What Does Your Music Career Really Need Right Now? (And How to Get It)

okay but like… can we talk about how the music industry has everyone thinking success is just about “making it” when really it’s about strategy???

because here’s the thing - talent is great and all, but if you don’t have a plan, you’re basically throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping something sticks

*and that’s not a vibe*

so we wrote this whole thing breaking down what actually matters:

- strategic thinking (revolutionary, i know)

- data-driven decisions (yes, even for creatives)

- understanding YOUR unique path (not copying what worked for someone else)

plus all the good stuff about streaming, brand development, and building real connections with people who actually care about your music

anyway if you’re tired of feeling lost in the music industry maze, we got you ↓

Artist Development and their teams

I truly believe at this point the people on these artists team hate them and wanna see them fail. Especially if they are foreign and want to enter the American market. Case in point Tyla…like we get that you’re coloured in SA but baaaabby that shit don’t fly in the US because coloured is a derogatory term.

When Latto first came out she was known as Miss Mulatto and people were like naw that ain’t gonna work. And guess what she changed her name and voila magic.

She came here said I am colored. People were like naw. A GOOD PR team or hell team member would have said hey explain the term to the audience by saying this, “In SA I am colored but here I would be considered multicultural or multiracial.” Boom problem solved.

But Imma tell ya that Breakfast Club interview hurt BAD. Even if she didn’t wanna answer the question she could have easily pivoted instead of looking around and letting a person in the background answer.

She needs media training bad. The Breakfast Club is known for being controversial and her US team should have thoroughly prepared her for that. It really gave this is beneath me.

I’ve even seen people say oh well Nicki Minaj isn’t humble or Cardi B isn’t humble BUT they have a couple of things to their advantage. One they’re rap girlies. They are expected to pop their shit. Two they are from NYC. Nicki is Trinidadian and Cardi is Dominican American. They know a little better how to navigate the race/ethnicity conversation without coming off as offensive.

All in all I can say the artist NEED better teams. The teams are sabotaging the artists before they even have a chance to truly be successful.

Grassroots Music Making needs support. Are you in a position to help?

Grassroots music making is the source of our music culture and sense of place. But it’s under threat from rising costs, venue closures, loss of accessible spaces, reduced income streams, changing audience habits, political decisions, and lack of funding and support. Please support our CrowdFund on Go Fund Me.
The cost of touring may have gone up 30-40% in recent times, but Musicians wages have…

Saweetie had the opportunity to be one of one but…

Okay so hear me out I think Saweetie really had the chance to carve out her own lane and differentiate herself amongst her peers and make some real waves in music but she pivoted to a gimmicky brand that seems inauthentic on her.

I think if she had stuck with the “classy” version of I am a paid bad bitch she would have solidified her spot. Cause let’s be honest nobody was rapping this way when she came out. It would have made performing live a little easier for her and improved her performances. We wouldn’t expect ass shaking and rapping.

In my opinion this should have been her core brand. Appeal to the audience who like to scream ay ay ay at Sunday brunch with bottomless mimosas, David Yurman bracelets and the perfect lippie.

I mean shit use that pretty privilege to your advantage.

This seems like a costume.

Like it just feels inauthentic. Like a kid who is wearing clothes and shoes that are too big.

But Idk I’m not on her artist team so 🤷🏾‍♀️

Anyhow just needed to get that out of my brain 🧠

ohhh, so it’s a pretty long story lol, first of all, thank you very much for your interest!!

actually I/ve been drawing for my whole life as long as I remember myself :D but I became a digital artist about 7 years ago and as I didn’t used to draw on a computer really, my arts looked somewhat like that (just now that I’m feeling super shy at the moment lol)

this is 2018:

a little later I got my very first job as a 2D artist but as a freelancer and I also started attending some courses, lectures and practice and some time later it turned already into smth like that:

(this is 2019-2020 i think)

(I’m extra shy at this moment already lol)

also, my nickname as the artist used to change from time to time until I got to the current one but nevermind

after that I got my very first “real” job as a 2D artist at a gamedev company and I started working on some real games hehe

that was the point when my art development got waaay quicker and I started drawing something like this as I worked with some more experienced artists

(this is 2021)

for the past couple of years and till 2025 I guess I used to draw a lot of fanarts, got into anime since the Covid started and drew lots of different game characters, props and other stuff like this:

