6. Space AU

I really want to see a space AU, but I have zero knowledge.

Anyway, I’m just making stuff up now. Don’t be too serious pls.

So, Techno is a general or something. He flies a spaceship on a mission, but ends up crash-landing on an unknown planet due to an accident. His ship is broken, so he can’t go back for now and has to figure out how to survive in the wilderness here.

While exploring, Techno notices that there doesn’t seem to be any civilization on this planet, but there is a group of mysterious white blob-like creatures that all look the same. Only two stand out—one wearing a headband and the other wearing tiny sunglasses (where did they get sunglasses that small?). Techno chases these two little things deep into an unknown cave and finds many signs of battle. Before he can take a closer look, he gets caught in a spider web and is hoisted up. As he struggles, he turns around and comes face-to-face with a being that has eight eyes and the lower body of a giant spider. This person was about to kill him, but upon seeing Techno, he immediately gets scared and runs away (Techno: Wait, the other six eyes can actually close??). Before leaving, the spider-like creature even lets him down.

Techno was quite confused, feeling like that creature held a ruler-like status on this planet, yet he couldn’t understand why it didn’t want to harm him. Well, since things had come to this, he might as well eat first (for real). Honestly, he hadn’t eaten anything since the crash landing, but he had no idea what was edible. Thinking about it, he figured he might as well get some sleep first. Since this place seemed to be the spider creature’s territory and it didn'tt want to hurt him, he just lay down and fell asleep right there. Somehow, he felt oddly at ease—or maybe he had an inexplicable trust in that spider creature.

The next morning (or so it seemed), he woke up to find those two little things sitting on his head, observing him. Techno sat up and noticed some fruits placed beside him. Though they looked a bit strange, as he had never seen such species before, seeing those two little creatures looking like they were about to snatch the food and not getting sick after eating it, Techno decided to give it a try. To his surprise, it wasn’t toxic. For the next few days, he would wake up to find food waiting for him. Then, one day, he finally caught the culprit—it was indeed that spider creature.

Now that he was caught, the spider creature didn’t run away. It introduced itself as Dream. Techno’s first reaction was, “Holy shit, you can speak human language!” Dream’s reaction was subtle, just saying, “…after all, the upper half of my body is human,” clearly leaving something unsaid. Techno then half-heartedly introduced himself and asked some questions about the planet. As Dream answered, he noticed that Techno seemed to treat him like a complete stranger he had just met. When Dream learned that Techno had lost some of his memories during a mission, he showed a relieved yet sorrowful expression, but Techno didn’t notice.

Dream explained that the original ruler of this place was a mysterious giant spider XD. Dream had fought desperately to kill it but ended up being parasitized, which turned him into what he was now. Those blobs seemed to be either offspring or something like followers of the giant spider, but now they were more or less like Dream’s children… friends (biologically they could be considered children, but Dream found it too weird, and he really saw SNF as buddies). Techno, being sharp, asked, “So, you were originally human?” Dream fell silent but seemed to confirm it. Then he said it was getting late and Techno should eat and rest. Being an introverted guy who had only ever killed aliens and never really talked heart-to-heart with one (though strictly speaking, Dream wasn’t really an alien), Techno didn’t know what else to say.

For the next few days, Dream took Techno to explore this not-so-big planet while also helping to find a way to repair Techno’s spaceship. At one point, Techno asked if anyone else had ever wandered here before. Dream first said, “Only you,” then paused and added that there had been another one a long time ago. Techno asked what happened to that person, and Dream said he left, but the lie was so obvious that Techno grew suspicious. Although he felt an inexplicable sense of trust toward this person, he was, after all, a general who had fought on battlefields for years. He kept wondering if Dream was trying to lower his guard to eat him (even though Dream clearly had the chance on the very first day). In short, Techno still wasn’t entirely at ease.

Then Techno took Dream to see the spaceship, hoping to test his reaction. But Dream didn’t seem the least bit unfamiliar with it. He went up, touched it for a while, and even exclaimed, “Wow, the new model looks so cool!” Techno asked how he was so familiar with their fleet’s models. Dream stammered that the last person who came here was from the same place as Techno, then changed the subject, saying there might be a way to fix it. Techno grew even more suspicious—how could he not? An alien spider-creature who recognizes your spaceship and even knows how to repair it—it’s just too suspicious.

