This film is based on a stage play inspired by real wartime experiences. Set in Okinawa during the final stage of World War II, it follows two Japanese soldiers who climb a tree to escape a fierce ground battle and end up living there for two years without realizing the war has already ended. The story unfolds mostly through their conversations and the gradual changes in their state of mind, effectively highlighting the absurdity of war. At the same time, because the film stays almost entirely in the same place with the same characters, I personally felt the narrative was a little limited in its development.
