I was talking with a coworker today about how I frequently find myself surrounded by people who practice ATRs, at a rate that is alarming compared to other coworkers. And I work in a hospital so it’s never surprising when people turn to spirituality for healing, but it is odd that I get all the nuns and ATR practioners. I see the signs in their room with the objects on their bedside tables, the saint images, their jewelry, headscarves with spiritual symbols, ect.
My coworker brought up a really good point when I mentioned how frustrated I get when people judge these patients for refusing certain aspects of our care. He suggested that maybe these people are finding themselves in my path so I can be an advocate. Because while I don’t practice an ATR I am educated enough to understand why some of these people make the choices they do against medical advice.
He’s given me some food for thought, and something to consider more deeply
