It’s the same reason I only ever visit realities I exist in: helps me preserve sanity and not get lost.
Gentries? Gentry? Is our name plural or singular?
FUCK, what about Variants with totally different names?
After many leaps, I’ve come to believe that all Gentrys, and thus all universes and entities that emerged within them, exist on a sliding scale of ontological variance: like a hall of mirrors, each more distorted the further I go from the relative vantage point of my origin universe. Following that logic, I believe there must exist a instance of myself that’s my perfect ontological opposite. I’ve dubbed this theoretical doppelganger of mine
It’s the best name I could come up with.
“ANTI-GENTRY”, “REVERSE-GENTRY"…
… They just don’t feel right.
I can’t overstate how fucked this is.
Imagine the worst version of yourself: you, with all your potential and ability, but one whose worldview is so completely opposite of yours that they would destroy everything you are because they would view your existence as fundamentally repulsive. A nightmare reflection of you.
Your very own personal ”Mr. Hyde“.
With how depraved and dangerous some of my instances have been… I’ve figured out multiversal travel via means of quantum tunneling on an intellectual lark; as my intellectual mirror but moral opposite, they will make all the same discoveries I have, and immediately leverage them to cause harm on an unfathomable scale. This Counter-Gentry variant would be too depraved and dangerous to be allowed to exist in any universe.
And seeing as how I’m the only Gentry I’ve found traveling along the multiversal constant, the task of putting my personal devil to the sword falls to me. Good news, finding them is easy: every leap I make further from my home brings me closer to them.
Of course, my opposite must be doing the same. The second they crack multiversal travel, they’ll realize what I have, and for much the same reason as I’m hunting them, they’ll hunt me back. This catastrophic encounter is not just likely, but our antipodal natures make it truly inevitable.
We will find each other.
And when we do, for better or worse, this ends.
Another possibility has kept me up at night lately.
If the universe is infinite, then variance must be infinite.
Does that mean that there’s no PERFECT COUNTER-GENTRY, BUT RATHER AN UNENDING LEGION OF GENTRYS SO DEPRAVED THAT WE’LL INEVITABLY BE DRAWN INTO SOME CRAZY ENDLESS CONFLICT?
BY LEAVING MY HOME REALITY,
DID I START A MULTIVERSAL WAR… WITH MYSELF?
………LOG END………
A new year means a new peak into my "ACROSS THE GENTRYVERSE” project! My patrons voted and they wanted to see what a multiversal Gentry would look like, surely inspired by my good friend @therightrighthand ’s awesome Delverse and their character DEL-PRIME.
I’ve fallen out of posting these here, but in fairness, I’ve got a lot of places to post and this one skipped my mind for this project. I’ll make a point of fixing that. Im recommitting myself to making sure that every month, my Patrons will vote on what world to go to, and you’ll all see the final results here!
In the meantime, GENTRY will continue in his Helldiver 2 comic universe every other week as normal! Thanks Voyagers~

“Middle class” doesn’t exist yet. I’m not an expert, but members of the gentry are upper class. Under the gentry was merchant class and then working class (which was most of the population at that time).
The gentry is below the aristocracy, ie people with actual titles like earl or baron, but they are all upper class. Within the gentry, you’d have variation, Mr. Darcy and Lady Catherine from Pride & Prejudice with their wealth and family connections are near the very top. Mr. Bennet is in the upper middle, solid wealth but not good family connections, while someone like Mr. Collins (before he inherits Longbourn or if he never did) is near the bottom, because he has to actually work (though not very hard) for his income. At the very bottom are poor widows and spinsters who have just enough money not to work. There aren’t any of these in Pride & Prejudice, the best example is Mrs. & Miss Bates in Emma. Mr. Bingley is accepted as gentry by everyone in the novel, but he’s a newcomer based on merchant-class wealth.
Wickham is born working class, could have been gentry if he’d accepted a position in the church, is semi-temporary gentry because he’s an officer in the militia. Here is a big post about the gentry class and the levels.
There were more class distinctions in Jane Austen’s time and from what I have read, the exact lines were debated, but Jane Austen’s characters, even the poor ones, are almost all gentry and the gentry is upper class.

Royal titles obviously belong to the royal family, exclusively, and their are essentially only two types of titles that exist within it. There is the King/Queen/Monarch, who is the head of the monarchy or the spouse of the head. Below them is the title of Prince/Princess/Prinxe, who are the direct descendants of the King/Queen/Monarch for two generations, meaning only the children and grandchildren get these titles, anyone following that is not actually a Prince/Princess/Prinxe. These are the only royal titles that exist.
