conclusion: if nyou are engaging in 1v1s that nyou expect to last only 8ish seconds, nyou can effectively treat hunter’s aura or pointblank as a choice between 30% melee resist* or 28% fire rate slow**

**and resist shred/firerate down that can impact teammates)

To go back to my theory on Deadlock being a huge con the Patrons are running on everyone, the idea I have is that the specific section of the city that they’ve cordoned off, the Maelstrom, is like a pocket space similar to the Baroness hotel. Within it they can govern and exert there will, and it’s possible to simply leave. That’s why everyone has various lines about not participating when you deselect them, they are, for one reason or another, not participating in the Ritual this time, but the Patrons have plenty of people to lure in.

Within the Maelstrom itself, it just takes a few tweaks, a couple whispers to get everyone to think this is the one. THIS is the Ritual that’ll get their wish, this one is the real deal. They erase and alter memories to fine tune things, make the “heroes” remember previous attempts and alliances, or not. Fine tuning every variable to see all the myriad outcomes.

As for why, who can say. Maybe the Archmother and Hidden King are using the Ritual to generate power for some unknown end, maybe it’s just a game and they’re placing bets. My favorite idea though is they have some incredibly trivial, petty squabble, something even mortals would find pointless to argue about, and this is their method of conflict resolution. Trapping a few dozen people in a time loop torment nexus, warping their minds and manipulating their memories to simulate every conceivable match up, all to find out who’d win in a fight, like AM and SkyNet bickering over powerscaling.
