Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another
Joachim Trier, Sentimental Value
Ryan Coogler, Sinners
WILL WIN: Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another. If the Oscar voters are willing to finally bequeath gold to Anderson, it should be this one. His vivid compositions and wild characters have been dancing across the silver screen for three decades. After missing out directing for There Will be Blood and Phantom Thread, his name will finally be called.
SHOULD WIN: Anderson. I’m a big fan of Coogler’s work; his vision and storytelling will be rewarded in due time. It’s also been 34 years since the Academy honored a director for a horror/thriller.
SHOULDA BEEN NOMINATED: Director Zach Cregger’s thriller, Weapons, builds tension like Hitchcock and the film resonated with audiences.
Haven’t been really updating the project as I should have, there’s gonna be some stuff coming in the future, a little something to try to trick myself into some sort of accountability.
Our Writer and Sound Designer Jon just won an award for Best Direction of an Indie Short Film (together with co-director Kat Carson) for their silent horror short film I Give to Thee.
Join us in giving them both some props.

Jon has asked we add that his first love is and will always be Audio Drama.

I have been trying to work on this film idea while at work…where I got an award!

Faith. Fate. Forgiveness. While not a perfect description, I couldn’t resist the alliteration. And it really isn’t very far off from director and co-writer Jafar Panahi’s (This is Not a Film) latest opus.
From a political statement point of view, this is a must see film. Panahi and his efforts should be supported. He has been jailed, banned, and shunned due to his ideas and films about freedom. In this case it’s for spotlighting the aftermath of torture and religious rule.
The film is quiet but gripping, and the less you know the better. I will say I think the ending transition was fumbled a little. It ended perfectly and very nearly what I anticipated (all in a good way), however the wind up of the climax and the jump cut to get to the coda, despite the build up and very real human responses, felt clunky and forced. To be fair, I believe it was shot guerilla-style with no chance for more than one take, so it was a gamble and you just have to accept it. And despite that assessment, the final result is still very effective and affecting.
Where to watch
