Is that all for you?” She points to two teenage boys around Luke’s age that are by some palettes a few feet away, offloading them. “I can grab one of the boys to help put your things in the car, or would you rather have your grandson here do it?”
His dad freezes in the middle of taking his wallet out and Luke’s halfway through impatiently rocking back onto his heels. He nearly forgets to plant his feet solidly on the ground and almost falls backward before he catches himself. He blinks a few times at her, glances at his dad, and then sucks in a shaky breath.
“Yeah, nah,” he says, and his throat feels too tight. His voice too high. Wrong, scratchy, pained. She might notice. And then she’ll wonder what she said. Because isn’t it obvious that’s what they were to each other? “I got it. I can handle it, thanks.”