Starting the next day, Dream actually began bringing back parts from who-knows-where and started repairing the ship. After observing for a while, Techno took advantage of Dream’s distraction and followed him, eventually discovering a wrecked spaceship that was beyond any hope of repair and looked like it had crashed a long time ago. Techno suspected that Dream had killed the original owner of the ship. Thinking that, as a general, he had to at least bring back news of his comrade’s fate, he went inside and searched around, eventually finding a diary.

The diary recorded the daily life of its owner during an exploration mission with a teammate, complete with many childlike stick-figure drawings. The strangest part was that Techno noticed this teammate had the same name as him, and the more he read, the more familiar it felt. His head started to itch, as if memories were about to resurface. As he flipped further, he was shocked to find that the diary’s owner had a crush on him. Reading even further, after an accident occurred, the diary’s owner wrote about desperately hoping Techno had survived while struggling to survive on the planet himself, gradually giving up hope that anyone would come to rescue him. The diary ended with the realization, after a severe injury, that he had been parasitized and was about to undergo mutation.

“I don’t know if I can survive, and even if I do, I’m not sure I’ll still be myself. But no matter what… I can’t go back anyway.

…It doesn’t matter, as long as Techno survived. He’s better than me, he’ll definitely be fine. I wonder how he’s doing now… I remember him mentioning before that his family wanted to set him up with someone… Hah, how long ago was that? I can’t even remember anymore. Maybe he’s already been arranged one by now, or maybe he found someone himself. I hope he ends up with someone he loves who loves him back. Why can’t that someone be me. Techno, I miss you so much. Why didn’t you come find me? Did you abandon me? I hate you. I want you to live. This is my choice. Dream is dead. I’ll be fine. I’m so scared. Am I going to die? Will I become that monster? I’m so lonely, so scared, it hurts so much. It’s fine. It’ll be over soon. We’ll survive. I believe in him. He’ll be fine. I’ll be fine. I miss you so much.”

The last picture was from their trainee days—back when Techno wasn’t a general yet, and Dream was still human.

Techno watched until, without even realizing it, tears began to fall. Most of his memories had returned by now. He and Dream had been the two most outstanding trainees in their batch, often playfully called rivals. After enlisting, because only the other could match their skill level, they were paired as partners. During an exploration mission, they were ambushed and surrounded by enemy forces, with almost no chance of turning the situation around. Both wanted the other to take the escape pod while they stayed behind. In the end, Dream kissed him, caught Techno off guard, shoved him into the escape pod, and sent him off. Then Techno lost his memory from the severe impact and was found later, not even remembering who he was. With the help of family and friends, he gradually remembered his own identity—but still not Dream. At the time, the war between the two sides was intense. If Techno had been told about Dream then, he would’ve dropped everything to go looking for him. But the military needed him, so Philza ordered everyone not to mention Dream. They did search for him privately, but he was never found. In the end, they could only declare him KIA.

When Techno was brainstorming, he glanced down and noticed those two little things had followed him at some point. Sapnap was angrily bumping into Techno, as if saying, “You pink-haired pig, how dare you abandon my mom? No, my brother!” George was like, “Have you finish? Someone’s coming back” (No, they can’t talk). Techno wiped his tears, took the photo, and quietly slipped away. Then he saw that Dream had been repairing the spaceship these past few days using parts stripped from his own wreckage, showing no intention of returning or confronting Techno before he left.

On the day the spaceship was fixed, Techno suggested they have one last meal together. Though Dream was reluctant, he naturally wanted Techno to return to his own life. Since it was the last time, he agreed. As they ate, he lost consciousness and woke up already on the spaceship (with his two “good brothers” sitting on his head, glaring and waiting for him to wake up). Techno was on a call with his family, saying, “Bruh, I’m not dead—Technoblade Never Dies. And Phil, when I get back, you better explain why you didn’t tell me about Dream.” Dream was completely baffled, wondering if he had been drugged. Techno was like, “You said that fruit had sleep-inducing effects, so I boldly tried adding a tiny bit.” Dream: “You really weren’t worried about poisoning me, huh?” Techno: “Haven’t you always been tough as nails?”

