It’s been a while since I’ve done art, and although this turned out kinda rusty, I’m glad I finally managed to draw something again after so long.
Anyway, I drew Choppy because Kawaii Monster Land is gonna be opening in a couple more days and, frankly, even before the announcement of KML I kinda always wanted to draw Choppy since I’d first heard of the original Kawaii Monster Café. He’s cute and fluffy and purple and kinda reminds me of a Muppet. :3
I did this animation thingy a little while ago (I don’t think it actually counts as an animation, but I don’t know what to call it. An animatic? A wiggle?). Whatever it is, I forgot to post it here. The song playing in the video is Coffee from Jack Stauber’s Micropop. I made two OCs just for it. I plan on drawing them in the future.
In case you can’t tell, I used FlipaClip. It works better than I thought it would.

Now, when I went into this, from what I had read and seen from rankings, I was under the impression this series was quite detested, boring and just Futari Wa series 3 (I will give some ground to that last one though) However, on here anyway, Splash Star does seem to be received quite well, not as well as some of the others but positively and to those who hate on it, I question if they’ve watched the show at all? At least the whole thing before making some of these claims!?
(ᵕ—ᴗ—) Let’s get the obvious out the way first; yes, visually, this shares a lot in common with its predecessor, it shares a lot of tropes with its predecessor and yes, this does hurt it some what because it feels like it is just trying to be a copy cat over its own thing.
Secondly, there is no denying that Splash Star tried to play it too safe, so much so that it perhaps did more harm than good in some areas; after all at no point did it feel like Saki and Mai were ever going to get to a point where feelings/frustrations boil over and they’d part ways for a bit. The pair were solid friends through out, even during the initial loss of Michiru and Kaoru.
On the other hand though, if you ignore that surface layer and actually delve into the series, you will be rewarded with a really good show. The villains, the settings, the plot itself, the fights all very different and all very good. So much so, that there is enough unique things going on in Splash Star that makes it, its own thing!
Heck, Akudaikaan and Gohyaan… while over all, the purpose not clear, still made for a good twist end boss. While the whole final arc, trying to save Kaoru and Michiru and refacing the old generals but buffed up, so the pair could live their own lives with out being hunted down as traitors; brilliant! Really unique, especially Kaoru and Michiru’s character growth is still ongoing during all of this ruckus.
Credit to Princess Filia to as an all power overseer of events, that is constructively useful, used well and is a good support, with out taking anything away from the Precure. So far, she’s the best out of this category, I hope other Precure series have more like her but currently it doesn’t seem to be the case.

˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗Saki Hyuuga/ Cure Bloom/ Cure Bright
Bloom has grown on me a little but poor Saki, she really got a short straw on poor Cure designs.
Yes, she is very Nagisa coded but she is also her own thing and quite different. Saki isn’t so much hot headed but rash, she boils over easily in a fight and when she does it can be fun to watch the beatdowns she offers. Her fight with Ms Shitataare will be one of her peak moments!
Saki is just a walking ball of positivity and a good example of about how changing the perspective on things can make things seem better or worse. She’s a good motivator who shares the early signs of the pink energetic lead but grounded enough with everything else, the softball team, helping out at the bakery, her younger sister, that she has enough other things going on that she isn’t overdosing on sugar like a lot do now a days.
Mai Mishou/ Cure Egret/ Cure Windy
I do enjoy how these two are polar opposites in every regard, it was actually a nice touch and offered contrast. Saki is older and has a younger sister, Mai is the younger sister with an older brother, Saki’s parents are always about, even though they are busy, meanwhile Mai has likely been raised by her brother as their parents success, meant they were rarely about, so family time is precious. The list could easily go on!
I liked Mai, she was relatable in many ways, her personality was fine, she was the rock for Saki when she burned out and the better designed Cure forms of the pair. However, that’s the problem Egret especially has nothing of note to her name, she just supported Bloom and fought along side her, no big moment against a villain on her own.
Mai had a few little character arcs but they all revolved around her drawing hobby or her brother and that didn’t really help flesh her out as a character.
I won’t deny, this would have been a nice conclusion, they look good as a team and having Michiru and Kaoru go from warriors of darkness to warriors of light and face off against their creator for their new home, heck their very lives themselves. It was the missing touch from what was other wise a good closing arc.