(these are arts from 2023-2024)

but I also used to burn out a lot and drew rarely because of that and closer to the end of 2024 I started experimenting with renders a lot and finally realized the artsyle I really enjoy a lot, which bring me joy while drawing

(I knew it waay earlier but somehow I felt that if your art is not “fulle rendered” it’s not cool, you know, and I stopped myself from drawing in a more comic-like line art style that I loved)

but finally I decided that art is all about comfort and enjoyment and since winter I guess I found the artsrtyle that I love and can develop and aalso I’ve got the craziest hyperfixation on Baldur’s Gate 3 (and all the dnd related stuff unexpectedly) and now I draw stuff like this really a lot and also started learning more about comic panels, storyboards and so on to turn my illustrations into the short stories as well:

(this is 2025 already)

well, it got waay longer than I expected lol

not sure if you gonna read all of that really, but at least there are lots of pictures to represent my artstyle development in general haha

Top Challenges in International Music Management and How to Overcome Them

Managing music careers on a global scale presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. For seasoned executives like Faryal Khan Thompson, who boasts over 15 years of experience in international expansion, creative/marketing agencies, music distribution, and independent artist management, navigating these complexities is part of daily life. However, for many, the intricacies of international music management can be daunting. This article explores the top challenges in international music management and offers strategies to overcome them.

1. Cultural Differences and Market Nuances

Challenge: Understanding and respecting cultural differences is crucial in international music management. Each market has its own musical tastes, traditions, and business practices.

Solution: Research and cultural immersion are key. Managers should invest time in learning about the cultural nuances of each market. Collaborating with local experts and hiring regional teams can also provide valuable insights and help navigate cultural complexities effectively.

2. Legal and Regulatory Compliance

Challenge: The music industry is heavily regulated, and laws vary significantly across countries. Intellectual property rights, copyright laws, and performance rights differ from one region to another.

Solution: Employing legal experts who specialize in international entertainment law is essential. Staying updated on local regulations and building relationships with local legal authorities can prevent legal pitfalls. Utilizing international music rights organizations can also aid in managing rights and royalties efficiently.

3. Language Barriers

Challenge: Language differences can hinder communication and marketing efforts. Misunderstandings can arise, affecting negotiations, contracts, and promotional activities.

Solution: Hiring multilingual staff or professional translators can bridge language gaps. Additionally, creating multilingual marketing materials and using translation technology can enhance communication and ensure messages are accurately conveyed.

4. Diverse Market Dynamics

Challenge: Markets around the world have different economic conditions, consumer behaviors, and technological infrastructures. What works in one country may not necessarily succeed in another.

Solution: Conducting thorough market research to understand the economic and technological landscape of each target market is crucial. Tailoring marketing strategies to fit local conditions and leveraging data analytics to monitor performance can optimize market entry and growth.

5. Logistics and Touring

Challenge: Coordinating international tours involves complex logistics, including travel arrangements, visa requirements, and local regulations. Ensuring the safety and comfort of artists and crew is paramount.

Solution: Partnering with experienced tour managers and logistics companies can streamline the process. Using technology for project management and scheduling can enhance efficiency. Building strong relationships with local promoters and venues can also facilitate smoother tour planning and execution.

6. Financial Management

Challenge: Managing finances across multiple countries involves dealing with different currencies, tax laws, and banking systems. Fluctuating exchange rates can impact revenue and budgeting.

Solution: Working with international finance professionals who understand the intricacies of global financial management is essential. Using financial software that supports multi-currency transactions and staying informed about currency exchange trends can aid in effective financial planning and risk management.

7. Building a Global Brand

Challenge: Establishing and maintaining a consistent brand image across diverse markets while resonating with local audiences is challenging.

Solution: Developing a strong, adaptable brand strategy is vital. Employing local marketing teams who understand regional preferences can help tailor brand messages. Leveraging social media and digital marketing tools can also amplify brand presence and engagement on a global scale.

8. Networking and Relationships

Challenge: Building and maintaining a robust network of industry contacts in various countries is time-consuming but essential for success.

Solution: Attending international music conferences, festivals, and industry events can facilitate networking. Joining global music associations and leveraging online platforms for professional networking can also expand an international contact base.

Overcoming Challenges: Faryal Khan Thompson’s Approach

Faryal Khan Thompson, with her extensive experience and diverse professional background, exemplifies how to navigate the complexities of international music management. Her approach includes:
