“first aid kit”

I’m compiling a list of things I do to help myself when I’m sad or depressed. Please note, I’m coming from the perspective of having clinically diagnosed PTSD, so this isn’t some cutesy little self help list, as I know what it’s like to be at rock bottom, nearly unable to drag myself up or move forward.

  • take a nap if I’ve gotten 7 or less hours a night for one or more nights
  • get rid of things, sell something, give something away to someone who needs it, recycle stuff, donate to a local shelter, ask your neighbors if they need anything you want to let go.
  • clean something - I often do this when I can’t face more mentally taxing things like writing or communicating with people. It feels so good to just clean one thing…or my entire bathroom…whatever I can actually do.
  • find or make something to look forward to - this can be as basic as scheduling a fun phone call with a friend or saying “I’m going to the library tomorrow to walk around a quiet space” - I often create a “trail of breadcrumbs” for myself in case I don’t have anything to keep me going.
  • watch an uplifting movie - I just watched The Wild Robot yesterday and it was a wonderful mood boost for me. The most important thing is to watch something that is just pure fun. As much as I adore mysteries, they are not always cheerful and I forget to watch something that is less sad, something that makes me burst out laughing.
  • learn something new - sometimes I pick subjects at random, sometimes I watch a new documentary, go down a wikipedia rabbit-hole, or if possible, go to a museum or other place to just disconnect from where you are and get in a different head space.
  • clear off a work surface and just try to do one thing at a time - lately this has really helped me clear my head and stop multitasking. Remember that multitasking is a myth. Multitasking is just flipping back and forth between multiple things and not doing many things at once. It hurts your brain.
  • reduce phone time - I’ve recently slipped back into being on my phone way too much and I’m sure it hasn’t been good for my mental health at all. I’ve deleted some apps today and I’m going to try to dramatically reduce phone time from now on.
  • make your life less complicated by deleting apps, getting rid of a monthly service you don’t use anymore, unsubscribe from emails, etc.
  • do something crafty - it can be as simple as coloring in a coloring book, or it can be a more involved crafting project like jewelry-making. I’ve been beading a lot and while I’ve abandoned some of my writing for it, it’s good for me to work with my hands and to refocus.
  • create a sensory station or drawer where you can put things to just play with. For example, I have some kinetic sand which you can get for very cheap. I also have some sensory toys that I got either cheap or free. It forces me to get away from digital devices and retrain myself to be more comfortable with not thinking so hard.
  • sit somewhere and just vibe - a sunny spot in your house, a library, a conservatory in your city, a zoo, whatever. Allowing myself to sit peacefully and not be “productive” is hard for me but it feels good the more I work on this.

I’m aware that not all of my “techniques” are something everyone can do physically or mentally, or even financially. We all have different parameters of existence. Reblog and add things to this running list if you’d like.

Caring Story with Daughter and Father [Weekend Wander Video]

Here’s a story that illustrates an act of caring in the analog world. It shows how small, nonverbal acts of caring have ripple effects within social contexts. This one takes place at a Starbucks in Andersonville, on Chicago’s North Side. I also riff on gratitude, nonverbal communication and primate connections.

Content vs. Caring [Weekend Wander Video]

Content is some form of impersonal communication that is pushed at us to further the agenda of the “content creator,” while caring involves listening and considering a person or group individually—and responding.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The Corporate Care Illusion.

After more than 20 years in leadership roles, and even in my current industry, I’ve heard the same sentence repeated across industries, cultures, meetings, and mission statements.

At the close of this thought, I will also share my thoughts on a specific team I worked on during my years in the cable industry, as well as on one interview that panned out very well. I will also include a…