🌟Flappy
(≧ヮ≦) 💕 Let’s be honest, I have not been subtle about this one in the slightest. Flappy is amazing! He’s everything Mepple should have been but completely improved. The ep where he falls ill and then Saki falls ill from overworking herself by trying help him, on top of everything else and then Flappy stays up all night trying to help Saki, up to the point where he curls up and falls asleep next to her, just sold me on the little guy!
He’s feisty, determined, caring, protective, helps where he can and while his crush on Choppy is obvious, it isn’t his single character trait or something that felt like it came up every five minutes. so that it got annoying, nor does he spend all his screen time trying to get a rise out of his partner, even though he does tease Saki from time to time.
Choppy
Much like Egret, the quieter one of the two, kind of got forgotten about and its a shame because they hinted that Choppy at least had been here before but nothing every came of it, aside from that single mention. Quiet, soft spoken, completely oblivious and kind, nothing exactly makes Choppy stand out; her design is quite cute but I still don’t know how she translates to skies though?
Moop & Fuup
Now, while I’d usually do them separate, these two had no real distinct personalities of their own and were just a pair. For a while, these two were just two tag alongs that offered a power up as a way of thanks but much later, the pair started to get personalities of their own to. The morning tv, drama stirring pair that they became but their mix ups and confusion caused from it was a funny watch.

These last two have forced an entirely new section to be added due to their extras/supporting cast being that darn good!
In this case, you had Princess Filia, Kenta and Miyasako to name a few but the real stand outs on this occasion.
🌟Korone
Completely unsuspecting but a constant in the background of Saki’s family and the bakery, up to the highlight which was his tag team with Princess Filia! This cat was a freaking amazing highlight, especially with the short time he was allowed to speak.

Michiru & Kaoru Kiryuu
An honouree mention to these two. Let’s not beat around the bush though, these two are very clearly Futari Wa’s, Kiriya’s story if it was allowed to be completed. It is what his story should have been.
However, their journey from emotionless, empty puppets of Akudaikaan, to individuals of their own who grow to love the Land of Greenery and life itself as they warm up to the concept of becoming friend with Saki and Mai, to having a significant role in the final conflict! It was all well done.

I shall admit, she has grown on me, at first I thought she would be annoying, the way she carried herself to that high pitched laugh, everything pointed in that direction but what a joy she turned out to be!
Her beef with Saki, who couldn’t get her name right, to her actual battle prowess, Shitataare dressed classy but could fight dirty; her battles were a joy to watch.

The Splash Star villain roster is pretty well stacked with memorable, well design bad guys and even while most have their nit-picks, one has to stand out over the rest but they are all pretty good on the whole, perhaps one of the best selections so far.
The second to last general and egads, was he a boring one. I liked the initial idea, he was honourable, he was friendly and offered advice to be better but his gimmick just got so stale, so fast, the over the top fitness regime that took unnecessarily large amounts of time…Mr Motivator in that regard he was not.(❤︎ Ironic really… It was out of the blue and last minute but I am very much in support of this pairing! How unfortunate we wouldn’t have a chance to see it get fleshed out into anything more and to top it all, they’re bad guys, I would have never seen this coming! ❤︎)

✨Attack - Bloom and Egret - Spiritual Power
I’m going to answer this one a bit differently because attack wise it is really only the two finishers and while one is more humble than the other, the only difference between the two is the shape at the end; one is a heart the other a star.
However, I’m going to give it to their default abilities by simply calling on the spirits to help and darn, do I love this little gimmick! It has so many little creative ways it can be used, which makes them more versatile and able to fight in more environments but it also isn’t over powered or broken because even this has limits, whether its the girls themselves of the spirits they get their power from.