Unfortunately, the male title does always outrank the female title, and the gender neutral title does as well. So, a King’s bride may be given the title of Queen, but the Queen’s husband would actually have to be given a different title, usually Prince. As for same sex relationships, the King’s husband would be a Prince and the Queen’s wife would be a Princess. King and Monarch are actually of the same rank, so a Monarch’s wife would still be Queen, while the husband would be a Prince, and if the spouse was non-binary they’d have to be Prinxe. The title of Regent is tacked onto an existing title, giving them more power, but only temporarily. So, if the King is ill and unable to do his job, you may end up with a Queen Regent, Prince Regent, Princess Regent, Prinxe Regent. This era is called a Regency, and it’s to say that the Kingdom is under the rule of another temporarily. Minor’s cannot be Regents.
As for other members of the royal family, such as siblings to the King/Queen/Monarch or nieces/nephews/neib, they do not technically get royal titles, they instead usually end up being given peerage titles.
The peerage is a ranking consisting of five ranks, Duke/Duchess/Dux, Marquis/Marchioness/Marchix, Earl or Count/Countess/Countum, Viscount/Viscountess/Viscountum and Baron/Baroness/Baronum. Again, male title outranks the female title, and the gender neutral title is on the same rank as the female title for this one, since these are new terms while Monarch is an old term. The three highest ranking of the peerage have heirs who are automatically entitled to a title, which they may choose, however the children of Viscounts/Viscountesses/Viscountums and Barons/Baronesses/Baronum are not always going to automatically get a title. The eldest may inherit their parents title, but their siblings will at most be referred to as Lord/Lady/Laird unless they are given a different title. This may encourage them to marry up in the hierarchy.
The reason we tend to think of the siblings of the King/Queen/Monarch as being Duke/Duchess/Dux is because it is the highest title they may be granted without it being a royal title. They’re still considered part of the royal family, but since they’re not part of the direct lineage, they cannot be referred to with a royal title, thus they’ll be given the highest title possible in most cases, although they may be given lower titles for various reasons. Their descendants may also be granted any Peerage that is lower than the one their parents have. So the eldest child of a Duke may be given the title of Marchix, and down the sibling order may get lower and lower titles or all of the same titles (rare since that requires a lot of land).
Marrying into the peerage does not guarantee a title, but a Duke’s wife may be called a Duchess and so on for the rest of the titles. Since the male titles do outrank the female and gender neutral titles however, their spouses would have to be given a lower title, usually just Lord/Lady/Laird, although generosity may allow for a peerage for that spouse.
Below the peerage is the gentry, which consist of people who are nobility in some form, as in above the common people, but aren’t typically considered noblepeople. The gentry includes Baronet/Baronette/Baronetum, Knight, Esquire and Gentlepeople. These people would typically all be referred to as either Sir/Dame/Ser, or sometimes none of these. Their children again, inherit the rank their parents have, but have no entitlement to a rank of their own. These people will also not be referred to as Lord/Lady/Laird, as they do not rank high enough for those honourifics. They’re also not typically considered to be debutants. They don’t have a coming out to society thing, nor do they attend the fancy parties.
There are other titles, such as Archduke/Archduchess/Archdux and Margrave/Margravine/Margravum, but the first one is actually specific to Austria and the second is specific to the German border, whereas a lot of the ones I’ve discussed, while specific to Europe and countries colonised by Europe, don’t tend to have any one country their from. Archduke/Archduchess/Archdux would be a royal title, but the lowest one, and Margrave/Margravine/Margravum is a military rank around the same as Marquis/Marchioness/Marchix.
If there’s any titles I missed or any details I got wrong, let me know! This is just as far as I know, but I could be wrong in some places.
*** I will always remember my father repeatedly self-identifying as a “GENTLEMAN FARMER”, apparently a remembrance of his family’s former station: landowners with tenant farmers. My father married somehow below himself; it all ended in a divorce and a never-ending feud about money and social status. That made me who I am: some kind of a conservative with here and there some progressive views. I guess I owe my (multisided) personality to this very special class called GENTRY. And I would certainly fit in a Jane Austen’s novel, as could be expected. Politics: first of all, I don’t believe in the hereditary rule. Any monarch ought to be elected for a start, but for life, as any Lord in the House of Lords. And this, because it is a more balanced constitutional system. About all those lost times, I consider that we (my brother and I) are just surviving …dinosaurs, as I told him once.
