“Mousetails”

Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) cones are easy to identify – just look for the mousetails! The “mousetails”, which look to some like the hindquarters of a mouse jumping into the cone, are forked bracts. Bracts are modified scales. In most conifer species, the bract and scale are fused and indistinguishable.” — mountrainiernps

This is a famous sculpture called “Dropped Cone."

It’s a huge piece of art that looks like a giant vanilla ice cream cone fell from the sky and landed upside down on the corner of a building.

Here are some fun facts about it:

• Where is it? It sits on top of the Neumarkt Galerie shopping mall in Cologne, Germany.

• Who made it? It was created by two artists named Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.

They were famous for making giant sculptures of everyday objects.

• How big is it? It is about 39 feet tall (12 meters) and weighs over 3 tons!

• What is it made of? Even though it looks like melting ice cream, it’s actually made of strong materials like steel and plastic.

The artists chose this spot because the square below is very busy, and they wanted to add something playful and surprising to the city’s skyline

The cost of mugolio is not found in ingredients, but is paid in time. How much time is certainly up for debate, and you’ll notice my recipe turns around a lot quicker than burying a jar of pine cones and sugar in the yard and digging it up the next year (an actual recipe from Romania). You’ll want to wait at least a month for a good pine syrup, although aging it longer can be fun.

I did this with larch cones a few years ago, and the aged syrup really impressed me. Revisiting the recipe this year using immature fir cones.

Gymnosperms [“Naked Seeded” Plants]

“Botanically, the conifers are classed as Gymnosperms, or “naked seeded” plants, because their ovules, which later become seeds, are borne exposed on the scales of the immature cones or female flowers. These ovules are fertilised, as with other plants, by pollen carried from male flowers. As the cones develop, their scales become tightly shut to protect the seeds within. But when once they are ripe the cone-scales open in dry weather, and then the winged seeds drift away. Most conifers flower in spring; their cones may ripen during the following autumn, the following spring, or in some species eighteen months after pollination.

If the seeds alight on suitable ground, and are not eaten up by squirrels, mice, birds, or insects, they germinate and produce a little whorl of seed-leaves, only two or three for some species but numerous in others. These are followed by an upright shoot that bears solitary needles, forming what is called “juvenile” foliage. Such solitary needles are found at the tops or tips of most sorts of conifers, and as they all look much alike they give little help towards identification. But the shoots formed in the seedling’s second year, and on side or secondary branches in the foliage generally, have an “adult” pattern of leaves.”

Sunday Notes: David Cone Tackles a Challenging Career Quiz

Last summer, an article titled Mark Gubicza Tackles a Challenging Career Quiz ran here at FanGraphs. In it, the Los Angeles Angels broadcaster did his best to answer matchup-specific questions from his playing days —- he pitched in the big leagues from 1984-1996 — such as which batter he allowed the most hits to, and who took him deep the most times. Along with taking a stab at the answers,…