Since he was already tied up, Dream knew Techno had regained his memories. At the person’s request, the heartfelt, tearful confession between the parties involved is omitted here. Dream asked Techno what the point was in taking him back now, especially since he had become like this. He would just be seen as a monster by others back home, and might even be captured for experiments. Unable to hold back after years of repression, he started venting all sorts of negative thoughts. Annoyed, Techno turned on autopilot and kissed him, saying, “This is payback for before. Next time you dare make decisions on your own, just try me.”

Still in a daze, Dream’s first words were, “So… your family didn’t set you up with anyone?”

Techno: …I’m too busy killing people to have time for romance.

Dream: Oh… So why did you kiss me just now…?

Techno: Bruh, have you really gone feral?

Dream: I’ve been alone in that godforsaken place for who knows how long! A decade at least! The fact that I can still speak is a damn miracle, okay!?

Techno: So how do you still remember how to talk?

Dream: …Turns out the spaceship’s flight log videos are still viewable…

Techno: Okay, enough. I’ll find you a therapist when we get back. What you need to do now is forget that decade-old video and focus on the me in front of you, got it?

Dream: …Uh, not entirely

Techno: …Which means I will marry you once we go back.

Dream: Huh?

(Afterword)

Techno: First off, let me clarify that this question is purely for scientific research purposes, and also because of Wilbur’s damn curiosity.

Dream: What’s the problem?

Techno: The thing is… with you looking like that, how do you, uh… like… I mean… that… uh…

Dream: …There’s a reproductive opening (epigyne)…

Techno: …So XD is female…?

Dream: Hermaphroditic (。

Techno: …So…

Dream: I recommend you take some contraceptive measures. Although I suspect the offspring would likely just be blobs, the quantity might be quite high.

Techno: You’re saying something quite extraordinary in such a calm tone… But what I actually wanted to ask is whether you’re going to eat me after we’re done (PS: Some female spiders consume the male after mating).

Dream: ? If you keep asking such dumb questions, I’m going to eat you right now.

Additional Setting

- Blob is XD’s offspring but also a food reserve. SNF was born when Dream first mutated and lost consciousness—his body produced it on its own (don’t ask). Therefore, it has a human-like personality (the headband and sunglasses were DIYed by Dream). Theoretically, Dream is the biological mother, but Dream treats them as siblings, so they also treat their birth mother as a sibling

- After Dream mutated, the ends of his hair turned white (XD has white hair). When he gets emotional or his instincts take over, eight eyes appear.

-Dream: So if I really gave birth to your… blobs, would they have pig noses?

Techno: ? I’m a human.

If Dream really were to give birth, it wouldn’t be many, but they’d be some weird blobs—like ones with horns, cat ears, a creeper face, or even a Skeppy face (.

Dream: (in chaos)

Techno: That’s way creepier than a pig’s snout, okay?

-Dream, having lived in the wild for ten years, still remembers how to speak. Half the reason is that he went crazy pretending Techno was still by his side, watching videos of him from the miraculously preserved flight logs on the spaceship. The other half is that, to Dream, SNF sounds like they’re speaking human language (though outsiders just hear them as squeaking).

-Even after losing his memory, Techno still hears voices in his head—actually, it’s Dream’s voice (his subconscious still remembers, since Dream used to chatter around him all day). But at this point, Techno can’t recognize it. The voices only stop after he crash-lands and sees Dream for the first time.

-Although Dream says Techno better use contraception measures, when Techno tries to pull out and finish outside, Dream’s “little head” (the reproductive instinct of the maternal body) takes over his “big head” and doesn’t let him pull out. So, it still ends up inside, and they still end up having offspring. After last time’s litter of four, Dream decides to eat the eggs before they form into blobs to avoid interfering with their good sex life. The ones that do form are treated as siblings, while the unformed ones are just reserve food. XD does this too. It’s all about self-sufficiency. Since Dream’s mind is half XD-ified, he feels no guilt. The main thing is the psychological shock Techno suffers.

-Dream has venom inside his body, but it is part of a different physiological system, so the scenario Techno fears—"too much bodily fluid exchange might poison him"—won’t happen.
