Something really funny to me about Angel is when he got souled, he was still trying to make things work with Darla using relationship compromises the reddit gaycation guy would’ve suggested.
Pussy so bad it gives you a moment of “perfect despair” that snaps you out of your ‘morally grey brooding asshole’ era and makes you want to have friends again
We close out the episode back at the palace, where Cordy and Groo are writing proclamations together. And just- fuck, the way that Cordy’s voice drops on ‘we didn’t order anything’, like she knows something is up, and then the priests ordering Groo - their great hero and champion, let us not forget - out with a simple 'get out, cow’ and he just takes it- it really underlines how absolute the priests’ control is and how conditioned to obey Groo is. I love that Cordy tries to stick up for him here, which- the priests’ insistence that he is that only because they say he is is just- no? Groo is 'the brave and undefeated’ because he is brave and has never been defeated. If they took the title away, he would still be those things, it’s just a matter of whether that would be acknowledged. And if I were Cordy, I’d be starting to consider the fragility of my own title here, but she seems very confident in her ability to change things despite the fact that her actual power in this situation is- very debatable, to put it mildly, and the priests slap down her attempts to assert authority hard. For them, the prophecy and its players are just tools, and the Covenant will use them as they like.
Which- okay, I get that everyone being daft this episode has been to set that up, but- this has sort of been very obvious the whole time? Like- they tortured Cordy before putting her in this position. One does not give one’s recent torture victim any authority that might allow them to get their own back. I get the parallel with her finally getting an acting gig only to be at the mercy of misogynistic directors, but- again, both times, it feels kind of weird and out of keeping with Cordy’s character development.
And then, just to rub it in, he reveals what he’s brought- and it’s Lorne’s severed head in a dish. Which- when I first watched this, I genuinely thought he was for-real, permanently dead. He’d been a recurring character all season, but not one of the main cast, and I thought his greater focus here had been just before he died, which- can I just say, as terrible as Lorne’s ending is, I am so glad he didn’t die here, trapped in the world he always wanted to leave.
Anyway, that wraps us up. Tomorrow, I’m going to be covering Smallville’s 'Obsession’, and then it’s the respective finales of Buffy S5 and Angel S2 at some point during the week depending on my workload. Until then, take care of yourselves, and I will be back soon.
Meanwhile, Fred is still looking after a rather battered Angel, who- yeah, he’s sort of slumped in a messy state of almost childlike trauma in reaction to what just happened with his demon half. I wonder what that felt like to him - was it like having to watch, helpless, as something controlled his body? I doubt it. Is it his own inability to control his instincts? Except that he did not seem especially uncontrolled-
Oh, it’s about his friends seeing his demonic face. Which- okay, that makes a degree of sense. Angel has a certain amount of shame even over his normal vampface, and being a full-on monster is even more disturbing, but- come on, mate, they’ve seen worse. I’d worry more about the having attacked them in that state, particularly as Wes and Gunn- weren’t around for Angelus and thus still haven’t seen the worst of what Angel is. I mean- I do still feel he’s being a bit melodramatic, because nothing that’s happened was quite as bad as what Angel’s been doing this past season, but I get the initial emotional response even if I do think he’s being a bit of a drama queen about it. I just- I do feel like Angel ought to be in a slightly different place to this after the season the gang have had. Like- you full-on abandoned a roomful of lawyers to die. I feel like if your friends were so little attached to you that they would fuss about a little thing like looking demony, that would still be the bigger hurdle here.
Like- again, I hate to keep banging on this, but if the gang were all a bit out of their senses for some reason, this would make sense as a deep-down emotional response that Angel cannot, in that state, think past, but as he’s supposed to be in his right mind here, it does just feel a bit off.
Fred offers to let Angel stay with her and- yup, they are definitely setting up her hero-worship thing about Angel, which- is going to be a plot point for a little while, though she does get over it relatively quickly.
The rebels also want to send a message to the Princess by- storming the castle. Which- is definitely a message, but- maybe not one you want to send. And Wes, unfortunately, makes things even worse by bringing up that they’re friends with the princess despite all Gunn’s best efforts to shut him up. He’s not believed at first, but is after they find a picture of the three of them together in Wes’s wallet, which- apparently everyone recognises the princess on sight? Which seems weird, as there hasn’t even been time to strike new coins with her face on them yet.
Also, apparently there are ‘reconnaissance cows’ who work for the authorities? Which- okay, that makes a degree of sense, you will always find people willing to sell out their own for minor privileges, but it does make me wonder how things in Pylea usually run day-to-day, what the human population is, how many were born in Pylea vs abducted from earth and so on and so forth.
Unfortunately, however, the rebels are under the impression that heads on spikes are better than hostages for getting what they want, which- uh- is certainly a view.

ALTANGEL: Jesus, they garnished you? (unties Nina’s gag)
NINA: No, get away! Just let them choke on me.
ANGEL: (unshackles Nina by hitting the cuffs with a metal urn) Listen to me. Tomorrow you’re gonna be home.
NINA: This is what I am. I can’t go back there, ever. This is better.
ANGEL: Nothing better about ending up in a doggy bag.

ALTlovely buffyverse people, what episode of ATS you’ll recommend to get into it? I’m not good at starting shows from pilots. which one is your comfort episode/the most beautifully insane one/the one that hooked you personally?
Prof. Walsh: Next class we’ll be moving on to personality types and disorders. For those of you who have done the reading you already know (sees Buffy’s hand up) yes?
Buffy: She read the reading.
Prof. Walsh: well, she’ll have some time on her hands. As I was saying. We won’t be able to cover it all in the class but that doesn’t mean it isn’t work knowing and it doesn’t mean it won’t be on the mid-term. Now, if I’ve been unclear in any way. Speak now.

ALTi still cant believe that the guy who played holtz in angel the series ALSO was the voice of joshua graham from fallout new vegas
Angel season 1 episode 14 dared to say that the real monsters are middle class white boys
aria rant:
i hate how the parallel between cordelia and dru is never talked about! they both are doe-eyed brunettes, who are very religious in sense (powers and cristianity) they have visions that stop them from having a normal live and they both have a very tragic end! and this is all without mentioning angel to the mix
